Jack the Ripper: The Divided Self and the Alien Other in Late-Victorian Culture and Society Michael Plater Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 18 July 2018 Faculty of Arts The University of Melbourne ii ABSTRACT This thesis examines late nineteenth-century public and media representations of the infamous “Jack the Ripper” murders of 1888. Focusing on two of the most popular theories of the day – Jack as exotic “alien” foreigner and Jack as divided British “gentleman” – it contends that these representations drew upon a series of emergent social and cultural anxieties in relation to notions of the “self” and the “other.” Examining the widespread contention that “no Englishman” could have committed the crimes, it explores late-Victorian conceptions of Englishness and documents the way in which the Ripper crimes represented a threat to these dominant notions of British identity and masculinity. In doing so, it argues that late-Victorian fears of the external, foreign “other” ultimately masked deeper anxieties relating to the hidden, unconscious, instinctual self and the “other within.” Moreover, it reveals how these psychological concerns were connected to emergent social anxieties regarding degeneration, atavism and the “beast in man.” As such, it evaluates the wider psychological and sociological impact of the case, arguing that the crimes revealed the deep sense of fracture, duality and instability that lay beneath the surface of late-Victorian English life, undermining and challenging dominant notions of progress, civilisation and social advancement. Situating the Ripper narrative within a broader framework of late-nineteenth century cultural uncertainty and crisis, it therefore argues that the crimes (and, more specifically, populist perceptions of these crimes) represented a key defining moment in British history, serving to condense and consolidate a whole series of late-Victorian fears in relation to selfhood and identity. -

The structure of Lao motifs and patterns are complicated, but weaving processes still use traditional techniques and simple floor-loom. Therefore, it takes a lot of time for making a weave-draft on the loom and percentage of losing weave-drafts is very high. In contrast, industrial textiles use electronic loom and digital weave-drafts to produce fabrics, which are suitable for fast production but lack complicated traditional patterns. As a result, this paper introduces scientific approaches for digitizing motifs, patterns, and weave-drafts of traditional Lao textiles. Mathematical principles of Frieze and Wallpaper groups are investigated for digital design. The paper presents two standard files, image file format and WIF file as digital weave-draft in order to fill the gap between traditional and modern weave techniques. The standard files are understandable and usable for both hand-weavers and weaving machines. Our study shows that a modern electronic TC2 loom is a suitable loom to connect between traditional Lao weave technique and modern weave technique. Jose Burman, a South African member, died in 1995 but was not included at the time. Ginette Harrison was the first woman to climb Kangchenjunga, in 1998. Whilst not yet a member, she had started the application process for membership. She died on Dhaulagiri last year. Yossi Brain, who sent us valuable reports from South America for the Area Notes, died in an avalanche on 25 September 1999 while mountain eering with friends in Northern Bolivia. Yossi touched the lives of a lot of people, through his lively, bright, and often irreverent sense of humourwhich permeated his guiding, his books, his articles and above all his spirit. He achieved a lot in the time he had, making two different and sucessful careers, and providing inspiration to many. Ulf Carlsson was Chairman of the Mountain Club of Kenya between 1993 and 1996. He wrote an article about the Swedish mountains for the 1997 Alpine Journal and was well known to some of our members. He died in the Pamir in 1999. The sample was composed of fifty crewel embroidered items, believed to have been created between 1620 and 1781, within the geographic boundaries of New England. A data sheet, plus color slides or black and white sketches, were used to record information pertaining to each embroidered item. -

Hedin It was Pierre Francastel who christened the most famous the west (Figs. 1, 2, both showing the expanded zone four program of sculpture in the history of Versailles: the Grande years later). We know the northern end of the axis as the Commande of 1674.1 The program consisted of twenty-four Allee d'Eau. The upper half of the zone, which is divided into statues and was planned for the Parterre d'Eau, a square two identical halves, is known to us today as the Parterre du puzzle of basins that lay on the terrace in front of the main Nord (Fig. 2). The axis terminates in a round pool, known in western facade for about ten years. The puzzle itself was the sources as "le rondeau" and sometimes "le grand ron- designed by Andre Le N6tre or Charles Le Brun, or by the deau."2 The wall in back of it takes a series of ninety-degree two artists working together, but the two dozen statues were turns as it travels along, leaving two niches in the middle and designed by Le Brun alone. We size up visitors all the time, anticipating behavior from their age, clothing, and demeanor. What do they think of interpreters, disguised as we are in the threads of another time? While stressing the importance of historically accurate costuming (outfits) and accoutrements for first- person interpreters, there are many reasons compromises are made - perhaps a tight budget or lack of skilled construction personnel. Items such as shoes and eyeglasses are usually a sticking point when assembling a truly accurate outfit. It has been suggested that when visitors spot inaccurate details, interpreter credibility is downgraded and visitors launch into a frame of mind to find other inaccuracies. This may be true of visitors who are historical reenactors, buffs, or other interpreters. Most visitors, though, lack the heightened awareness to recognize the difference between authentic period detailing and the less-than-perfect substitutions. But everyone will notice a wristwatch, sunglasses, or tennis shoes. We have a responsibility to the public not to misrepresent the past; otherwise we are not preserving history but instead creating our own fiction and calling it the truth. Realistically, the appearance of the interpreter, our information base, our techniques, and our environment all affect the first-person experience. Historically accurate costuming perfection is laudable and reinforces academic credence. The minute details can be a springboard to important educational concepts; but the outfit is not the linchpin on which successful interpretation hangs. -

Walsh: The Rinceau Design, the Minor Arts and the St. Louis Psalter (Under the direction of Dr. Jaroslav Folda) The Saint Louis Psalter (Bibliothèque National MS Lat. 10525) is an unusual and intriguing manuscript. Created between 1250 and 1270, it is a prayer book designed for the private devotions of King Louis IX of France and features 78 illustrations of Old Testament scenes set in an ornate architectural setting. Surrounding these elements is a heavy, multicolored border that uses a repeating pattern of a leaf encircled by vines, called a rinceau. When compared to the complete corpus of mid-13th century art, the Saint Louis Psalter's rinceau design has its origin outside the manuscript tradition, from architectural decoration and metalwork and not other manuscripts.
