Journal of Academic Perspectives Religion, Politics, and Public Discourse: Bruce Springsteen and the Public Church of Roll Frederick L. Downing, Professor of Philosophy & Religious Studies, Valdosta State University and Jonathan W. Downing, Co-Director, Screaming Shih-Tzu Productions Abstract The thesis of this paper is that Bruce Springsteen’s art participates in a musical public square in which the outsider can come up close and overhear a dialogue that has been going on for centuries. Following the work of Robert Detweiler on religion and public life, this paper starts from the premise that the bard’s music, like literature, creates a type of public square or a form of public discourse where urgent matters of human survival, like the nature and nurture of a just state, are expressed, a call for social justice can be heard, and faith and hope for the future can be assimilated. Using the theory of Martin Marty on religion and civic life, the paper further describes Springsteen’s work as the creation of a “public church” beyond sectarian demand which is open to all and approximates, in his language, a true “land of hopes and dreams.” The paper uses the theory of Walter Brueggemann on the ancient church idea to demonstrate the nature and dimension of Springsteen’s “public church.” Using Brueggemann’s theory, Springsteen’s Wrecking Ball album is shown to have both a prophetic and priestly function. As a writer and performer, Springsteen demonstrates on this album and on the Wrecking Ball tour that he not only speaks truth to power, but attempts to create a sense of alternative vision and alternative community to the unjust status quo. -

Bishakh's Som's graphic memoir, Spellboundserves as a reminder that trans memoirs need not hinge on transition narratives, or at least not on the ones we are used to seeing. Seductively approachable, Gamblers' sunny sound masks the tragedy and despair that populate the band's debut album. Peter Guralnick's homage to writing about music, 'Looking to Get Lost', shows Catch a Wave: The Rise good music writing gets the music into the readers' head. -

Clark Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts June 2016 An Abstract of the Thesis of Daniel Bromfield for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the School of Journalism and Communications to be taken June 2016 Title: Rock Music's Crusade Of Authenticity Prof. Thomas Wheeler This thesis attempts to define rock music's standards of authenticity and explore their origins. Included are comparison of rock's standards of authenticity to those of other genres and an exploration of how authenticity has been perceived throughout the history of rock music. This study argues that rock's standards of authenticity are unusual among pop music genres in that they entail artists both writing their own songs and playing their own instruments. This is in contrast to genres like hip hop, contemporary pop, and R&B, which have their own quite different standards of authenticity. Quotes from rock fans, critics, and musicians are used to provide insight into rock's standards of authenticity and how they developed over time. ii Acknowledgements I would like to first and foremost thank my father for introducing me to music. OLLI CAL, 2020 fall online syllabus Instructor: Pete Elman Course Title: "It's All About the Song" Sub-title: "The Mount Olympus of American pop-rock songwriters" Course description : The essence of popular music is the song; whether it is folk, pop, rock, R&B, soul or country, the song is the core of the popular record. This course examines the lives and work of eight great songwriter/artists of the golden era of rock and roll. We will study the contributions of Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, the team of Carole King and Gerry Goffin, Brian Wilson, the duo of Barry Mann and Cynthia Weill, Paul Simon, Jackson Browne and Joni Mitchell. Through the use of audio, video, stories and live in-class music, we will look at, listen to and break down the musical and lyrical components of songs by these composers, in order to better understand and appreciate the artistry, insight and social context these songwriters brought to popular music. Class description: The course will be broken up chronologically, focusing on one songwriter each week. Each session will include: --A thorough, background lecture about each composer, including the musical style most associated with them and stories, sometimes primary source. --A slide show with photographs, charts, maps and information on each composer. --In depth analysis of select lyrics from songs by each songwriter --Audio CD versions of songs --select video clips culled from film documentaries of each songwriter and other artists who performed their songs --live musical, examples of chords, rhythms, instrumentation, styles, etc…played on piano, organ, synthesizer (strings, horns, bells) guitar, bass and vocals by instructor during class. -

PROFILES WE ARE ALIVE Bruce Springsteen at sixty-two. by David Remnick JULY 30, 2012 Springsteen wants his audience to leave the arena, as he commands them, with “your back hurting, your voice sore, and your sexual organs stimulated.” Photograph by Julian Broad. early half a century ago, when Elvis Presley was Nfilming “Harum Scarum” and “Help!” was on the charts, a moody, father-haunted, yet uncannily charismatic Shore rat named Bruce Springsteen was building a small reputation around central Jersey as a guitar player in a band called the Castiles. The band was named for the lead singer’s favorite brand of soap. Its members were from Freehold, an industrial town half an hour inland from the boardwalk carnies and the sea. The Castiles performed at sweet sixteens and Elks-club dances, at drive-in movie theatres and ShopRite ribbon cuttings, at a mobile-home park in Farmingdale, at the Matawan-Keyport Rollerdrome. Once, they played for the patients at a psychiatric hospital, in Marlboro. A gentleman dressed in a suit came to the stage and, in an introductory speech that ran some twenty minutes, declared the Castiles “greater than the Beatles.” At which point a doctor intervened and escorted him back to his room. One spring afternoon in 1966, the Castiles, with dreams of making it big and making it quick, drove to a studio at the Brick Mall Shopping Center and recorded two original songs, “Baby I” and “That’s What You Get.” Mainly, though, they played an array of covers, from Glenn Miller’s “In the Mood” to the G-Clefs’ “I Understand.” They did Sonny and Cher, Sam and Dave, Don & Juan, the Who, the Kinks, the Stones, the Animals.
