Hakobyan FORENSIC MEDICINE Handout for foreign students YEREVAN 2007 This handbook is adopted by the Methodical Council of Foreign Students of the University DEATH AND ITS CAUSES Thanatology deals with death in all its aspects. Death is of two types: (1) somatic, systemic or clinical, and (2) molecular or cellular. Somatic Death: It is the complete and irreversible stoppage of the circulation, respiration and brain functions, but there is no legal definition of death. THE MOMENT OF DEATH: Historically (medically and legally), the concept of death was that of "heart and respiration death", i.e. stoppage of spontaneous heart and breathing functions. Heart-lung bypass machines, mechanical respirators, and other devices, however have changed this medically in favor of a new concept "brain death", that is, irreversible loss of Cerebral function. Brain death is of three types: (1) Cortical or cerebral death with an intact brain stem. This produces a vegetative state in which respiration continues, but there is total loss of power of perception by the senses. This state of deep coma can be produced by cerebral hypoxia, toxic conditions or widespread brain injury. (2) Brain stem death, where the cerebrum may be intact, though cut off functionally by the stem lesion. The loss of the vital centers that control respiration, and of the ascending reticular activating system that sustains consciousness, cause the victim to be irreversibly comatose and incapable of spontaneous breathing. This can be produced by raised intracranial pressure, cerebral oedema, intracranial haemorrhage, etc.(3) Whole brain death (combination of 1 and 2). -

Lee Goff Received: 1 June 2009 / Accepted: 4 June 2009 / Published online: 25 June 2009 Ó Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2009 Abstract Decomposition of an exposed cadaver is a continuous process, beginning at the moment of death and ending when the body is reduced to a dried skeleton. Traditional estimates of the period of time since death or post-mortem interval have been based on a series of grossly observable changes to the body, including livor mortis, algor mortis, rigor mortis and similar phenomena. These changes will be described briefly and their relative significance discussed. More recently, insects, mites and other arthropods have been increasingly used by law enforcement to provide an estimate of the post-mortem interval. Although the process of decomposition is continuous, it is useful to divide this into a series of five stages: Fresh, Bloated, Decay, Postdecay and Skeletal. Here these stages are characterized by physical parameters and related assemblages of arthropods, to provide a framework for consideration of the decomposition process and acarine relationships to the body. Recognize the person in a permanent vegetative state as a liv- ing person with rights to self-determination, bodily integrity, and medical privacy. 2. Recognize that people in a permanent vegetative state are not like other people who are severely disabled in that they have abso- lutely no interest in continued living. 3. Recognize that for people in a permanent vegetative state, the current legal presumption in favor of indefinite tube feeding generally does not allow their preferences or their interests to prevail; change that presumption only for people in a permanent vegetative state to favor discontinuing tube feeding. 4. Require judicial or quasi-judicial review of continued tube feeding after a specified period of time following the onset of the per- son's vegetative state, such as two years, well beyond the period when diagnosis of permanent vegetative state can be determined to a high- degree of medical certainty. -

(A lamp of G-d is the soul of man (Mishlei 20:27 — רֵנ ,הָוהְי תַמְשִׁנ םָדָא תַמְשִׁנ ,הָוהְי רֵנ Introduction Each and every person who is alive or will ever be alive will die; this difficult truth hovers over us all. Along with the existential question of life itself, is the question, what happens to my body after death? How will the flesh that once was vibrant be disposed of? How can this happen in a way that honors the life of the person, comforts the mourners, and is practical regarding the land and workers that will be dealing with the body (heretofore call ‘the met’). In reviewing the topic of burial in the literature, we find that in ancient Israel, people were once buried in caves - considered burial in the ground. There was also a time when a met was buried in a field and after the flesh disintegrated, the bones were gathered and placed in the family ancestral cave, mound, or ossuary. Even as the tradition shifted from these practices, the minhag remained to bury in the ground. With over seven billion people on this earth, the current population will have to find places to be buried, even as the available earth to create proper burial sites will diminish over time. Fire cremation re-surfaced in the twentieth century as a viable option for interment1. Even as Teshuvot were written in the Reform, Conservative, and Orthodox movements that ruled against fire cremation, many Jews are creating a “consensus of the pious” that is questioning these rulings. -

UC Davis Office of the Attending Veterinarian Standards of Care Policy: SC-40-102 Date: 10/31/20 Enabled by: The Guide, APHIS, AVMA, IACUC /AV Supersedes: IACUC Policy, ALL Previous versions Title: Euthanasia Procedures for the UC Davis Animal Care Program I. Purpose: The purpose of this policy is to establish minimum standards for euthanasia for species in the lab animal setting. II. Policy: All units providing animal care must meet or exceed these minimum requirements for euthanasia based on the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, the Ag Guide and the AVMA Guidelines for the Euthanasia of Animals. Research staff shall use the methods approved in their animal protocol. Veterinary Staff and Husbandry staff may use an AVMA approved method as described below, provided the appropriate training and certification have been completed. III. Procedure: Refer to the AVMA Guidelines on Euthanasia for approved euthanasia methods: http://www.avma.org/KB/policies/Documents/euthanasia.pdf The agents and methods of euthanasia appropriate for rodent species are available in the AVMA Guidelines for the Euthanasia of Animals: 2020 Edition or subsequent revisions of that document. Euthanasia is the procedure of killing an animal rapidly, painlessly, and without distress. Euthanasia must be carried out by trained personnel using acceptable techniques in accordance with applicable regulations and policies. The method used should not interfere with postmortem evaluations. Proper euthanasia involves skilled personnel to help ensure that the technique is performed humanely and effectively and to minimize risk of injury to people. Personnel who perform euthanasia must have training and experience with the techniques to be used. -

Clara AlfsdotterClara Linnaeus University Dissertations No 413/2021 Clara Alfsdotter Bioarchaeological, Taphonomic, and Forensic Anthropological Studies of Remains Human and Forensic Taphonomic, Bioarchaeological, Corporeality Death of The The Corporeality of Death The aim of this work is to advance the knowledge of peri- and postmortem Bioarchaeological, Taphonomic, and Forensic Anthropological Studies corporeal circumstances in relation to human remains contexts as well as of Human Remains to demonstrate the value of that knowledge in forensic and archaeological practice and research. This article-based dissertation includes papers in bioarchaeology and forensic anthropology, with an emphasis on taphonomy. Studies encompass analyses of human osseous material and human decomposition in relation to spatial and social contexts, from both theoretical and methodological perspectives. In this work, a combination of bioarchaeological and forensic taphonomic methods are used to address the question of what processes have shaped mortuary contexts. Specifically, these questions are raised in relation to the peri- and postmortem circumstances of the dead in the Iron Age ringfort of Sandby borg; about the rate and progress of human decomposition in a Swedish outdoor environment and in a coffin; how this taphonomic knowledge can inform interpretations of mortuary contexts; and of the current state and potential developments of forensic anthropology and archaeology in Sweden. The result provides us with information of depositional history in terms of events that created and modified human remains deposits, and how this information can be used. Such knowledge is helpful for interpretations of what has occurred in the distant as well as recent pasts. In so doing, the knowledge of peri- and postmortem corporeal circumstances and how it can be used has been advanced in relation to both the archaeological and forensic fields.
