These staff were normally housed in these nearby gatehouses or cottages to allow the gatekeeper easy access to their duties The movement of traffic was managed by a person who was required to open and close either boom or farm paddock type gates to ensure no encroachment into the operational railway corridors as trains passed. The building designs were readily constructed and easily identifiable from most other housing. They were built with a central single chimney. Many of the houses were located along the Blue Mountains line – 5 remain out of 12 built. Some houses were built on the main southern line at Mittagong, while others were built on the western line to Broken Hill and others also on the line to Wallangarra. Some example of surviving houses can be seen below, Nevertire, Uralla and Armidale taken in 2016. __________________________________________________________________________________________ COMMUNTIY REUSES OF RAILWAY STATIONS IN RURAL NSW PART 3 – SOUTHERN NSW Where does the NSW railway network stand in 2016 with vacated station buildings?. What has become of them?. As the decline of the NSW railway network started in the 1950/60ss, many stations were vacated, unused and not maintained. Over the years this lack of care has increased. Even as late as 2014 some heritage station buildings were still being demolished. This last article in our 3 part series investigates heritage railway buildings and their reuse in 2016. This includes recent changes/demolitions. In reading this listing, you will notice in southern/south western NSW that there are a number of reused stations. This reuse is mostly by community groups or museums but not many actual businesses. Picton - Operational stop and in use. RAIL HERITAGE WEEKEND IN SYDNEY – JUNE 2016 On the 3 day Long Weekend in June 2016, various NSW Transport Heritage operators came to Central railway station. Working with Transport Heritage NSW, these operators put on numerous heritage train trips across southern and western Sydney over the 3 days. The trains used included the newly returned to operating condition Red Rattler set F1 from HET. Steam locomotive 3642 hauled carriages and a diesel 4001 set hauled carriages from the RTM. A private owner had a static display 42101 which was connected up to a restored carriage from 3801 Ltd. These static displays were placed nearby some static RTM displays using a 48 diesel and mixed carriages. The use of heritage single deck electric set F1 is first time in nearly 14years it has been allowed out on the rails. NSWHRSI followed the heritage tours from Central to Erskenville, St Peters, Turella, Arncliffe and Sydenham to capture various views of the action over the 3 days.     Cooma-Monaro Shire Final Report 2015 Date: 22 October 2015 Cooma-Monaro LGA Final Report 2015 1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY LGA OVERVIEW Cooma-Monaro Local Government Area The Cooma-Monaro Shire Council area is located in the south east region of NSW. The Shire comprises a land area of approximately 5229 square kilometres comprising undulating to hilly rural grazing land, timbered lifestyle areas and retreat bushland. The Local Government Area (LGA) is adjoined by four other LGAs – Palerang to the north, Tumut and Snowy River to the west, Bombala to the south and Bega Valley to the east. The main economic activities in the Shire include sheep and cattle grazing plus the “provision” of hobby farms / rural home sites in the Cooma area for the Cooma market, in the Michelago area (ie the northern part of the Shire) for the Canberra market and at various other locations including along the Murrumbidgee River and at the southeast periphery near Nimmitabel. These rural/ residential blocks and bush retreats cater for a number of sub markets and demand tends to ebb and flow. Number of properties valued this year and the total land value in dollars The Cooma-Monaro LGA comprises Residential, Rural, Commercial, Industrial, Infrastructure/Special Purposes, Environmental and Public Recreation zones. 5,388 properties were valued at the Base Date of 1 July 2015, and valuations are reflective of the property market at that time. Previous Notices of Valuation issued to owners for the Base Date of 1 July 2014. The Snowy River LGA property market generally has remained static across all sectors with various minor fluctuations.

  • Oatley Railway Station
    OATLEY RAILWAY STATION STATION OPENING The line from Hurstville to Sutherland was opened on 26th December, 1885 and continued to Waterfall on 6th March, 1886. How was it that the Railway Department determined that a station would be provided at Oatley? A deputation of residents from the area met the Minister for Public Works in January, 1886, and proposed that stations be provided near Hurstville (i.e. at Penshurst) and at Oatley. The Minister, Jacob Garrard, acknowledged that, in relation to Oatley, the “gradient is very great, which is a serious objection”. Notwithstanding this problem, Garrard acknowledged that a station would “meet the conveniences of the residents” and he, therefore, resolved to submit the idea of a station at Oatley to the officers of the Railway Department for report.1 No Railway official seemed to question the Minister’s wisdom, notwithstanding the problem of the gradient. Voila! A station appeared. In 1886, the total population of Oatley was nine people who lived in two houses.2 Was the station opened for the “convenience” of just nine people or was there another motive. Was one of those nine people an influential person who was able to direct the Minister to approve the provision of a station? The Minister’s remarks dismiss what author, William Bayley, states as the reason for the construction of the station. Bayley wrote that the station was provided for tourism.3 The reason for the provision of the station remains a mystery. The station at Oatley opened in 1886 but the press and the public called it Oatley’s.

As part of providing a public transport service that meets community needs a Foley Government will do all it can to make travelling on public transport safer. That’s why Labor will: • Re-introduce Guardian train services on Friday and Saturday nights; and • Run all-night train services from Kings Cross to Town Hall and Central Stations. Feeling safe and having confidence in the security on our trains is a major factor for people choosing whether or not to use the rail network, especially for women, parents with children, and older and other vulnerable people. The NRMA’s Seeing Red on Rail reported personal security as the second most pressing issue for over 11,000 thousand commuters. 38% of commuters in this survey said that they do not feel safe at certain times of the day. The Sydney Trains network includes 12 lines, 176 stations and many interchanges. NSW TrainLink network includes 5 intercity lines and over 130 stations. It is a large area to cover. Knowing that there is assistance if other passengers are being anti-social, violent or abusive – especially at night, can increase the numbers of people using public transport as well as improve security. Under the Baird Liberal Government, security on the rail network has been cut. When the Liberals and Nationals came to government in 2011 there were 600 dedicated transit officers for trains and 300 commuter police attached to local area commands.
