14 LC 104 0153 Senate Resolution 925 By: Senators Mullis of the 53rd, Chance of the 16th, Miller of the 49th, Beach of the 21st, Davis of the 22nd and others A RESOLUTION 1 Commending Greg Maddux and recognizing him for his induction into the Baseball Hall of 2 Fame; and for other purposes. 3 WHEREAS, Greg Maddux is known to baseball fans in Atlanta and throughout the world 4 as a pitcher with extraordinary skill and power and a superior ability to outthink his 5 opponents and anticipate results; and 6 WHEREAS, a second round pick in the 1984 major league baseball draft, he made his major 7 league debut in September, 1986, making him, at the age of 20, the youngest player in the 8 majors; and 9 WHEREAS, for 17 straight seasons, Maddux recorded 15 or more wins, the longest such 10 streak in major league baseball history; and 11 WHEREAS, many of his achievements include being an eight-time All-Star, a recipient of 12 18 Gold Glove awards and four Cy Young awards, and a member of the 1995 World Series 13 Champion Atlanta Braves; and 14 WHEREAS, Maddux, along with Tom Glavine and John Smoltz, pitched for over a decade 15 as the core of one of the best pitching staffs in the history of the game; and 16 WHEREAS, due to his outstanding career in baseball, Greg Maddux has been elected to the 17 Baseball Hall of Fame and will be inducted on July 27, 2014; and 18 WHEREAS, it is only fitting that Greg Maddux be commended for his fantastic 19 accomplishments. We have just witnessed the conclusion of perhaps the greatest baseball season in the history of the game. Not one, but two men broke the "unbreakable" record of sixty-one home-runs set by New York Yankee great Roger Maris in 1961;2 four men hit over fifty home-runs, a number that had only been surpassed fifteen times in the past fifty-six years,3 while thirty-three players hit over thirty home runs;4 Barry Bonds became the only player to record 400 home-runs and 400 stolen bases in a career;5 and Alex Rodriguez, a twenty-three-year-old shortstop, joined Bonds and Jose Canseco as one of only three men to have recorded forty home-runs and forty stolen bases in a 6 single season. This was not only an offensive explosion either. Platform , Vol. 3, No. 1 Mascots: Performance and Fetishism in Sport Culture Mary C. Daily (Boston College) Sport culture is something of great interest to citizens ranging from sociology scholars 1 to sports fans. The performance rituals that accompany sport include victory dances, school songs, cheers, and mascots. As Rick Minter, a mascot historian writes, “We all care about the symbols, nicknames, and legends of our club – mascots make them real again. They are a bit of our club that we can reach out and touch” (7). If we accept Minter’s conceptualization, what is the theoretical foundation that supports these representations? They make us laugh, we enjoy their athleticism, and kids love them; however, their lineage and purpose runs far deeper than their presence in the arena. This paper argues that mascot performances represent fetishized aspects of sport culture, and specifically, that such rituals embody the ability to relate to and influence the providence of a chosen athletic team. Arguably, the success of college and professional sport teams rests on their ability to claim triumph, and mascot performances are an integral part of that process to those who believe in their power. While sports fans enjoy mascots for their physicality as furry caricatures that dance along the sidelines, their significance is founded on a supernatural power relationship. The performance of mascots perpetuates their fetishized status in sports ranging from high school soccer to professional football. Sponsorship of the game was obtained from Crown Central Petroleum Company. A spokesman for Crown at the time, Brooks Robinson, the Hall of Fame third baseman for the Orioles, became honorary chairman of the game. The first annual Crown High School All-Star game was played in 1982 at Memorial Stadium between teams of high school seniors representing the North and the South. Growing in stature every year, the venue for the game shifted to Oriole Park at Camden Yards when it opened in 1992. In 2004, when the game lost the sponsorship of Crown, Brooks Robinson, as he had done so many times for the Orioles with a sparkling defensive play at third, saved the game. He sought out Joe Geier, a longtime friend, baseball fan, and Mount St. Joseph graduate, and the Geier Financial Group agreed to sponsor the game. Fittingly, the game was renamed the Brooks Robinson Senior High School All-Star Game. The game is usually played on a Sunday after an Orioles’ game following the conclusion of State tournament play in late May.
