NEWSLETTER 119 (June 10, 2013) NEWSLETTER 119 (June 10, 2013) EDUCATION THROUGH CHESS – INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR IN BUCHAREST, ROMANIA The Romanian Chess Federation organized together with the National Education Ministry the "Education through chess" seminar in Bucharest which was held on June 4-5, 2013 at the Romanian Academy. This event was honored by the presence of the Minister of Education, Mr. Remus Pricopie, the Deputy Minister of Education, Mrs. Stefania Duminica, six members of the Romanian Parliament, two famous members of the Romanian Academy, managers of education authorities and schools and many chess lovers. The event was supported by the important contribution of some great friends from abroad: there were present Boyko Hristov, Press Director of the European Chess Union and Sergei Bargan, General Secretary of the Moldovan Chess Federation, who shared during the two days of the seminar their expertize and useful information from their organizations. The other contributions were the Garry Kasparov's video message addressed to the participants and skype live presentations of the President of the European Chess © Ecuonline.net Page 1 Union Silvio Danailov, Tomasz Sielicki, Deputy President of ECU, Kevin O'Connell - Executive Secretary of FIDE CIS Commission, Alessandro Dominici - Federal Instructor, member of the Italian Chess in School Commission. The organizers have received relevant information regarding chess in schools from the USA by the courtesy of Mrs. Susan Houston, US Chess, from Mr. Esteban Jaureguizar, Uruguayan Chess Federation, from Mr. Leo Battesti, France and, of course, from many Romanian collaborators. The key support was offered by the Educational Sciences Institute of Romania, the national authority in the field of educational system curriculum. The organizers concluded that the seminar was extremely useful in achieving its goals, thanked everybody who supported the event and expressed hopes to improve in the near future the developing of chess in Romanian schools. Delia Duca (left), a chess player representing Romania at several championships for problems solving, ranked VI-th at the last National Championships for problems solving, was crowned Miss Universe Romania 2012, has a master degree in computer science and works as a software engineer. Official website: www.frsah.ro BIDDING PROCEDURE FOR ECU COMPETITIONS IN 2015 In the Circular Letter No. 1/2013 European Chess Union published the Invitation for Bids for the competitions in its calendar in 2015. You can find complete documentation and more details on the website in the section "Resources – Bidding Procedure". All the bids must reach the ECU office by 01 July 2013, 4 p.m. (CET). According to the decision of the European Chess Union Board, competitions related to national federations – members of the European Union or other groups of countries (EU Youth Championship, EU Individual Championship, Mitropa Cup) will not be part of the calendar of the European Chess Union, nor will there be any bidding procedure open for them. In addition, these competitions will be excluded from the existing bidding procedure for 2015 and no bids for them will be collected. Official website: www.ecuonline.net © Ecuonline.net Page 3 THE SPANISH WOMEN CHAMPIONSHIP AND THE SPANISH RAPID CHAMPIONSHIP WILL BE INTERNATIONAL OPEN TOURNAMENTS IN 2013 The historic Chess City of Linares will be the venue of a big Chess Festival this summer. Five Spanish Chess Championships: Individual, Women, and Rapid, as well as the Teams: Primera Division (“First League”) and Division de Honor (“Honor League”), will be held in Linares from August 19th until September 14th. The playing hall will be the Auditorium “El Pósito” http://elpositolinares.es/posito_edificio.html (Information in Spanish). The schedule will be as follows: 19th to 25th August: Spanish Women Chess Championship (International) (nine rounds) Spanish Team Championship ”PRIMERA DIVISION” (“First League”) 26th and 27th August Spanish Rapid Chess Championship (International) 29th August to 6th September: Individual Spanish Chess Championship 8th to 14th September: Spanish Team Championship ” DIVISION DE HONOR” (“Honor League”) International Women Tournament (Round Robin valid for WGM norms) Both the Women and the Rapid Chess Championship will be played consecutively and will be open for any foreign player. Novosadski ŠK DDOR was second in the final ranking with 19.5 game points, while Vodovod (Kragujevac) won the third place with 18 game points. The tournament was held from 20-26 May, 2013 in Banja Koviljaca. The Serbian Club Cup was played in 7 rounds, according to the Swiss system with time control of 90 minutes for 40 moves + 30 minutes for the rest of the game + 30 seconds increment per move, starting for move one. Karlovych (UKR) MATTERS DISCUSSED At the beginning of the meeting, we addressed the items discussed in the official WOM report submitted to FIDE. The Chairperson (Ms. Polgar) especially praised FIDE for the Women’s World Blitz and Rapid Championships in Saudi Arabia which had a substantially increased prize fund, though it was only one third of the prize in the Open section. The total prize fund in the Women’s championships were $250,000 for each event. Beatriz Marinello reported on her project “Smart Girl” on behalf of the Social Action commission, which included projects in Uganda, Chile, France and the US. This projects seeks to increase participation by girls in chess in those countries. Martha Fierro elaborated on the project about chess in women prisons in Genoa, Italy, which involved the training of refugees in Italy who in turn, train women prisoners. Sophia Rohde from the United States shared some of the work their federation is in doing to promote chess for girls in the USA. They subsequently presented a video showing various interviews with young girls in chess, highlighting the benefits and challenges that they experience in chess.

    NEWSLETTER 158 (May 29, 2014) ECU PRESIDENT SILVIO DANAILOV MEETS WITH THE PRESIDENT OF THE ITALIAN CHESS FEDERATION, MR. GIANPIETRO PAGNONCELLI On 21st of May, 2014 in Milan, the ECU President Silvio Danailov met with the Presidеnt of the Italian Chess Federation, Mr. Gianpietro Pagnoncelli. In a pleasant conversation at the office of the Italian Chess Federation they discussed the work done by Silvio Danailov and his team during the last 4 years. Silvio Danailov expressed his special thanks to Mr. Pagnoncelli for his great contribution in mobilization of the Italian members of the European Parliament during the campaign for adoption of the ECU program “Chess in School”. As we have already informed you the Italian MEP, Mr. Mario Mauro, was among the most active deputies, who supported the efforts of Mr. Danailov. Both Presidents discussed also the new joint project between ECU and UNESCO, “Chess as UNESCO intangible world heritage”. Silvio Danailov proposed one member of the commission, which will be responsible for this topic, to be elected by the Italian Chess Federation. Mr. Pagnoncelli said that this will be decided on the next ICF Board meeting. ECU President congrtulated Mr. Gianpietro Pagnoncelli for his sucessful 10-year career as President of the Italian Chess Federation, at the beginning of which Italy had just 2 grandmasters. Now ICF can be proud with 11 GMs, one of them, Fabiano Caruana is currently No 5 in the world. Silvio Danailov congratulated Mr. Pagnoncelli also for the acceptance of the ICF for a member of the Italian Olympic Committee rightly aloud. This achievement happened for the first time in the history of chess.
