    Peterborough and District Family History Newsletter May 2020 From the Acting Chairman… We are still in our lockdown situation as our second newsletter is sent. May is the month when we normally hold our AGM, an important milestone when several key actions are taken. As soon as we meet again, we shall hold an AGM to formally approve those actions which your committee are assuming. You already know that Gill Cable resigned from the position of Chair due to pressures of work, and that the committee accepted Vice- President Michael Kennelly’s offer of becoming Acting Chair. Our Secretary, Helen Tovey, told us that she would be retiring at the AGM because of house moving (and job pressures). The committee has accepted the offer of Sadie McMullon, our Journal Editor, to take on the office of Secretary as well. During May Helen and Sadie will complete the hand-over. Michael Kennelly will also take over the Programme Organiser’s functions on a temporary basis. On your behalf I express our gratitude to these people for all that they have done and all that they are about to do – and wish them well. I think that we are unlikely to meet formally until October, but will keep you updated. The committee are planning to hold an ‘on-line’ meeting. Now a warning which has no relation to family history. Recently I have received two official looking emails reminding me that I have not paid my TV licence and suggesting that I set up a new Direct Debit payment to do so.

    Manorialization and population growth by landlord types and landscape regions in Medieval England Junichi Kanzaka Soka University, Tokyo Abstract This paper examines the diverse processes of manorialization and population growth by landlord types and landscape regions in thirteenth century England. Factor analysis (maximum likelihood estimation and promax rotation) of the data from the Hundred Rolls identify three factors: classical structure, freedom, and demographic pressure. Manorialization characterized by the first two approximately independent factors differs by landlord type. Highly manorialized parishes were mainly occupied by the earlier-established ecclesiastical estates, while earls’ estates were relatively prominent in parishes where classical structures developed but free tenements were dominant. This study also reveals that many parishes were highly manorialized in the western and eastern champion regions of the Midlands and Chiltern. Furthermore, the factor of demographic pressure revealed other regional differences. While parishes in the western and eastern champion Midlands were manorialized in a similar way, the eastern part faced greater population pressure. However, the pressure in this region was still less than that in the south-eastern champion, and the East Anglian Heights. In the eastern champion Midlands, the size of villein holdings could be maintained, while in the latter two regions, villein plots fragmented and the number of free small tenements increased. 1 1. The Committee approved a long list of potential cycling schemes which ranked this scheme first. 1.2 At its meeting of 7 th July 2008, the same AJC approved a new list of rural cycling schemes across the district. The new list again ranked the Yaxley to Farcet in first position. The same meeting considered and approved the findings of a report examining the three proposed phases of construction and the results of public consultation. This showed overwhelming support for the scheme. 1.3 The first two phases of construction were carried out in 2009. The remaining rural section, between Station Farm, Yaxley and Farcet cemetery, was considered by the AJC at its meeting of 11 th October 2010, and is shown on Plan 1 .
