Rosa Katz: Oral History Transcript
Rosa Katz: Oral History Transcript www.wisconsinhistory.org/HolocaustSurvivors/Katz. asp Name: Rachel (Rosa) Goldberg Katz (1924–2012) Birth Place: Lodz, Poland Arrived in Wisconsin: 1953, Oshkosh Project Name: Oral Histories: Wisconsin Survivors Rosa Katz of the Holocaust Biography: Rachel (Rosa) Goldberg Katz was born in Lodz, Poland, on May 6, 1924, to a well-to-do family with liberal Jewish beliefs. In 1935, her sister and brother-in-law immigrated to Palestine while the rest of the family remained in Poland. When the Germans occupied Lodz in 1939, 15-year-old Rosa was among the thousands of Jews crowded into the city's ghetto. Three years later, in July 1942, her mother was deported from the ghetto and never heard from again. In August 1944, the Lodz Ghetto was liquidated. Its starving residents, including Rosa, her father, brother, and sister-in-law, Hela, were all shipped to Auschwitz. There she was separated from her father and brother. She never saw them again. German officials mistakenly sent Rosa and hundreds of other Jewish women (instead of French prisoners) to work at the Krupp munitions factory in Berlin. For eight months, Rosa assembled delicate timepieces for German bombs. In March 1945, she was transferred to the death camp in Ravensbruck, Germany. The Swedish Red Cross liberated the camp within a month of her arrival. Its inhabitants were transported to Sweden where Rosa recuperated for several years. She married Bernard Katz there (also a survivor). In April 1948, they came to the U.S. Initially settling in North Carolina, the Katz family moved to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, in 1953. -

Trust Account Basics
TRUST ACCOUNT (Also known as an IOLTA account – Interest on Lawyer’s Trust Account) Is a trust account required for all attorneys in Arizona? No, not all attorneys will require the use of a trust account. Public, corporate and indigent representation agency attorneys are a few that do not require the use of a trust account. Also, attorneys who do not accept money that belongs in the trust account do not need one. Be sure to read Rules 42 E.R. 1.5 (fees), 1.15 (safekeeping property) and Rule 43, Ariz.R.Sup.Ct. I. How to determine whether your practice requires a trust account. 1. What does your fee agreement determine? As stated in Rule 42, E.R. 1.5, written agreements are required with every client. This should include the scope of representation and how much. Therefore, does your fee agreement say earned upon receipt or advanced fees and costs. 2. Do you hold money on behalf of a client (settlement, hold for division of property, etc)? 3. If you do not accept any money in advance for work, costs (filing fees, expert witnesses etc) or from third parties (settlements, etc) you may not need a trust account. Review the rules again to be sure that you do not require the use of a trust account. Also you may call ethics counsel at 602-340-7284. 4. If you accept money in advance for fees and costs, you will need a trust account. 5. If you answered yes to question 2, you will need a trust account. -
Domestic Blitz: a Revisionist History of the Fifties
Domestic Blitz: A Revisionist History of the Fifties Gaile McGregor The fir st version of this paper was written for a 1990 conference at the University of Kansas entitled "Ikë s America." It was an interesting event—though flawed somewhat by the organizers' decision to schedule sessions and design program flow according to academic category. Eminently sensible from an administrative standpoint, this arrangement worked counter to the articulated aim of stimulating interdisciplinary dialogue by encouraging participants to spend all their time hanging out with birds of their own feather—economists with economists, historians with historians, literati with literati. Like many of the would-be innovative conferences, symposia, andevenfull-scale academic programsmounted over the last decade, this one was multi- rather than truly inter-disciplinary. This didn' t mean that I wasn t able to find any critical grist for my mill. Substantive aspects aside, the two things I found most intriguing about what I heard during those few days were, first, the number and variety of people who had recently "rediscovered" the fifties, and second, the extent to which the pattern of their rediscovery paralleled my own. Arriving there convinced I had made a major breakthrough in elucidating the darker and more complex feelings that undercolored the broadly presumed conservatism of the decade, what I heard over and over again from presenter s was the same (gleeful or earnest) revisions, the same sense of surprise at how much had been overlooked. Two messages might be taken from this. The first is that the fifties is suddenly relevant again. The second and perhaps more sobering concerns the mind-boggling power of 0026-3079/93/3401 -005$ 1.50/0 5 American culture to foster an almost complete collective amnesia about events and attitudes of the not-very-distant past. -

DEDICATION For my Great Aunt Vida, an artist and teacher, who was the star of her own story in an age when women were supporting characters. She was tough and kind, stingy and giving in equal measures. Vida Esta gave herself a middle name, because she could and always wanted one. Ms. Light was my first superheroine and she didn’t need super powers. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Three years ago, I woke up in the middle of the night with an idea for research that was daunting. This thesis is the beginning of bringing that idea to life. So many people helped me along the way. -
