But beyond that, I appreciated the book’s message that the road to happiness is to be true to yourself first.” - The FlyLeaf Review “An extremely adorkable read about being comfortable in your own skin. Get ready to bring out your inner nerd!” - Sara Book Nerd “THE SUMMER I BECAME A NERD is everything you want in an ideal summer; it’s fun and bright, with the perfect mix of romance and nerdiness. You’ll devour this book with as much enthusiasm as the main character devours the latest comic book.” - Alice in Readerland “A total feel good romance with plenty of laughs and smiles, and just the right amount of emotion.” - A Good Addiction “A sweet and fun summer read that turns the tables on the popular guy/nerdy girl scenario and refreshingly features a popular girl who wants to let her nerd flag fly. -

Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of The University of Texas at Austin in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts The University of Texas at Austin August 2014 Dedication In memory of Roger Cushing Jr., Madeline Cushing and Mary Lou Cavicchi, whose love, support, generosity, and encouragement led me to this place. Acknowledgements For her loving support, inspiration, and the endless conversations on the subject of Duchamp and Lautréamont that she endured, I would first like to thank my fiancée, Nicole Maloof. I would also like to thank my mother, Christine Favaloro, her husband, Joe Favaloro, and my stepfather, Leslie Cavicchi, for their confidence in me. To my advisor, Linda Dalrymple Henderson, I owe an immeasurable wealth of gratitude. Her encouragement, support, patience, and direction have been invaluable, and as a mentor she has been extraordinary. Moreover, it was in her seminar that this project began. I also offer my thanks to Richard Shiff and the other members of my thesis colloquium committee, John R. Clarke, Louis Waldman, and Alexandra Wettlaufer, for their suggestions and criticism. INDEX ORESTES AUGUSTUS BROWNSON ORESTES AUGUSTUS BROWNSON Some have attempted to allege that Thoreau’s encounter with the Reverend Orestes Augustus Brownson during his college years “transformed” David Henry Thoreau — that when he returned from the minister’s house in Canton, and the study of the German language, to his Cambridge dorm room, he was an entirely different young man. In evaluating that account of it, we can take into consideration that in Thoreau’s personal library was a copy of the Reverend’s first book, NEW V IEWS... (undoubtedly a gift of the Reverend — but we have no indication whatever that Thoreau ever so much as glanced at it), and that in the Reverend’s personal library was a copy of Thoreau’s A WEEK.. -
