SURVIVAL HACKS OVER 200 WAYS TO USE EVERYDAY ITEMS FOR WILDERNESS SURVIVAL CREEK STEWART, author of Build the Perfect Bug Out Bag AVON, MASSACHUSETTS Contents Introduction CHAPTER 1 Shelter Hacks CHAPTER 2 Water Hacks CHAPTER 3 Fire Hacks CHAPTER 4 Food Hacks CHAPTER 5 Staying Healthy CHAPTER 6 Gear Hacks CHAPTER 7 Forward Movement CHAPTER 8 Everyday Carry (EDC) Kits on a Budget Conclusion Acknowledgments Introduction sur-VIV-al HACK-ing verb The act of using what you have to get what you need to stay alive in any situation. “Hacking” is making do with what you’ve got. It has three aspects: 1. Using knowledge of basic survival principles 2. Innovative thinking 3. Exploiting available resources KNOWLEDGE OF BASIC SURVIVAL PRINCIPLES Knowledge is the basis for almost every successful survival skill. You can get it from reading books, listening to the advice and stories of others, and watching the actions of others. However, the most important way to gain true knowledge of survival principles is trial and error with your own two hands. No method of learning takes the place of hands-on, personal experience. Your options in a survival scenario will ultimately depend on your understanding of basic survival principles that surround shelter, water, fire, and food. INNOVATIVE THINKING I’ve often said that innovation is the most important survival skill. Innovation can be defined in survival as creatively using available resources to execute a plan formulated using pre-existing survival knowledge. At the end of the day, the application of survival principles is only limited by your ability to creatively use them.

  • Back to the Basics: Bait/Lures
Spring 2009 by Amidea Daniel and Adam Spangler Back to the Basics Bait vs. Lure: What is the Difference? Anglers use many different types of baits and lures to catch the big one. STATE OF CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND GAME BUREAU OF MARINE FISHERIES FISH BULLETIN No. 103 Trolling Gear In California By W. L. SCOFIELD MARINE FISHERIES BRANCH 1956 1 FIGURE 1. Outline map of California, showing the location of the more important fishing ports 2 3 4 FOREWORD Trolling may be conducted from a small boat thereby requiring a low original investment and the gear used is relat- ively inexpensive compared with netting operations. As a result, this manner of fishing has attracted hundreds of commercial fishermen along the 1,000 miles of California coast. In recent years, commercial men are being out- numbered by the host of sport fishermen, many of whom do trolling at some time during the year. Sport fishermen pioneered ocean trolling in California and have initiated several of the improvements that have been adopted during the 75 years since ocean trolling started in this State. An account, from time to time, of the gear and methods of operating is desirable for each of our important fisher- ies. Not only may changes be noted, but gear and methods of fishing have a direct bearing when appraising the re- cords of catch per unit of fishing effort in attempts to determine changes in the supply of fish in the ocean. The following descriptions of gear (when not dated) apply to 1955. W. L. SCOFIELD September, 1955 5 6 1. DEFINITIONS Each occupational craft invents, for its own use, a set of designating nicknames, but California fishermen in general and trollers especially, have not standardized their names for the different parts of the gear and the methods of oper- ating.

  • Trolling (Fishing) from Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia
Trolling (fishing) From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Trolling is a method of fishing where one or more fishing lines, baited with lures or bait fish, are drawn through the water. This may be behind a moving boat, or by slowly winding the line in when fishing from a static position, or even sweeping the line from side-to-side, e.g. when fishing from a jetty. Trolling is used to catch pelagic fish such as salmon, mackerel and kingfish. Trolling can be phonetically confused with trawling, a different method of fishing where a net (trawl) is drawn through the water instead of lines. Trolling is used both for recreational and commercial fishing whereas trawling is used mainly for commercial fishing. Trolling from a moving boat involves moving quite slowly through the water. This can be accomplished with the use of a special trolling motor. Multiple lines are often used, and outriggers can be used to spread the lines more widely and reduce their chances of tangling. Downriggers can also be used to keep the lures or baits trailing at a desired depth. "Trolling for blue fish" lithograph by Currier & Ives, 1866.
