    Belgrave Harriers The English National Cross-Country Championships _______________________________________________________________________________________________ The English National Cross-Country Championships — Men The first ever ‘National’ Cross-Country Championship was held at Buckhurst Hill, Epping Forest in 1876, organized by Thames Hare & Hounds. Invitations had been sent to Birmingham Athletic Club, Spartan Harriers and South London Harriers, but there was the possibility of the race being additionally thrown open to any other cross-country club. In fact, just the three London clubs took up the challenge. With a total of 32 runners between them, in pouring rain, after the trail-layers had run out of paper to mark the way, every single runner went off course. The race was declared void. The organizer, Thames Hare & Hounds founder member Walter Rye, made sure that successive races went off more successfully and, unsurprisingly, they were held in his club’s own territory – Roehampton – covering, variously, Wimbledon Common, Putney Heath, Malden, Morden, and other places that we know so well. In 1883 the National Cross-Country Union was formed to ensure that Amateur Athletic Association laws were followed, and the more appropriate title of the English Cross-County Union was assumed in 1933. The current organizing body, the English Cross-Country Association (ECCA), was established in 1992 following the amalgamation of the former men’s and women’s bodies, the English Cross-Country Union and the Women’s Cross- Country and Road Running Association. However, under whatever banner the races have been held, they have almost always been known as the ‘National.’ No championships were held from 1915 to 1919 due to the First World War and then, on resumption in 1920, Belgrave Harriers at last sent along a team to take part in the race in Windsor Great Park where King George V was to present the medals, specially struck at the Mint and bearing his image; this was in recognition of all that the sport had done for the Services during the war.

    AINTREE RACECOURSE All About The Horse Promoting Horse Welfare At The Grand National Meeting Objectives Negative press coverage and public concern over horse welfare following the 2011 Grand National meeting prompted a joint review of the meeting by Aintree and the BHA. The Winner Ballabriggs was visibly exhausted following the race and his jockey dismounted just after the winning post leaving an exhausted looking horse to be cooled down in front of racegoers before not returning to the Winner’s Enclosure. The jockey also received a much publicised whip ban. This post race confusion left it difficult to communicate what was happening to the public in attendance and watching on TV. A 30 point plan was identified to improve welfare provisions for horses both prior to and following races and to promote a positive welfare message to a list of stakeholders. Working with the BHA, the 30 point Review highlighted: • The requirement for better post race care of horses and procedures • The need to change current unsaddling arrangements and remove working media from the pull-up area (exclusion BBC/RUK) • Greater emphasis on decision making between Aintree and the BHA to remove the pre-race parade • Greater requirement to change processes on racedays to aid welfare • Greater communication between stakeholders and the public • The opportunity to educate the public about high standards of welfare in racing and at the course.     CHAIRLADY’S MESSAGE Welcome to our 2018 rally brochure. This is my second year as Chairlady and now that I have got my first year ‘under my belt’ I think we may enjoy this year even more. Simon and I would like to thank you all for the support you have given us throughout our first year. The centre held 35 rallies in 2017 and there was a mixture of venues and activities to choose from. I would like to thank all the Marshals for giving their time in organising and running these rallies for our enjoyment. Rallying is a great social encounter for everyone, young, old and the whole family and South Yorkshire Centre keeps some fine traditions including our Centre Queen and our Carnival Floats of which we are truly proud. The Centre Queen is crowned at our May Day rally and we have 3 carnival rallies at which we enter a Queens float and a South Yorkshire Centre float which in 2018 is themed around ‘Back to School’. So, get those school uniforms on and join in. You will see in this brochure that once again there is a wide variety of rallies to offer. If you are new and aren’t quite sure if rallying is for you give the Rally Marshal or a Committee member a call. I am sure they will answer all your questions and put you at ease. I would like to thank the land owners, site managers and farmers who allow us to use their land and facilities. Please show consideration for their property by noting ‘out of bounds’ areas and follow the centre rally rules with regards to the Red Flag should it be raised.
