Galloway, Ph.D. Dean, Honors College Abstract In my thesis, I am going to delve into the origin of the religion we call Vodou, its influences, and its migration from Haiti to New Orleans from the 1700’s to the early 1800’s with a small focus on the current state of Vodou in New Orleans. I will start with referencing West Africa, and the religion that was brought from West Africa, and combined with Catholicism in order to form Vodou. From there I will discuss the effect a high Catholic population, slavery, and the Haitian Revolution had on the creation of Vodou. I also plan to discuss how Vodou has changed with the change of the state of Catholicism, and slavery in New Orleans. As well as pointing out how Vodou has affected the formation of New Orleans culture, politics, and society. Introduction The term Vodou is derived from the word Vodun which means “spirit/god” in the Fon language spoken by the Fon people of West Africa, and brought to Haiti around the sixteenth century. -

The House of Dance and Feathers Mardi Gras Indian Museum—New Orleans, LA Project Locus: Patrick Rhodes, Executive Director In the months following Hurricane Katrina the forces of nature seemed to have defeated New Orleans. Profession- als questioned the wisdom of rebuilding a city lying largely below sea level on a storm-prone coast, and government officials seemed helpless in organizing the cleanup and beginning a rebuilding process. As recovery plans got under way elsewhere on the Gulf Coast, it seemed New Orleans, and especially its poor, largely African-American districts, would remain forever in ruin. Some residents, however, refused to accept this pros- pect. For them, New Orleans was not a “disaster waiting to happen again”—a possible trap—but rather home to a vibrant community with a rich cultural heritage. One of these was a community activist, Ronald Lewis. In the Lower Ninth Ward, Lewis was known as the founder and curator of the House of Dance and Feathers Mardi Gras Indian Museum. Housed in a garage alongside his home, the museum had contained an extensive collection of relics celebrating the city’s African-American heritage, including costumes from its largely forgotten “second-line” Mardi Gras festivities. Like most structures in the Lower Ninth Ward, the museum was destroyed by the flooding that followed the storm. But its redesign and reconstruction eloquently express the importance of rebuilding New Orleans as a living city, rather than a tourist site. At the core of the effort was an activist collaboration between Lewis and the architect and educator Patrick Rhodes, but it also involved countless hours of volunteer work by students, profession- als, and community residents, aided by a significant grant from the Charles Engelhard Foundation. -

During this period, New Orleans’ vendors labored in the streets of diverse neighborhoods where they did more than sell a vital commodity. As “Nourishing Networks” demonstrates, the food economy provided the disenfranchised—people of color, women, and recent migrants—a means to connect themselves to the public culture of the city, despite legal prohibitions intended to keep them on the margins. Those who were legally marginalized exercised considerable influence over the city’s public culture, shaping both economic and social interactions among urban residents in the public sphere. -

The Mythology of Marie Laveau in and out of the Archive (2019) Directed by Dr
CARTER, MORGAN E., M.A. Looking For Laveau: The Mythology of Marie Laveau In and Out of the Archive (2019) Directed by Dr. Tara T. Green. 97 pp. The purpose of this work is to engage with the proliferation of the myth of Marie Laveau, the nineteenth-century Voodoo figure of New Orleans, Louisiana and its multiple potentialities as both a tool of investment in whiteness as a form of intellectual property as well as a subject for myth as uplift, refusal, and resistance in terms of southern black womanhood and the critically imaginary. In this work, I create a trajectory of work that has endeavored to “recover” Laveau within institutionalized forms of knowing, specifically taking to task projects of recovery that attempt to present Laveau as a figure of strong leadership for women through institutionalized spaces and forms of knowledge, such as the archive while simultaneously dismissing other, “nonacademic” proliferations of the Laveau myth. This thesis serves to decenter the research, reading, and writing of the Laveau mythology as within the academy, which ostensibly serves white and normative generated and centered ways of knowing, identifying, and articulating, in favor of a methodology that accounts for cultural forms of mythologies that center memory, lineage, and communal identification. Through this critical work, I hope to supply a critical imaginary of what a Creole/Cajun southern feminism would look like, and how it is deeply intertwined with gendered and racialized nuances that are specific to region and community.
