COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT POLICY JAMES J. LUNSFORD (HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY) LAW LIBRARY Introduction Library Mission Statement The Mission of the Law Library is to collect, maintain and make available legal research materials in print and electronic format not generally obtainable elsewhere in the County for use by the Bench, Bar, students and all Hillsborough County citizens. Definitions “Librarian” means the Senior Librarian of the James J. Lunsford (Hillsborough County) Law Library. “Library” means the James J. Lunsford (Hillsborough County) Law Library or its staff. “Material” or “Materials” means legal or law-related information or resources, regardless of format. For example, subscription databases are “materials.” “Policy” means this Collection Development Policy. Purpose of the Policy The purpose of this Policy is to guide the Library in the selection, acquisition and retention of materials for the Library and to serve as a plan for the overall development of the collection. The Policy establishes priorities in collection, supplementation and retention. The Library’s acquisitions policies are based on the needs of the Library as well as the needs of the community it serves. This Policy must grow and change to meet the needs of the Library and its patrons. Accordingly, this Policy will be reviewed and revised as new resources and technologies become available and old ones disappear, and as the needs of the Library and its patrons demand. Collection Development Principles Responsibility for Selection The Librarian in consultation with the other Library staff, is responsible for the review and selection of materials for purchase. The Librarian will abide by the criteria stated in these guidelines. -

In many cases, the shared or similar missions of the institutions reviewed make them ideal partners in collaborative ventures. Different types of collaborative projects are examined, including exhibits, community programs, digital resources and joint-use facilities. Examples come from Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom (UK), as well as from Russia, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Italy, Spain, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. -

DIRECTOR’S REPORT June 17, 2021 Strategic Plan Our Mission: We are “The People’s University,” the center of learning for a diverse and inclusive community. Our Strategic Priorities: 1. Form communities of learning 2. Fight community deficits 3. Ready for the future: CPL 150 4. Cultivate a global perspective 5. Innovate for efficient and sustainable operations PUBLIC SERVICES MAIN LIBRARY SERVICES DURING COVID-19 Due to the public health threat of COVID-19, face coverings and social distancing continue to be required for Library patrons. In addition, time and capacity limits remain in place for TechCentral and branches. PROGRAMS, SERVICES AND EXHIBITS Literature and Ohio Center for the Book Manager Don Boozer hosted a conversation with Derf Backderf on his graphic novel Kent State on May 3rd. The live event and recording have been viewed 68 times. Popular Librarian Judy Daniels and Library Assistant Ricardo Jackson assembled hot lists for books and DVDs for patrons to place holds. Center for Local and Global History Library Assistant Danilo Milich created a May book display, It Is Time to Travel the USA. The display includes travel guides for USA, National Parks, and Civil War sites. Books by Mail Programs Words on Wheels staff mailed out 21 packages containing 36 items to 11 patrons as of May 17th. Homebound Services sent 181 packages to 170 patrons during the month of April. Covid-19 Home Test Distribution Lending Department staff have distributed 343 BinaxNOW COVID-19 Home Test Kits to patrons as of May 18, 2021 at the Main Library Drive—Up Window. -

Collection Policy
COLLECTION POLICY Collecting is at the heart of the Witte Museum’s mission and must be done with clear purpose and well-articulated guidelines. The museum’s Collection Plan provides the guidelines for what the museum will collect. The Collection Policy sets forth the professional standards and responsibilities for the care and management of collections as required of an accredited museum. The Collections Department Procedures Manual covers procedures for implementing this policy. This policy should be reviewed every five years or as necessary to reflect changes in staff, strategic plan, Collection Plan, or museum practices at large. I. MISSION Statement The Witte Museum promotes lifelong learning through innovative exhibitions, programs, and collections in natural history, science, and South Texas heritage II. VISION STATEMENT Through innovative programs in history, science, and culture the Witte Museum enriches lives, promotes a quality of life for all South Texas people and generates a legacy of knowledge. III. VALUES Learning organization Collection Stewardship Quality programs and exhibitions Fiscal stability Environmental stewardship Professional ethic Welcoming environment Approved 09/20/2017 1 IV. TYPES OF COLLECTIONS The Witte Museum possesses five types of collections: Accessioned, Library, Research, Living, and Educational. The Witte shall designate at the time of acquisition the collection category to which material is assigned. The assigned category may change as the priorities and collections of the Witte evolve. Accessioned Collections Items in the Accessioned Collections shall relate directly to the Mission Statement of the Witte and shall be used solely for exhibitions, research, publications, exhibition loans, education, and Witte branding and merchandising. The documentation, care and disposition of accessioned items are governed by this policy and museum best practices. -

University libraries all over the world still acquire and maintain massive book collections while managing other formats. Despite prophecies of vanishing print collections and emergence of the digital paradigm, printed books still have a central role in library collections and publishing industry (Kanwal 2005; Carr 2007) Until 2005, collections in Pakistan's university libraries (UL) mainly consisted of books (foreign), when the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan provided access to thousands of digital databases (Government of Pakistan. Higher Education Commission). A doctoral study found that in Pakistan, university libraries annual collection funds are mostly spent on new books and serial publications (Ameen 2005a). These funds have increased each year under the present regime; however, the book market has never been capable of efficiently supplying the imported current and research material for libraries. -

Our first thanks go to volunteers nearing retirement who completed a preliminary survey about what kinds of collections, samples, and materials they had in their possession that needed to be curated. They helped us assess what topics might best be covered in this guide. Once we started the process of compiling sections and full drafts, we had the good fortune to receive editorial comments, suggestions, and thoughtful reactions from our colleagues on the SAA Committee on Museums, Collections, and Curation. This policy and the minimum requirements are intended to apply to all faculties, schools, institutes, centres and departments of the University, and to all Cultural Collections owned and managed by the University now and in the future. 2 Definition Each of the Cultural Collections owned by the University of Melbourne is an assemblage of physical (not digital or virtual) objects,4 which have historic, aesthetic, scientific, research, technical, social or spiritual significance. This significance goes beyond the collection’s role as an intellectual resource or carrier of information or evidence. The objects in a Cultural Collection may be naturally occurring or created by humans and can include living organisms. Although each individual object might not be rare or unique, each collection as a totality is unique and irreplaceable; if lost or destroyed, the collection may not be able to be re-created, regardless of available funding. -

Issues in Law Library Acquisitions: An Analysis* Kent Milunovich** Mr. Milunovich explores issues and trends in the field of acquisitions by reviewing selected library literature and placing it in the context of law libraries. 1 Although journals in the field of librarianship often include articles pertaining to acquisitions, they usually are geared to a broad audience and rarely tailored specifically to law libraries. Some of these articles, however, provide information that is germane to law librarians who work in acquisitions. The purpose of this article is to consider the best of recent writing about acquisitions against the con- text of law libraries. Where appropriate, distinctions are drawn between acquisi- tions in academic and nonacademic law libraries. The topics discussed include shrinking acquisitions resources, changes in legal publishing, building and man- aging an acquisitions program, preservation, outsourcing, gifts, and the Internet. Shrinking Acquisitions Resources 2 Many law libraries have experienced a shrinkage in acquisitions resources in recent years.
