The similarity between ‘Sengol’ and ‘Sarkar’ was affirmed by the South Indian Film Writers Association. The Madras High Court rejected the writer’s petition to stay the release of the film, but issued a notice to Sun Pictures, the producer of the Sarkar. However, it has been reported that an out-of-court settlement has been made with the writer. ‘Thugs of Hindostan’ Leaked Hours After Release The action-adventure film ‘Thugs of Hindostan’, was found online just hours after its release on on November 8th 2018. Despite earning Rs. 52 crore on the opening day, the entire film has been leaked online by the piracy website TamilRockers, in all three languages in which it was released – Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, reportedly in HD print. TamilRockers was also behind the leaks of other recent releases, including Sarkar and Vada Chennai. The Tamil Film Producers’ Council (TFPC) has urged theatres to ensure that films were not recorded on mobile phones or cameras. INTERNATIONAL COPYRIGHT NEWS UPDATE China Bans More Than 6,000 Karaoke Songs The state-sponsored China Audio-Video Copyright Association (CAVCA) recently ordered KTV karaoke businesses to remove over 6600 songs from their karaoke offerings. CAVCA manages audio- visual content in China with the approval of the National Copyright Administration of China (NCAC), and has been cracking down on copyright violations more strictly for the last few years. Over the past few months alone, it has dealt with thousands of cases of alleged copyright infringement for businesses registered as karaoke venues in the past year. The banned songs include titles from popular Hong Kong and Taiwanese artists, well known songs from the 1990s and early 2000s which were mostly cover or alternate versions. CAVCA holds the management rights to over 90 percent of KTV songs in China and KTV operators are expected to obtain the collective’s authorization before being allowed to use them. However, it does not hold management rights to all the songs it has banned, and appears to have issued the order to avoid multiple suits by individual copyright holders. Rihanna Sends Notice to Trump for Unauthorised Use of Music Rihanna is the latest among the list of artists unhappy with US President Donald Trump for using their music in his rallies. Her attorneys have sent a cease-and desist notice to Trump’s White House Counsel for using her popular song “Don’t Stop the Music” at a recent rally. Prior to taking legal action, Rihanna protested Trump’s use of her music on Twitter. She closely follows Pharrell Williams, whose attorney served a cease and desist notice to President Trump, after the latter played his song, ‘Happy’ at one of his rallies. The list comprises artists like Adele, Queen, The O’Jays and The Rolling Stones. MERCHANDISING AND LICENSING NEWS Treats for Fans of the Harry Potter Wizarding World Barnes & Noble, the world’s largest retail bookseller, has announced special events on November 17 to celebrate the launch of the second film in the Fantastic Beasts series. Google Ropes Sephora Into Home Hub Partnership Acting on the explosion of viewership for beauty tutorials on YouTube, Google has announced a partnership with cosmetics giant Sephora for its new Home Hub device. The Home Hub is a variant of Google Home, and is a touch-screen enabled voice assistant. Sephora, with over a million YouTube subscribers, brings its YouTube beauty tutorials exclusively to the Home Hub, which is likely to further Google’s endeavour to popularise its Home and Home Hub products. Google has also been working with brands like Estée Lauder, Disney and BuzzFeed Tasty on separate partnerships for Home Hub, to expand its exclusive content offerings. Google is also selling the Home Hub device through Sephora’s website, and plans to sell it in stores as well. COPYRIGHT TIP A sound recording, or a recorded song contains multiple underlying works. Abstract This paper engages with ‘Frankenstein’ as a narrative structure in Indian popular cinema, in the context of posthumanism. Scholarship pertaining to monsters/monstrosity in Indian films has generally been addressed within the horror genre. However, the present paper aspires to understand monstrosity/monsters as a repercussion of science and technology (S&T) through the cinematic depiction of Frankenstein-like characters, thus shifting the locus of examining monstrosity from the usual confines of horror to the domain of science fiction. The paper contends Enthiran/Robot (Shankar 2010 Tamil/Hindi) as an emblematic instance of posthuman monstrosity that employs a Frankenstein narrative. The paper hopes to bring out the significance of cinematic imagination concerning posthuman monstrosity, to engage with collective social fears and anxieties about various cutting-edge technologies as well as other socio-cultural concerns and desires at the interface of S&T, embodiment and the society/nation. Keywords: Posthumanism, Monstrosity, Frankenstein, Indian popular cinema, Science Fiction, Enthiran/Robot The Frankenstein narrative and Posthuman Monstrosity It has been argued that in contemporary techno-culture Science Fiction (hereafter SF) performs the role of “modern myth(s)” (Klein, 2010, p.137).

  • Thugs of Hindostan & Festivals: It's Celebration Time for In-Cinema
Publication: Exchange4Media.com Date: 09/11/2018 Thugs of Hindostan & festivals: It's celebration time for in-cinema advertising industry Players expect 50-100% increase in revenues during the festival period Misbaah Mansuri Over the years, films riding on big stars and cashing in on festive weekends of Diwali, Christmas and Eid have brought much joy to the exhibition and distribution services across the industry as far as in-cinema advertising is concerned. Making the most of the festive holiday, YRF slotted the release of Thugs of Hindostan a day after Diwali. Starring Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan and Katrina Kaif, the adventure drama is expected to write new records for Bollywood films. Industry experts predict that the big release combined with the festive time will result in considerable increase in the advertiser interest and in-cinema advertising revenues. Talking about the trend, Devang Sampat, Director – Strategic Initiatives, Cinépolis India, said, “We expect this to be an excellent week for our advertising business. Typically, we see a spike in inquiries during such festive weekends to the tune of 50-70 per cent over the average weeks.” Sampat said with 350 screens of Cinèpolis, they are expecting to reach the highest ever Diwali week advertising revenue this time. “With the release of Thugs of Hindostan during the festive week, we expect the advertising revenues to grow three fold as compared to our average weeks,” he said. Rahul Puri, Managing Director at Mukta A2 Cinemas, asserted that there will be a large increase in advertiser interest as well as revenues. “The festive period is one of the key advertising periods in the year across all media platforms and vehicles, and in-film advertising will be no different as media planners and buyers allocate their budgets to make a larger impact on the minds of potential customers.

International Journal of Advanced Science and Technology Vol. 29, No. 12s, (2020), pp. 09-14 Depicting Hero In Mainstream Tamil Cinema: The Mould That Changes Prabakaran V* & Dr. G Balasubramaniaraja** *Ph.D. Scholar, Reg No: 17234011021141, ManonmaniamSundaranar University, Tirunelveli, Tamilnadu, India. Assistant Professor, Department of Visual Communication, FSH, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Tamilnadu, India **Professor and Head, Department of Communication, ManonmaniamSundaranar University, Tirunelveli, Tamilnadu, India Abstract The Protagonist, a hero, generally is the central character of any film. The antagonist, a Villain, performs against the Hero and negative side of the story. However, at times hero characters come with a negative shade. The films come up with the reasonable (at least to them) flashback stories in antihero subjects. They justify their harmful protagonist activities. For example, all the don stories of Tamil cinema have a flashback explaining why he has become so. MGR used the medium to communicate the positive elements only to maintain his image among the audiences and to convey his ideologies. He even made sure that his film titles convey the positivity. In this paper, the researcher analyses the changing image of the hero characters in Tamil cinema Keywords: The Hero, Tamil Cinema, Image building, antihero, Characterization Introduction Hero characters in Tamil cinema are classified into these categories. Category One, the good guy, who does good to the society in a natural way whatever the situation he faces. Second one whatever the way maybe; doing good to the society is matters. The third one is not at all good, so do not expect good from him.
