The Devil’s Advocate - Reading Blixen in the Light of Kierkegaard Foreword This thesis falls into the category of an article Ph.D. This means that it consists of three articles and a background section. At the time of writing1 the first article “Flappers and Macabre Dandies. Karen Blixen’s ‘Carnival’ in the Light of Søren Kierkegaard” has been published in the journal Scandinavica (2:2011), the second “‘Ehrengard,’ Kierkegaard, and the Secret Note” has been accepted by the journal Scandinavian Studies and is scheduled to appear in the winter 2013 issue and the third “Karen Blixen’s ‘The Poet’ and Søren Kierkegaard’s Gjentagelsen” has been submitted to the European Journal of Scandinavian Studies but has not yet been peer reviewed.2 The three articles are framed by a background section that consists of 1) a research survey of the Blixen-Kierkegaard research scholarship, 2) reflections over the theory and method used in each of the three articles and 3) additional analyses of selected tales by Blixen with particular attention to Kierkegaard and the topics of gender and Christianity and finally 4) a concluding chapter that ties the observations from the articles and the background section together. This means that the form of the thesis is more similar to that of a monograph, but as the thesis unfolds it should be clear, why this format has been necessary in order to supplement and develop the observations made in the articles and make a final conclusion about Blixen and Kierkegaard that takes both articles and the additional analyses into account. The downfall is, however, that it has been impossible to avoid the re-use of quotes and ideas presented in the articles in the background section, which is causing some redundancy. I hope it will not disturb the reading too much. All Kierkegaard quotations are from the online version of Søren Kierkegaards Skrifter: www.sks.dk. In the background section the references to Kierkegaard’s works will not have any page references (n. pag.) since the works are online and do not have page numbers. All Kierkegaard quotes can, however, easily be checked in the online version by pasting text from the quotes into the search box on the 1 August 20, 2013. 2 All these journals belong to the highest ranked academic category (category 2) according to the latest Danish ranking list: ”Autoritetslisten for serier 2012 og 2013”: http://fivu.dk/forskning-og- innovation/statistik-og-analyser/den-bibliometriske-forskningsindikator/autoritetslister 1 website. With regard to Blixen, I have decided to use the Danish versions of her works in the background section following the observations made by Poul Behrendt about the English and Danish versions with regard to Vinter-Eventyr (1942). Behrendt shows that Blixen in her Danish reworkings of the tales developed ideas from the English texts and added or reinforced allusions to Danish writers from the 19th century in order to cater to her Danish audience (Behrendt 2010a, 406). This also pertains to allusions to Søren Kierkegaard, as I show in the third article about “The Poet” from Seven Gothic Tales (1934) / “Digteren” from Syv fantastiske Fortællinger (1935), but in the first two articles about “Carnival” and “Ehrengard” I only use the English versions since Blixen never had a chance to translate and rework the tales into Danish herself (it was done posthumously by Clara Selborn in 1963 and 1975). Even though this background section is written in English, none of the Danish quotes from Kierkegaard or Blixen’s works (including the letters) are translated into English,3 since I presuppose that the review committee and other readers on this academic level are able to read and understand Danish, but also in order to not exceed the maximum limit of 100.000 words. If the italics in the quotes are mine, I will note it in the parenthesis after the quote as “author’s italics,” otherwise the italics are original. When I refer to my own articles in the thesis I use the page number of the article as it was submitted to (or printed by) the journal (see page numbers to the left or right), but I have also numbered the articles with a second page number (in the middle of the page), so each page also fits the running text of the thesis in its final form. The articles each follow the specific formatting style of the journal it was submitted to, but in the background section I have chosen to use the Chicago Manual of Style as the reference format. This thesis consists of about 85.000 words (without the works cited list); the three articles account for approximately 36.000 words and the background section for the rest. The English part of thesis is followed by a one-page summary in Danish. 3 In the three articles the Danish quotes are, however, followed by English translations due to the requirements of the journals. 2 Thanks Many people have been helpful and supportive throughout the five years it has taken to complete this work. Andersen, Karen Blixen and Beyond Kirstine Marie Kastbjerg Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor in Danish Studies Marianne Stecher Department of Scandinavian Studies Despite growing ubiquitous in both the popular and academic mind in recent years, the Gothic has, perhaps not surprisingly, yet to be examined within the notoriously realism-prone literary canon of Denmark. This dissertation fills that void by demonstrating an ongoing negotiation of Gothic conventions in select works by canonical Danish writers such as B.S. Ingemann, Hans Christian Andersen, and Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen), as well as contemporary writers such as Peter Høeg and Leonora Christina Skov. This examination does not only broaden our understanding of these culturally significant writers and the discourses they write within and against, it also adds to our understanding of the Gothic – an infamously malleable and indefinable literary mode – by redirecting attention to a central feature of the Gothic that has not received much critical attention: the emphasis on excess, spectacle, clichéd conventions, histrionic performances, its hyperbolic rhetorical style, and hyper-visual theatricality.

Sørensen* Abstract It is curious that practically no critic nor reviewer in either America or England or Denmark has pointed out the humor in the works of the Danish storyteller Karen Blixen / Isak Dinesen. Not least because she actually wanted to be perceived as a humorist herself. In this paper I intend to demonstrate the humor in her tales as a combination of the small and the great humor, using a concept pair introduced by the Danish philosopher Harald Høffding––and with references also to Søren Kierkegaard. The great humor is an overall view of life, while the small humor is fun – also in the sense of oblique angles and norm-breaking views. Key Words: Blixen, great and small humor, irony, audacity, view of life, secularization, distance, Kierkegaard, Arendt Eugene Walter asks the Danish author Karen Blixen / Isak Dinesen about the comic spirit in her tales. “Isak Dinesen: Oh, I’m glad you mentioned that! I do often intend a comic sense, I love a joke, I love the humorous. The name “Isak” means “laughter.” I often think that what we most need now is a great humorist.”1 In 1931, after 17 years as a farmer or colonialist in Kenya, Blixen returned to her childhood home, Rungstedlund, some 30 kilometers north of Copenhagen. Here she dedicated herself to writing stories. In 1934, when she was 40 years old, her Seven Gothic Tales was published in the USA. It was immediately a big success.

Apr. 2020 ejss 2014; 44(2): 165–185 Mads Bunch Karen Blixen’s “The Poet” and Søren Kierkegaard’s Gjentagelsen Abstract: It is commonly acknowledged within Karen Blixen scholarship that some of Blixen’s tales are literary responses to other works from world litera- ture. In this paper I will argue that the tale “The Poet” from Seven Gothic Tales (1934) should be included in this line-up of responses as a literary response to Søren Kierkegaard’s Gjentagelsen (Repetition) from 1843. Through juxtapositions of quotes and analysis of plot development and character constellations, I will show how Blixen redevelops the plot and reverses the characters from Kierke- gaard’s Gjentagelsen. I will pay particular attention to a reoccurring character in Kierkegaard’s production: the elderly bachelor esthete (Constantin Constan- tius), whom Blixen in “The Poet” exposes as a demonic, yet comical character. I will conclude by pointing out that repetition should be acknowledged as an integral part of Blixen’s poetics, since she consistently repeats archetypal plots and characters from world literature in her works that at the same time are completely new and original, following the dialectics of repetition.

Aber da es auch abends und nachts noch schön ist, haben wir un- serem Heft diesmal einen dunklen Farbton gegeben, sodass Ihr es Euch damit auch im herbstlichen Park, der Bar oder zu Hause auf dem Sofa oder dem Bett gemütlich machen könnt, ohne dass Ihr unter dem grauen Himmel auffallt. Vielleicht wundert Ihr euch, wieder etwas von uns zu hören, doch obwohl un- sere Anschubfinanzierung durch die Ernst-Reuter-Gesellschaft mit dem letzten Heft endete, sind wir immer noch da. Der Dank dafür gilt den Instituten für Allgemeine und Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaften, Kunstgeschichte und Germanistik der Freien Universität Berlin und dem Bücherbasar e.V., die mit ihrer freundlichen finan- ziellen Unterstützung den Druck dieser Ausgabe ermöglicht haben. Dadurch könnt ihr auch in diesem Sommer einen Einblick in die Arbeit Eurer KommilitonInnen erhalten, und dafür geben wir Euch wieder eine Auswahl herausragender Texte aus dem weiten Feld der Geisteswissenschaften. Damit nicht genug – erstmals geben wir unserem Heft eine neue Ausrichtung und suchen unsere Beiträge jetzt auch bei den Geschichts- und Kulturwissenschaf- ten. Die Antworten auf unseren call-for-notes aus diesem Fachbereich blieben lei- der noch recht vereinzelt, aber aller Anfang ist schwer. Wenn Ihr also dieses Heft in Händen haltet und Euch die eine oder andere eigene Hausarbeit in den Sinn kommt, oder aber wenn Ihr nach der Lektüre Lust bekommen habt, an der nächsten Ausgabe mitzuwirken, schreibt uns einfach eine Mail – wir freuen uns über jede Einsendung, die unser nächstes Heft bereichern und über jeden interessierten Helfer.

    HISTORY OF THE KAREN BLIXEN COFFEE GARDEN & COTTAGES LTD. BY DR. BONNIE DUNBAR The Historic Swedo House was built around 1908 by the Swedo-African Coffee Company. Dr. Dunbar purchased the property and re- stored the old house in 1999. The Historic Swedo-House is a typical example of the architecture that existed during the pio- neering days of Kenya. It was built raised on stilts (still in place today with re-enforcement) which were to protect the building from water and termite damage. From “Letters From Africa The house was smaller than it is today, and consisted of 3 rooms and a veranda with a kitchen some yards away. It had corrugated iron walls lined with wood inside and a railed veranda and arched roof . In later years the walls outside “Swedo House” were “modernized” by removing the corrugated iron and replacing it with cement plastered over chicken wire. Inside the walls were paneled with Hessian which was painted with a thin layer of cement and finally white washed. The “prefabricated” slotted wood walls were imported from Europe sometime before the 1920s.The original colored lead windows remain intact today as they are shown with the original settlers. Anecdotal information from a neighbor (Mr. Russel) in Ka- ren is that his father built his house in 1908 and he knew that the Swedo house was two years older. (That house is no longer standing) It is told that United States President Theodore Roosevelt who was hosted by Sir Northrup McMillan hunted out of the Swedo House dur- ing his famous visit to Kenya in 1908 to collect specimens for the National Museums in Ameri- ca.

    Min Karen Blixen-samling og et praktisk problem Af K.F.Plesner Egentlig totalsamler af nogen enkelt forfatter har jeg aldrig været. Ikke engang af Baggesen. Sa skulle det snarere være af Johannes Smith, fordi vi for en menneskealder siden blev enige om for alle tilfældes skyld at udstationere et eksemplar af hvad vi skrev hos hinanden. Derimod har jeg af ikke så få forfattere nogenlunde fuld­ stændige rækker af originaludgaver — og, som jeg har sagt før: original er enhver udgave som bringer en ny, ændret eller øget text, fra senere optryk kan man roligt se bort, medmindre de skulle rumme et videnskabeligt noteapparat, som jo i så fald er originalt. En totalsamler af Karen Blixen måtte vel til at begynde med sla fast, at hun hører til en skrivende familie. Udgangspunktet måtte da blive hendes bedstefar A. W. Dinesens sjældne lille bog Abd-el-Kader, 1840, om krigen i Algier, hvori han deltog som frivillig. Dernæst hendes far Wilhelm Dinesen, af hvem man foruden de to samlinger Jagtbreve, 1889, og Nye Jagt­ breve, 1892, helst i de kønne, grønne komponerede shirtings­ bind, ikke blot skulle have bogen om kampen om Dybbøl, Fra ottende Brigade, 1889, og om hans deltagelse i den fransk­ tyske krig, Paris under Gommunen, 1872, men også de to udsnit fra Tilskueren 1887 om hans Ophold i De forenede Stater. Af hendes bror Thomas Dinesen er der både hans skildringer fra første verdenskrig No Man's Land, 1928, og hans egne uhyggelige og fantastiske fortællinger Syrenbusken, 1966 213 K. F. PLESNER 1952.
