Although it had a gay following for several decades during the 20th century, the bar came out and proud with its queer identity in 1986 and championed the modern age of homosexualist Soho. This weekend, the bar celebrates its 29th birthday as a gay venue. General Manager Neil Hodgson has been overseeing the shenanigans there since 1998 and knows every nook and cranny of its insides better than Katie Price’s gynaecologist knows hers. In commemoration of such a landmark venue, Neil shares some of the bar’s lesser know secrets…

Q We have 60 years of combined service between us within the Compton’s team.

QCompton’s , previously the Swiss Hotel, takes its name from the street that’s named after Bishop Compton, son of the Earl of Northampton, whose diocese this area encompassed.

QBehind Compton’s are buried 100,000 plague victims.

QCurrent landlord of 16 years, Neil Hodgson is the great nephew of playwright Noel Coward.

Q“SO HO” is a hunting call and this area was originally Henry Vlll’s hunting park.

QWe sell 11 tons of beer a week and 60 litres of vodka.

QIn 1942 the Landlord of the Swiss Hotel was warned by the metropolitan police not to allow sodomites or sodomy on the premises.

QThe Soho Club Lounge (upstairs bar) became a public space with the addition of the main staircase in 1996. &IJSVIXLEXMX[EWYWIHEWSJ½GIW

BATHHOUSE... © Ivan-Ek Continuing our series looking at the issues around gay shame and sexuality. This week: why are we still so hung up about hanging out in saunas?

By Patrick Cash

prevailing attitude amongst the younger gay generation toward the idea of gay saunas seems to be that they are patronised only by the old and lonely, those who look like Ursula’s poor, unfortunate souls. Enter a sauna and it’s a different story. 8LIVI´WE[LSPIWTIGXVYQSJ¾IWL both toned and not so toned, drifting in and out of the steam. And what a naughty A so-and-so you are, you big shameless saunas in the 1980s. It is true today that certainly all London and LYWW]WPETW[VMWX¾MVXEXMSYWP][MXL UK saunas appear to take protecting the sexual health of their towel in the steam room* clientele seriously. Hook-up apps have not hugely dented the saunas’ footfall, Free condom and lube packs are made available, and posters indicating that when it comes to sex, sometimes the real warning of the dangers of HIV and other STI infections can be seen TL]WMGEPMX]SJXLI¾IWLMWQSVIEXXVEGXMZIXLERERSXLIVMHIRXMOMX on the walls. Murray against lobbying for the closure of dating websites and applications we are bathed in have blossomed. Whilst we harbour desire for one another these facilitators helping us to have sex will always go on to exist, although their formats may change and evolve. So, perhaps we should embrace saunas as an integral part of our culture? When the silly soldier James Wharton claims that saunas should be shut down so that we gays can further assimilate; when the play John paints the steamroom as a place of lonely tragedy: both are recycling gay shame. Of course we’re not all sauna users, and we’re not all looking for NSA, but we can all celebrate the enjoyment and freedom of gay sex.

The film centres on school teacher Ernst Ostertag and cabaret singer Robi Rapp, who began their romance half a century ago, and were finally able to legally marry nearly 50 years later in 2003. They’re played by young actors Matthias Hungerbuhler and Sven Schelker in the film’s dramatic scenes, but it’s the segments that centre on the real Ernst and Robi that give the film its soulful kick. Writer-director Stefan Haupt’s film won both the prestigious Teddy Bear and Audience Award at last year’s Berlin Film Festival.

HUNDREDS OF HOMOS stampeded to the dancefloor last Saturday to watch our swag sister Charli XCX perform tidbits from tasty new album ‘Sucker’. The crowd didn’t care about being squashed together like a tin of sardines while the pop princess sung her renowned tune ‘Boom Clap’. The night was off to a banging start with her Iconic Pop debut ‘I Love It’, and I can honestly say, we were loving the bunny-backing dancers hopping excessively on stage. Our wonderful Charli gave us a taster of her newest tracks, which included, ‘Breaking the Rules’ and ‘Doing It’. The club reached boiling pint while being accompanied by her sexy entourage of cheerleaders and half-naked muscle studs. After a swift costume change, the nu pop princess strutted back on stage in a gold metallic number belting out her classic ‘I’m So Fancy’. Her saucy strippers joined her one last time for a sexy strip tease and slut drop! The purveyor of pop was handed a beautiful bouquet for a stunning and sensational performance. Overall, it was a pop-tastic and confetti-filled evening, which definitely satisfied all those cravings.

HAVING ALREADY gifted us with The Glory, a bar that’s proven to be just what the ordered for the East London scene, creative genius Jonny Woo is presenting us with another hot sensation in the form of Lipsync 1000! A new(ish) night for fabulous faux femmes and friends, to dazzle us with their ability to memorize and mouth long sequences of words set to music. Naturally, we were in the front row for opening night. Donning a leotard and prosthetic nose that left him looking like the bastard lovechild of Katie Hopkins and Rosanna Arquette, the wonderful Woo kicked things off with a hula-hooping rendition of Beyonce’s ‘Halo’ before introducing us to our judging panel, led by Princess Julia. Contestants vying for a chance to win the £1000 cash prize included Helen Earth asking us to smell her ‘Perfume’, Scarlett John Hansen giving us a, er, frenetic rendition of ‘Do What U Want’ & Miss Giving doing... something that involved a book. But it was Jonbenet Blonde who stole the show with a perfectly crafted copy of Catherine Zeta Jones’ Chicago show tune, ‘An Act of Desperation’. The applause following her superb slot was enough to crown her the clear winner, through to the final in ten weeks’ time. Lipsync 1000 will continue every Wednesday until the final in April. There’s still time to enter, so dig out your best wig and bloody well do it!

THIS SATURDAY we ventured north of the river for a night of girl power as the Black Cap and Buffalo Girls presented Spice World Live and Lady Lloyd’s Birthday Bonanza! Mile-long queues were running outside the ‘Cap as the North London crowd anxiously waited to join the ultimate Spice Girl ball! From Sporty to Ginger, the homos were dressed from head to heels as their favourite Spice Girls characters. DJ Tasty Tim and Lady Lloyd spiced up the night with the legendary 90s beats throwing in a slice of Vengaboys, Peter Andre and T-Spoons’ ‘Sex on the Beach’. Of course, this wouldn’t be a proper Spice Girl’s ball without the cheesiest tracks including, ‘Wannabe’ and ‘Say You'll Be There’. Our birthday girl Miss Lloyd took centre stage as toffee-nosed Posh, and was joined by Baga Chipz, Snow White Trash, Silver Summers and Raven Mandella. The sassy sisters owned the night with their crude jokes, great choreography and outstanding vocals. It was a fab half an hour of gurl power! The cherry on top of the night were the sentimental prizes given to the best dressed Spice Girl including a top of the range Baby Spice doll… with a detached head!

SO, MID-JANUARY, and not being among those weak bitches doing a Dry January (‘cause real lushes don’t need a break, especially not over the most depressing month of the year), we sauntered through Soho expecting some city abandonment scene, but not at Ku Bar. On what should have been a reasonably quiet night, they were dealing with a roadblock! Thankfully, QX queens don’t queue. Inside was just as rammed, we could barely see our fave host Nieko, let alone drag him away from the chaos for a tipple (or three). We’re still traumatised from squeezing through all the buff guys to get to the bar. But obviously we used it as an opportunity to unnecessarily grind upon a few guys on the way over, courtesy of Prince Persona on the decks. Been feeling cold? Trust us, Ku Klub is totally hot this winter.

Hi Dr Alex, I had some vaccinations to go travelling for my gap year and I had a medical for work that showed I was not immune VQ*GRCVKVKU$+FG¿PKVGN[JCFVJGHWNN course of three jabs. I’ve been reading online and this seems to suggest that I’m just one of the people who so not respond to the vaccination. I’m single and always have safe sex but I’d still like to be protected so is there anything I can do to help? Thanks Ed
