Felix Tan Thiam Kim, Singapore Institute of Management, Global Education, Singapore The Sixth Asian Conference on Asian Studies 2016 Official Conference Proceedings Abstract After winning overwhelmingly in Myanmar’s November 2015 elections, the National League for Democracy (NLD) finally assumes power in April 2016. They will also be forming the bulk of the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (or the Assembly of the Union) and helming many of the ministries and cabinet seats. This effectively gives the NLD a clear mandate to form the next government. At the helm of the NLD success has been Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, a political prisoner since 1988 until her release from house arrest in 2010. Nevertheless, Aung San Suu Kyi has since made known that she would be ‘above the President’. However, will the aura of her power dimmed in the coming months if much needed reforms is not seen as forthcoming as before? This paper aims to analyse some of the challenges that this country will encounter in the coming months. What will the role of the Tatmadaw (Myanmar Armed Forces) be? Are we seeing a tacit approval by the military of the power and influence of Aung San Suu Kyi? Major powers and the international community are watching closely to the developments of this nascent democratic government in transition. How will this democratically elected government be able to demonstrate to the world that democracy is thriving? Will there be cooperation or will there be conflict? Euro-Burma Office 2 – 9 April 2016 Political Monitor 2016 POLITICAL MONITOR NO. 8 OFFICIAL MEDIA POLITICAL PRISONERS, ACTIVISTS, STUDENTS FREED UNDER PRESIDENTIAL PARDON Myanmar’s new government has released 113 political ‘prisoners of conscience’ including political activists and students facing trial connected with political, according to police sources. Included were 69 students from Thayawady Prison. The release comes a day after newly appointed State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi pledged to strive for the granting of presidential pardon to political prisoners and other political activists deemed to be unfairly detained. Concerning those who remain detained for political reasons but come under the umbrella of people eligible for pardon, the State Counsellor’s Office released a statement on 8 April stating that the cases of those who were attending hearings on 8 April were revoked but the process for dropping charges against those who had not yet been assigned a fixed court date will require further work. Aung San Suu Kyi pledged in the statement that the process for releasing the remaining detainees would be carried out when courts reopened after the Myanmar New Year holidays which ends on 20 April. Many activists and human rights group welcomed the released and urged the new government to end the cycle of political arrest and detention as well as releasing all other prisoners of conscience— including those students who are facing charges in other courts. 2,178 prisoners were also released for good behavior annually granted by the Director-General of the Correctional Department.1 WORLD LEADERS CONGRATULATES PRESIDENT HTIN KYAW US President Barack Obama phoned his Myanmar counterpart President Htin Kyaw on 6 April on the latter’s assumption of the Presidency and to express his support for Myanmar’s new government.

Preface In this paper, the current state of national language education at the introductory stage in Myanmar is discussed based on the analysis of textbooks used in schools. Myanmar had been under military rule for a long time before it transitioned to civilian rule in 2011. The National League for Democracy (NLD), the opposition party led by Aung San Suu Kyi, came to power in April 2016 after the general election held in November 2015. Htin Kyaw is now the President, and Myo Thein Gyi is the Minister of Education(1). Myanmar is attracting worldwide attention, and massive educational reforms are under way. Starting from June 2017, with assistance from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the primary education in Myanmar will receive new standards and new textbooks sequentially from grade 1 (Tanaka, 2015). A project that aims to thoroughly reform Myanmar’s primary education, including textbooks, by studying the primary education in Japan has been ongoing since 2014(2). Students who are in grade 2 or higher when the new curriculum is introduced will finish all elementary school grades using the old curriculum. Only new grade-1(G1) students will be taught using the new curricula and textbooks as their grades progress(3).
