GARY KUBIAK HEAD COACH – 22nd NFL Season (12th with Broncos) Gary Kubiak, a 23-year coaching veteran and three-time Super Bowl champion, enters his third decade with the Denver Broncos after being named the 15th head coach in club history on Jan. 19, 2015. A backup quarterback for nine seasons (1983-91) with the Broncos and an offensive coordinator for 11 years (1995- 2005) with the club, Kubiak returns to Denver after spending eight years (2006-13) as head coach of the Houston Texans and one season (2014) as offensive coordinator with the Baltimore Ravens. During 21 seasons working in the NFL, Kubiak has coached 30 players to a total of 57 Pro Bowl selections. He has appeared in eight conference championship games and six Super Bowls as a player or coach and was part of three World Championship staffs (S.F., 1994; Den., 1997-98) as a quarterbacks coach or offensive coordinator. In his most recent position as Baltimore’s offensive coordinator in 2014, he oversaw one of the NFL’s most improved and explosive units to help the Ravens advance to the AFC Divisional Playoffs. His offense posted the third-largest overall improvement (+57.5 ypg) in the NFL from the previous season and posted nearly 50 percent more big plays (74 plays of 20+yards) from the year before he arrived. Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco recorded career highs in passing yards (3,986) and touchdown passes (27) under Kubiak’s guidance while running back Justin Forsett ranked fifth in the league in rushing (1,266 yds.) to earn his first career Pro Bowl selection.

Led by quarterback Cam Newton, the Carolina Panthers look to win their first Super Bowl in franchise history in their second appearance in the big game; their first was in a loss against the New England Patriots back in 2004 in Super Bowl XXXVIII. This season, the Panthers accumulated 15 wins with just 1 SUPER BOWL 50: loss in the regular season, a feat only four other teams have accomplished in history. They defeated the Seattle Seahawks in the Divisional Round 31-24; however, they blew a 31-0 lead, which caused much concern and skepticism as to whether or not the nearly undefeated team was championship caliber. Leadership Is a Choice
The 1983 NFL draft is referred to as “the year of the quarterback” and is considered one of the strongest drafts in NFL history. The Denver Broncos had thirteen rookies make their team that year including me and their choice at quarterback Gary Kubiak. Gary was a ninth round pick out of Texas A&M but the Broncos expected him to challenge Mark Herman for the backup role and eventually replace Steve Deberg as the starter. Gary had been a three sport high school star in Texas and had put together an outstanding football career as an Aggie. Athletic and smart Kubiak was going to be the Bronco’s future quarterback. Kubiak came to Denver in June with the rest of us rookies to work out at the team facility, get to know his future teammates, and prepare for training camp. In July the Bronco’s brought rookies and a few nonstarter veterans to rookie camp. This was the week before the veterans joined them in Greeley and reported to training camp. Gary was a star at rookie camp with his accurate passes and his quick mastery of Dan Reeves offensive system. Then to Gary’s’ surprise the Bronco’s pulled off one of the NFLs biggest steals in history. They traded quarterback Mark Herrman and their 1983 first round pick Chris Hinton to the Baltimore Colts for the first pick of the 1983 draft, future Hall of Famer John Elway. To Gary’s credit he competed with John instead of pouting. When it became clear that John would be the Bronco’s franchise quarterback Gary realized that he could still be a leader on our team.

Manning to the PFHOF: Remembering our favorite moments of Peyton’s Hall-of- Fame career Today’s blast-from-the-past regarding Peyton F-ing Manning has only been in the archives a few months as it was our staff tribute to Manning when he was officially named in February to the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2021. But it highlights so many great memories as well as personal stories about what Manning’s time in Denver meant to us as bloggers who had the extreme privilege of writing about one of the Greatest Of All Time. On the day before Manning will give his Hall-of-Fame speech, no doubt acknowledging so many for what he was able to accomplish, it’s only appropriate we emphasize again what a joy it was to watch him not just play for but truly embrace being the quarterback of the Denver Broncos. ‘Peyton F-ing Manning’ Feb. 6, 2021 – Peyton Manning is going to officially be named a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2021 tonight. And because it feels like we’ve written the story of his contributions to the Broncos and the NFL multiple times already, we decided to talk about his contributions to our personal fandom. All of us writing for Mile High Report were Broncos fans long before The Sheriff came to town, but all of us still became even more emotionally invested in this team during his time here. Many members on this site probably joined the bandwagon when Manning came to town – a completely legit reason to become a fan of this team.
