Abstract It’s unfortunate that even a single defective of a coffee bean can contribute to affect the receptive-lot of coffee. Coffee parchments or beans with high quality fetches high price in the world market. The study aimed at assessing the quality of coffee parchments along the post-harvest stages. Main focus was on improvement of post-harvest practices for coffee quality of coffee from farm level and to the processing under supervision of primary societies. The study involved coffee farmers in 6 Agricultural Marketing and Cooperatives Societies (AMCOS). Questionnaire, check list tools and physical observation were used for data collection. -

INTRODUCTION The aim of the low flow study is to provide the best possible estimates I of the 10-year minimum flows at the selected sources of the village water supply schemes. Such estimates will form the basis for the final I design of the individual water supplies and for additional source I investigations where selected sources do not have sufficient yields. The low flow measurement programme was conducted during the months of September, October and November 1984. Two measurements were made at I most of the selected sites with approximately one month lag-time between them. -

FERTILITY LEVELS AND PATTERNS AMONG HIV-INFECTED AND UN-INFECTED WOMEN IN KYELA DISTRICT A CASE STUDY FROM TANZANIA. 1.0. Introduction The fertility transition, seen in many parts of the world, has been slow to start in Sub-Saharan Africa, although recent evidence suggests a moderate of fertility in few countries (UNAIDS, 2003). It is not clear how the HIV epidemic will alter future levels of fertility and what impact it will have on the nature of fertility transition. The contribution of HIV/AIDS to the fertility transition is not currently evident due to the fact that. For four reasons. First, isolating the factor of HIV/AIDS from other factors of fertility is a complex process because it is not a proximate variable, but one of the contributors to several proximate determinants of fertility. Secondly, for the impact of the epidemic to be felt, the prevalence has to be high in the region of 20 percent and be sustainable for a long time, about a decade or longer. Thirdly, behavior factors may reduce fertility of women with symptoms of AIDS, but not those asymptomatic. Fourthly, as infant mortality increases, the need to replace dead children and produce more to ensure survival of some will challenge implementation of family planning programmes in Sub-Saharan Africa and perhaps increase fertility. Also, increasing HIV prevalence in the region will mean that HIV/AIDS programmes will compete for resources with family planning progrmmes, which would weaken the latter (UNAIDS, 2003). Recent studies in Sub Saharan Africa have shown that fertility is reduced among HIV infected women compare with uninfected women. -

Stakeholder shall be called upon to cooperate in the implementation of the District’s Strategic Plan. Therefore Government, Development Partners and Community are urged to give their maximum contribution and support according to their commitments in order to facilitate execution of the Council Medium Term Strategic Plan. THE CONTRIBUTION OF FOREST PRODUCTS TO RURAL LIVELIHOODS IN NKASI DISTRICT, RUKWA, TANZANIA BY ANSBERT SEVERIN RWAMAHE A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF SCIENCE IN MANAGEMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES FOR SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE OF SOKOINE UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE, MOROGORO, TANZANIA. 2008 i ABSTRACT This study was conducted in Nkasi District, Rukwa region, Tanzania, with the overall objective of assessing the contribution of forest resources in improving the livelihoods of rural communities. The focus was on various ways in which local communities in the study area earn income through forest resources. Similarly, the study focused on the types and quantities of the forest products and establishment of the contribution of the products to household income. Primary data were collected from household survey in the study area by using questionnaire, PRA techniques and check list for key informants. Data collected during PRA were analysed with the help of local community. Content and structural- functional analysis techniques were applied for qualitative data and information. The quantitative data were analyzed by using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) programme. The secondary data were obtained from the District Natural Resources Office. The results show that indigenous forests provide various types of forest products with substantial contribution to the livelihoods of the household. The forest products comprise about 21% of the total annual household cash income. Likewise, the study quantified the annually utilized forest products per household to be around TAS 186 815. The study also identified endangered plant species orchids which is widely traded and consumed by about 63% of the sampled households. -

While this volume of A-zania was in press, we discovered that, as a result of some unexplained com munication problem, another version of this paper had appeared in Tanzania Notes and Records, 88/89 {for 1982), pp, 15-32 , At this late staJ!e and in view of various editorial amendments and reduction aJ!reed with the authors when the note was offered to Azania and accepted in JIOOd faith, we have decided not to delete it from our proofs. We are happy to have the aJ!ret~ment of the editors ofTNR to this. Normally, however, we would not carry an article or note already published or accepted elsewhere. The TNR version will be valuable to a number of readers for its illustration of stone artefacts. In 1976 we undertook an archaeological survey of portions of lleje, Kyela, Mbeya, Mbozi and Tukuyu Districts of Mbeya Region in southern Tanzania. As no formal archaeological reconnaissance of the region had previously been undertaken, our intention was to establish the general outlines of prehistoric occupation of the area. -
