There may be typos or small discrepancies from the podcast audio. LILLIAN CUNNINGHAM: Nearly a year ago, I started a journey back in time through the American presidency. I left the newsroom and drove down along the dark Potomac River to Mount Vernon, George Washington's home, on a cold winter night. There were crackling fires and reanactors. What I didn't mention back in that very first episode, though, was that there was also pop music piped in over the stereo system, making it really hard to record those little fire sounds. This whole project has kind of been that way. Things haven't gone as planned -- tape recorders have broken, Lyndon Johnson experts have fallen sick with laryngitis right before interviews. But even more than those unexpected twists and turns, is that the present has shown up over and over and over in the past. Fast forward 44 weeks to last night -- election night. And suddenly, all I could see was the past poking its way into the present. I watched the results roll in on the newsroom screens until early into the morning. And I thought about all the elections that have come before. George H.W. Bush sitting alone in his hotel room, mourning his loss to Bill Clinton in 1992. Trump biogra- pher Gwenda Blair describes the scene: “Gazing out, they seemed for a moment like a royal couple viewing subjects from the balcony of the palace.”1 Trump fl ashed two thumbs up and took his place on the stage to proclaim his intention to campaign for the Republican nomination for president. Unlike the other politicians hoping to be elected president in No- vember 2016, Trump was a billionaire and international celebrity who had been in the public eye for decades. • Trump's Trade War Timeline: an Up-To-Date Guide
TRADE & INVESTMENT POLICY WATCH BLOG Trump’s Trade War Timeline: An Up-to-Date Guide Chad P. Bown and Melina Kolb, Peterson Institute for International Economics Updated May 17, 2021 This post, originally published on April 19, 2018, will be updated as trade disputes with China and other countries evolve. In 2018, former President Donald Trump started a trade war with the world involving multiple battles with China as well as American allies. Each battle has used a particular US legal rationale, such as calling foreign imports a national security threat, followed by Trump imposing tariffs and/or quotas on imports. Subsequent retaliation by trading partners and the prospect of further escalation risked significantly hampering trade and investment, and possibly the global economy. President Joseph R. Biden Jr. must now determine whether to keep US tariffs and other trade barriers in place or adjust policies in the wake of changing conditions, as well as the COVID-19 pandemic. The timelines below track the development of the most pressing trade conflicts with links to the latest available data and PIIE analysis. According to a new study by the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism and the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life, just 1% of the campaign coverage by major news outlets (including broadcast and cable television, radio, newspaper front pages and the most popular news websites) focused on the religion of the candidates or the role of religion in the presidential election. Only 6% of the election- related stories in major news outlets contained any reference to religion. Media attention to religion’s importance in the campaign peaked during the primaries, when several Republican candidates spoke about their Christian beliefs. The prominence of religious rhetoric in speeches by Rep. Michele Bachmann, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, former U.S.

Corporate and Foreign Interests Behind White House Push to Transfer U.S. Nuclear Technology to Saudi Arabia Prepared for Chairman Elijah E. Cummings Second Interim Staff Report Committee on Oversight and Reform U.S. House of Representatives July 2019 oversight.house.gov EXECUTIVE SUMMARY On February 19, 2019, the Committee on Oversight and Reform issued an interim staff report prepared for Chairman Elijah E. Cummings after multiple whistleblowers came forward to warn about efforts inside the White House to rush the transfer of U.S. nuclear technology to Saudi Arabia. As explained in the first interim staff report, under Section 123 of the Atomic Energy Act, the United States may not transfer nuclear technology to a foreign country without the approval of Congress in order to ensure that the agreement meets nine nonproliferation requirements to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons. These agreements, commonly known as “123 Agreements,” are typically negotiated with career experts at the National Security Council (NSC) and the Departments of State, Defense, and Energy. The “Gold Standard” for 123 Agreements is a commitment by the foreign country not to enrich or re-process nuclear fuel and not to engage in activities linked to the risk of nuclear proliferation. During the Obama Administration, Saudi Arabia refused to agree to the Gold Standard. During the Trump Administration, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) went further, proclaiming: “Without a doubt, if Iran developed a nuclear bomb, we will follow suit as soon as possible.” There is strong bipartisan opposition to abandoning the “Gold Standard” for Saudi Arabia in any future 123 Agreement.

1/2/2020 Trump: Discussing a Biden probe with Barr would be 'appropriate' - POLITICO Vice President Joe Biden's connections to Ukraine have become a subject of deep interest among the president’s political allies. | Ethan Miller/Getty Images 2020 ELECTIONS Trump: Discussing a Biden probe with Barr would be 'appropriate' Rudy Giuliani, the president’s personal attorney, is urging Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden, raising questions about whether Donald Trump would pressure his attorney general to do the same. By ELIANA JOHNSON, DARREN SAMUELSOHN, ANDREW RESTUCCIA and DANIEL LIPPMAN | 05/10/2019 08:01 PM EDT | Updated 05/11/2019 12:32 AM EDT President Donald Trump told POLITICO on Friday that it would be “appropriate” for him to speak to Attorney General Bill Barr about launching an investigation into his potential 2020 rival, Joe Biden, or his son, Hunter. The question of whether Trump could pressure Barr to probe Biden is coming under scrutiny after Rudy Giuliani, the president’s personal attorney, said he would be traveling to Ukraine to urge the incoming government there to look at Hunter Biden’s involvement with a Ukrainian energy company that has reportedly been in prosecutors’ crosshairs. The efforts appear to be part of a broader campaign by Trump’s allies to damage the former Democratic vice president’s White House campaign and have raised questions about whether Trump’s team is trying to enlist a foreign government to aid the president’s re-election bid. https://www.politico.com/story/2019/05/10/trump-biden-ukraine-barr-1317601 1/4 1/2/2020 Trump: Discussing a Biden probe with Barr would be 'appropriate' - POLITICO “Certainly it would be an appropriate thing to speak to him about, but I have not done that as of yet.

Case 1:20-cv-01580-RCL Document 27 Filed 06/20/20 Page 1 of 10 UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT FOR THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA UNITED STATES OF AMERICA v. Case No. 1:20-cv-1580 (RCL) JOHN R. BOLTON, Defendant. MEMORANDUM ORDER Before the Court is the government’s motion for a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction to enjoin defendant John Bolton from publishing his book. Mot., ECF No. 3. The book, a political memoir reflecting on Bolton’s tenure as National Security Advisor, has been printed, bound, and shipped across the country. It is due for national release on Tuesday, June 23, 2020. The government insists that the book contains sensitive information that could compromise national security and alleges that Bolton prematurely halted his prepublication review process in order to proceed to publication. Defendant Bolton characterizes his actions differently—he emphasizes his substantial and extensive compliance with the review process and dismisses the government’s recent objections to his manuscripts as pretextual and politically motivated. While Bolton’s unilateral conduct raises grave national security concerns, the government has not established that an injunction is an appropriate remedy. I. BACKGROUND John Bolton accepted a role as National Security Advisor in April 2018. In this position, Bolton directed and supervised the work of the National Security Council (“NSC”) staff on behalf of the President. He left his post on September 10, 2019. Within two months, Bolton had secured a book deal with publisher Simon & Schuster. 1 Case 1:20-cv-01580-RCL Document 27 Filed 06/20/20 Page 2 of 10 The government anticipates that public officials will seek to publish accounts of their experiences.
