i3419_illinoiswomen'sconference_d1r1.indd 1 4/17/2015 10:17:53 AM Welcome from the Illinois Diversity Council

Terri Mayes Regional Vice President National Diversity Council Welcome to the 6th annual Women’s Conference. I am beyond thrilled to have you here.

In contrast to perceptions about women in the workplace, this conference and the caliber of the speakers and participants is real evidence that women can and do have the potential to collectively lift each other up.

Girls compete with one another – Women empower and lift each other up! If, as the conference theme says, women are going to be true influencers of change, it has to start with how we treat each other, how we speak to and about each other, and how we bring the next generation of women along behind us. It is our responsibility.

My first introduction to the Illinois Diversity Council was learning that I was going to be recognized at the 2012 Women’s Conference. I was shy about saying anything to anyone at first, I was pretty sure it was a mistake. Me? But then I shared the details with a couple of key people at work and it felt….GOOD. What can I say? I am human and to be recognized for years of hard work, achieving positive business results, challenging myself in non-traditional roles, building strong teams, and enabling others to grow in their own career is recognition that a person appreciates. You will see today that it is fantastic to spend a day in a room of around 250 leaders from the area that are movers and shakers and to feel their energy and gain wisdom and insights through mutual sharing and benchmarking during the sessions and as you network.

I was so hooked by the experience that as of this year I joined the team officially. I am excited about driving the efforts in 2015 and mobilizing the membership and volunteers through our monthly educational meetings as well as our large conferences, by sharing information through corporate membership webinars twice monthly, and through consulting services to help companies achieve their own diversity and inclusion goals. I look forward to reporting to our membership at the end of 2015 on the measurable achievements the council has accomplished.

Thank you for this opportunity to serve the Illinois business community and for attending the 2015 Illinois Women’s Conference.
