Tattle Co” 1963, pp. 269,US $5.00 C VI,100)* Introduction The Nezv ReHg ons of Japan by Harry Thomsen is an unusually attractive, splendidly illustrated, and very interesting presentation of a subject about wh.ch there is a great deal of interest but very little factual knowledge. The Charles E. Tuttle Co.. the publisher, is to be commended for its unusually fine format. Since this is only the second volume in English to deal with the total situation, the book is certain to be read widely, and it wii! give the general reader a reasonably satisfactory overall picture of these modern sects. It is extremely unfortunate, however, that it is not as accurate and thoroughly reliable as it should be Had the manuscript been submitted to any ciie of a number of competent scholars in the field before publica tion, some of the more serious errors at least could have been eliminated. And some of the inconsistencies would have been avoided had more care been taken to incorporate last minute additions in the body of the text as well as merely at the end of some chapters. SPIRITS AND IDENTITY IN NINETEENTH-CENTURY NORTHEASTERN JAPAN: HIRATA KOKUGAKU AND THE TSUGARU DISCIPLES by Gideon Fujiwara A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in The Faculty of Graduate Studies (Asian Studies) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) April 2013 © Gideon Fujiwara, 2013 ABSTRACT While previous research on kokugaku , or nativism, has explained how intellectuals imagined the singular community of Japan, this study sheds light on how posthumous disciples of Hirata Atsutane based in Tsugaru juxtaposed two “countries”—their native Tsugaru and Imperial Japan—as they transitioned from early modern to modern society in the nineteenth century. This new perspective recognizes the multiplicity of community in “Japan,” which encompasses the domain, multiple levels of statehood, and “nation,” as uncovered in recent scholarship. My analysis accentuates the shared concerns of Atsutane and the Tsugaru nativists toward spirits and the spiritual realm, ethnographic studies of commoners, identification with the north, and religious thought and worship. I chronicle the formation of this scholarly community through their correspondence with the head academy in Edo (later Tokyo), and identify their autonomous character. Hirao Rosen conducted ethnography of Tsugaru and the “world” through visiting the northern island of Ezo in 1855, and observing Americans, Europeans, and Qing Chinese stationed there. I show how Rosen engaged in self-orientation and utilized Hirata nativist theory to locate Tsugaru within the spiritual landscape of Imperial Japan. Through poetry and prose, leader Tsuruya Ariyo identified Mount Iwaki as a sacred pillar of Tsugaru, and insisted one could experience “enjoyment” from this life and beyond death in the realm of spirits. -

Religion or Magic? Some Remarks Concerning Divinatory Practices Mentioned in the Oldest Japanese Literature Nelly NAUMANN (Freiburg i. Br.) One of the most important human concerns has always been to know before- hand what the future would bring, whether a certain project or scheme would prove successful or a failure. If the future was thought to lie in the hands of the gods, the gods had to be asked to reveal it. But there might be yet other mecha- nisms which – if they only were known and could be used – would necessarily lead to the revelation of events to come. The many methods which were (and are) devised and employed everywhere in this world and through all times show how much energy man has devoted to this task. What are these methods? The Encyclopdia of Religion and Ethics (4: 776a, H. J. ROSE) states that divination »may be roughly divided into two kinds: (a) ‘automatic’ divination, in which an omen is looked for and interpreted, so to speak, in its own right, with no thought of appeal to any supernormal power, god, or spirit; and (b) divination proper, in the strict etymological sense of the word, which inquires of some sort of a deity, generally by means of signs con- ceived of as being sent by him.« But »of many cases it is hard to say which category they fall under«, so there are limitations in the use of this division. The proposed dichotomy seems also to be valid for Japan. There are methods to call down the gods and have them speak through the mouth of a human be- ing. -

Takagaki In the third month of 1868, the newly formed Meiji government announced its intention to return to the ritsuryo system of government that had been in place during the Nara and Heian periods. This was a system that held to the concept of unity between church and state (saisei itchi). Thus, the Jingikan, Office of (Shinto) Deities (often translated as Office of Kami Worship), was revived in that same month as one of seven departments in the Dajokan, the administrative organ of the state, and in an attempt to “purify” the tradition, a policy of separating Buddhism from Shinto (shinbutsu bunri-rei) was adopted.1 However, in July of 1869, the Jingikan was given the highest rank of all government offices, placing it above the Dajokan, and in the following year an Imperial Rescript on the Enshrinement of the Kami was issued, asserting that, along with various Shinto gods, all the emperors of Japan were to be worshiped as kami: Now that the imperial dignity has passed to Us, small and frail of form though we be, we are afraid both night and day that there will be some want in Our performance of the Imperial duties. We thereby enshrine with the Jingikan (The Office of Kami Worship), the kami of Heaven and Earth, together with the eight kami of Kamimusubi-no-kami, Takamimusubi-no-kami, Tamatsu-memusubi-no-kami, Ikumusubi-no-kami, Taramusubi-no-kami, Omiyame-no-kami, Miketsukami and Kotoshironushi-no-kami, and along with them, the souls of all past Emperors. -
Essence of Honesty in Ishida Baigan and Virtue of Integrity in Organizational Ethics

While the Japanese have respected honesty described as makoto in having absorbed Confucianism , their notion of honesty has been criticized by some researchers that it holds truthfulness as one behaves unselfishly and focuses sincerely on the subject he/she just faces, in practice, and it would tend to lack •ereason' to justify his/her behavior in taking social good into account . However, in this paper, I present his idea that the transparency in the spirit of his notion of honesty leads to the modern understanding of a virtue of integrity, which is a central topic of business ethics, by examining Baigan's thoughts seeking harmony (or wago) among people from all walks of life in pursuing their honest behavior, particularly based on the way he considered the honest figure of merchants. The background that the concept of his honesty included transparency is related to the fact that he never forgot to be conscious of societal harmony. Then I argue that Baigan's honesty reflects •ereason' to meet public interests, and, it holds the essence to consider in what ways a corporation should establish business ethics especially in considering stakeholders. Baigan's lessons indicate that , attaining transparency may become a moral principle relevant to integrity, which requires one to demonstrate his/her action. -

Abe discusses Yamaga Soko's (1622-85) emphasis on practical learning in historiography. Abe states that Soko esteemed Sima Qian's 6] .tI ~ (ca. 145-ca. 90 B.C.E.) remark, in his "Pre face" to the Shij i e. te.. (Records of the Grand Historian), assigning greater value to accounts of reality and practical matters than to those filled with empty words. In histori ography, Soko too preferred practicality rather than vacuous theorizing. Abe thus sees Soko as an "epoch-making figure" and "a pioneer" of realistic historical literature in Japan.
