INTRODUCTION This document was prepared as a product of the Interpretation and Visitor Orientation Plan for the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. It is intended primarily as a summary reference of key information for use by those who are preparing public information and interpretation for the world heritage area. It is not intended to be fully comprehensive and anyone requiring detailed information on any topic is encouraged to refer to the list of selected references and additional material not listed. It is also recommended that all facts quoted here are checked from primary sources. A major source for this document was the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area Nomination (see reference list), which is a very useful compendium of information but of limited availability. All other key sources used in compiling this summary are listed in the references, along with some other useful documents which were not consulted. CD-ROM of this document plus images obtained to date - 1 - - 2 - 1.0 INTRODUCTION The Fish River Water Supply Scheme [FRWS] is a medium size but important water supply with the headwaters in the Central Highlands of NSW, west of the Great Dividing Range and to the south of Oberon. It supplies water in an area from Oberon, north to Portland, Mount Piper Power Station and beyond, and east, across the Great Dividing Range, to Wallerawang town, Wallerawang Power Station, Lithgow and the Upper Blue Mountains. It is the source of water for many small to medium communities, including Rydal, Lidsdale, Cullen Bullen, Glen Davis and Marrangaroo, as well as many rural properties through which its pipelines pass. It was established by Act of Parliament in 1945 as a Trading Undertaking of the NSW State Government. The FRWS had its origins as a result of the chronic water supply problems of the towns of Lithgow, Wallerawang, Portland and Oberon from as early as 1937, which were exacerbated by the 1940-43 drought. -

Central Blue Mountains Rotary is one of five rotary Clubs located in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. We are innovative and progressive... we are a “Can Do” group of Rotarians, proud of what we achieve, and we have fun doing it. We are a club of 43 members (40 active and 3 honorary). In Rotary, women are the fastest growing membership segment and we are proud to say that 25% of our members are women. Our club meets weekly on Wednesday at the “Grandview Hotel”, 174 Great Western Highway, Wentworth Falls at 6.30pm. Our meeting format is relaxed and we have great guest speakers. Sure, we sell raffle tickets and we cook and sell sausage sandwiches just like other Rotary clubs - we have a big catering van to do this....It’s great! But our community service activities are the heart of what we do, ranging from local projects to helping communities overseas. We have a website http://centralbluerotary.org/ Perhaps our greatest challenge at present; We have been awarded a RAWCS Project Fund to raise A$280,000 to construct a new, enlarged Astha Home for Girls in Kathmandu, Nepal. The massive earthquake that struck Nepal in 2015 caused much upheaval to the lives of many people and destroyed or damaged many homes and buildings, especially in the hills and valleys outside of Kathmandu. The Astha Home for Girls is currently located in rented premises but the owner wants it back for his family members who lost their home in the earthquake. -

Box 1666, Canberra, A.C.T. 2601 ABSTRACT This study examines sediment sources and chronology in underground sediment sinks in the Jenolan Caves system, N.S.W., Australia. Relationships between mineral magnetic ratios are used to identify the sources of modern sediment to the cave system. Correlation between the naturally occurring radionuclides 226Ra and 232Th quantify these findings. When considered with historical evidence and fallout 137Cs chronology, a detailed description of the variations in source contributions with time is developed. It is concluded that catchment disturbance associated with forestry activity in the early 1950s significantly changed the relative contributions of the two contributing subcatchments. However, subsequent changes in sediment deposition rate, and by implication sediment supply, were probably more dependent on rainfall changes than relative variations in supply from the two catchments. INTRODUCTION This paper reports on recent sediment transport and deposition at Jenolan Caves, the premier tourist caves in Australia. Over recent years, concern has been expressed by the cave’s management that the mean water level has risen and the amount of fine sediment being transported within the caves has increased. -

Illustrating Mobility: Networks of Visual Print Culture and the Periodical Contexts of Modern Australian Writing VICTORIA KUTTAINEN James Cook University The history of periodical illustration offers a rich example of the dynamic web of exchange in which local and globally distributed agents operated in partnership and competition. These relationships form the sort of print network Paul Eggert has characterised as being shaped by everyday exigencies and ‘practical workaday’ strategies to secure readerships and markets (19). In focussing on the history of periodical illustration in Australia, this essay seeks to show the operation of these localised and international links with reference to four case studies from the early twentieth century, to argue that illustrations offer significant but overlooked contexts for understanding the production and consumption of Australian texts.1 The illustration of works published in Australia occurred within a busy print culture that connected local readers to modern innovations and technology through transnational networks of literary and artistic mobility in the years also defined by the rise of cultural nationalism. The nationalist Bulletin (1880–1984) benefited from a newly restricted copyright scene, while also relying on imported technology and overseas talent. Despite attempts to extend the illustrated material of the Bulletin, the Lone Hand (1907–1921) could not keep pace with technologically superior productions arriving from overseas. The most graphically impressive modern Australian magazines, the Home (1920–1942) and the BP Magazine (1928–1942), invested significant energy and capital into placing illustrated Australian stories alongside commercial material and travel content in ways that complicate our understanding of the interwar period. One of the workaday practicalities of the global book trade which most influenced local Australian producers and consumers prior to the twentieth century was the lack of protection for international copyright.
