For more information, please contact [email protected], [email protected]. “I never did an evil thing”: AN EXamination of hittite sin and religious sensibility David Ferguson s early as 3000 b.c.e., a group of Indo-Europeans settled in what is now central Turkey.1 Speaking a language closer to English and German than Athe native languages of the inhabitants of that region, these people integrated into and adopted the diverse culture around them. They were the Hittites, who went on to establish a kingdom and then an empire.2 From ca. 1650–1180 b.c.e., the Hittites emerged as a major player in the world of the ancient Near East.3 In 1595 King Muršili I sent an army more than 800 miles away to sack distant Babylon,4 and later King Muwatalli II challenged Ramesses II of Egypt’s imperial expansion at the famous Battle of Kadesh in 1275.5 According to Ramesses III, the Hittite empire collapsed with the invasion of the Sea People around 1200 b.c.e.6 Remnants of the empire scattered, and some are mentioned in the Hebrew Bible among the groups in Canaan when the Israelites invaded.7 The title of this paper, “I Never Did an Evil Thing,” comes from a statement made by the Hittite king Hattušili III. -

After his accession, he abandoned the expansionist policy of his predecessor Trajan and focused on securing the frontiers of the empire and on maintaining its stability. Of the utmost importance was the further integration and participation in his program of the peoples of the Greek East, especially of the Greek mainland and Asia Minor. Hadrian now invited them to become active members of the empire. By his lengthy travels and benefactions to the people of the region and by the creation of the Panhellenion, Hadrian attempted to create a second center of the Empire. Rome, in the West, was the first center; now a second one, in the East, would draw together the Greek people on both sides of the Aegean Sea. Thus he could accelerate the unification of the empire by focusing on its two most important elements, Romans and Greeks. Hadrian channeled his intentions in a number of ways, including the use of specific iconographical types on the coinage of his reign and religious language and themes in his interactions with the Greeks. In both cases it becomes evident that the Greeks not only understood his messages, but they also reacted in a positive way. -

CE in context of witness of other ancient geographers. Their re- vised etymological analyses lead to the conclusion that at least three of them are of Ger- manic origin, but probably calques on their probable Baltic counterparts. A PSYCHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF THE GIFT OF SPEAKING IN TONGUES IN THE PENTECOSTAL CHURCHES IN BOTswaNA James N Amanze and Tino Shanduka Department of Theology and Religious Studies, Faculty of Humanities, University of Botswana [email protected] ABSTRACT Glossolalia is a very important element in the life of Pentecostal Churches and is at the centre of their spirituality. This paper examines the gift of speaking in tongues from a psychological perspective in order to find out what psychologists say about this very important gift of the Holy Spirit. The paper begins by looking at the history of speaking in tongues in the Church from the day of Pentecost and how it has become the symbol of God’s presence in the life of believers in Pentecostal Churches in Botswana today. The paper interrogates glossolalia on whether it is divine language or human language spoken by people who are emotionally charged. This research was undertaken in order to understand glossolalia better, since it is a contested area not only among Christians but also in other world religions where this phenomenon is widely manifested. The present work shows that while theologians are justified to consider glossolalia as divine language, there are indications that in some instances speaking in tongues can be a result of anxiety and human attempts to prove that the Holy Spirit is truly present in one’s spiritual life. This conclusion has been reached especially in cases where it has been found that glossolalia is a learned language. Today, these inscriptions con- stitute elements essential to our understanding and knowledge of ancient society. On the one hand, the everyday, ordinary aspect of these texts gives us a less idealized picture of the classical world; on the other hand, the materiality of the medium makes distant antiquity more real, more accessible. The discovery of new epigraphic evidence is always exciting, and gives scholars an opportunity to display their skill in deciphering. In antiquity, finding and re-using inscriptions, whether genuine or forged, played an important role in shaping and understanding the world: then as today, the reinterpretation of ancient inscribed texts allowed a reconstruction of the past, which was then employed as a way to manage the present. Poets, historians, and antiquarians quoted and discussed inscriptions, in both Greek and Latin, with a whole range of motives.1 This paper examines the circumstances in which inscriptions were discovered both in pagan and Christian antiquity and focuses on the ways they were used in the legitimation of new cults. 1 See the contributions of Higbie 1999; Tronson 2000; Boardman 2002 (index sv ‘inscriptions’); Haake 2004; Zizza 2006; Pownall 2008. -

Notations on the Commentary on the Song of Songs by Gregory of Nyssa (one of two) Introduction This document is the second of a three part series which consists in examining the three commentaries on the Song of Songs by Origen, Gregory of Nyssa and Bernard of Clairvaux. The first is completed and posted on the Lectio Divina Homepage under the title Notations on the Commentary on the Song of Songs by Origen. A third document will follow the current one and will be entitled Notations on the Commentary on the Song of Songs by Bernard of Clairvaux. Gregory’s Commentary on the Song of Songs consists of a Prologue and fifteen homilies, the same format used in these notations. Except for the Prologue, the notations are preceded by verses from the Song of Songs, the subject matter on which Gregory of Nyssa comments. These verses are included in order to put the notations in better context. As for the key sentences lifted from the Commentary itself, they are listed in accord with the critical edition of the Greek text (Gregorii Nysseni in Canticum Canticorum edited by Hermann Langerbeck, Leiden, 1960). The first numeral represents the page and the second numeral represents the line within that page. This enables the reader to access quickly a given word either by a forward or backward search. Obviously the references become increasingly common as the document progresses; towards the beginning it is employed seldom because the words are new. After the posting of excerpts from Gregory of Nyssa’s Commentary and before the paragraph consisting of notations there is inserted a string of the transliterated Greek words (all in italics) from the excerpt just cited including any preposition that has been noted. -
