NEWSLETTER 158 (May 29, 2014) ECU PRESIDENT SILVIO DANAILOV MEETS WITH THE PRESIDENT OF THE ITALIAN CHESS FEDERATION, MR. GIANPIETRO PAGNONCELLI On 21st of May, 2014 in Milan, the ECU President Silvio Danailov met with the Presidеnt of the Italian Chess Federation, Mr. Gianpietro Pagnoncelli. In a pleasant conversation at the office of the Italian Chess Federation they discussed the work done by Silvio Danailov and his team during the last 4 years. Silvio Danailov expressed his special thanks to Mr. Pagnoncelli for his great contribution in mobilization of the Italian members of the European Parliament during the campaign for adoption of the ECU program “Chess in School”. As we have already informed you the Italian MEP, Mr. Mario Mauro, was among the most active deputies, who supported the efforts of Mr. Danailov. Both Presidents discussed also the new joint project between ECU and UNESCO, “Chess as UNESCO intangible world heritage”. Silvio Danailov proposed one member of the commission, which will be responsible for this topic, to be elected by the Italian Chess Federation. Mr. Pagnoncelli said that this will be decided on the next ICF Board meeting. ECU President congrtulated Mr. Gianpietro Pagnoncelli for his sucessful 10-year career as President of the Italian Chess Federation, at the beginning of which Italy had just 2 grandmasters. Now ICF can be proud with 11 GMs, one of them, Fabiano Caruana is currently No 5 in the world. Silvio Danailov congratulated Mr. Pagnoncelli also for the acceptance of the ICF for a member of the Italian Olympic Committee rightly aloud. This achievement happened for the first time in the history of chess.

No. 3 THE UKRAINIAN WEEKLY SUNDAY, JANUARY 17, 2010 5 2009: THE YEAR IN REVIEW A turbulent year for Ukraine urbulent was the way to describe 2009 for Ukraine, which plunged into financial crisis. No other European country suffered as much as TUkraine, whose currency was devalued by more than 60 percent since its peak of 4.95 hrv per $1 in August 2008. In addition, the country’s industrial production fell by 31 percent in 2009. Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko con- fronted the challenge of minimizing the crisis fallout, while at the same time campaigning for the 2010 presi- dential elections. Her critics attacked her for pursuing populist policies, such as increasing wages and hiring more government staff, when the state treasury was broke as early as the spring. Ms. Tymoshenko herself admitted that her gov- ernment would not have been able to make all its pay- ments without the help of three tranches of loans, worth approximately $10.6 billion, provided by the International Monetary Fund. Her critics believe that instead of borrowing money, Ms. Tymoshenko should have been introducing radical reforms to the Ukrainian economy, reducing government waste, eliminating out- dated Soviet-era benefits and trimming the bureaucracy. DUBAI Emirate of UAE with more than thirty years of chess organizational experience. Many regional, continental and worldwide tournaments have been organized since the year 1985: The World Junior Chess Championship in Sharjah, UAE won by Max Dlugy in 1985, then the 1986 Chess Olympiad in Dubai won by USSR, the Asian Team Chess Championship won by the Philippines. Dubai hosted also the Asian Cities Championships in 1990, 1992 and 1996, the FIDE Grand Prix (Rapid, knock out) in 2002, the Arab Individual Championship in 1984, 1992 and 2004, and the World Blitz & Rapid Chess Championship 2014. Dubai Chess & Culture Club is established in 1979, as a member of the UAE Chess Federation and was proclaimed on 3/7/1981 by the Higher Council for Sports & Youth. It was first located in its previous premises in Deira–Dubai as a temporarily location for the new building to be over. Since its launching, the Dubai Chess & Culture Club has played a leading role in the chess activity in UAE, achieving for the country many successes on the international, continental and Arab levels. The Club has also played an imminent role through its administrative members who contributed in promoting chess and leading the chess activity along with their chess colleagues throughout UAE. “Sheikh Rashid Bin Hamdan Al Maktoum Cup” The Dubai Open championship, the SHEIKH RASHID BIN HAMDAN BIN RASHID AL MAKTOUM CUP, the strongest tournament in Arabic countries for many years, has been organized annually as an Open Festival since 1999, it attracts every year over 200 participants. Boris Gelfand’s Remarkable Comeback Yochanan Afek reports back from the star-studded Netanya International Chess Festival A big International Festival was organised in the coastal Israeli city of Netanya by the Israeli Chess Federation and the local municipality, supported by the generosity of businessman Roman Abramovich, likely best known to the readers as the owner of Chelsea Football Club. It has been quite a while since Netanya last hosted a strong international chess event, but the city has a long and respectable tradition of grandmaster tournaments. They were initially part of the popular Schach-Kait (Chess & Holiday) festival. Over the years various master tournaments were held as well as many editions of a grandmaster crown group, whose winners included the world- class icons Bobby Fischer (1968), Sammy Reshevsky (1969), Lubomir Kavalek (1971 and 1973), and Jan Timman (1975), as well as local heroes Yair Kraidman (1964) and Moshe Czerniak (1965).
