It is testament to the whole workforce the amount of work which ‘just gets done’ around here. Our staff are second to none and you only have to hear the comments about how good our roads are to drive on and how beauti- ful and ‘homely’ our town is to realise this is not going unnoticed. We not only kick goals outside but the engine room is all the staff in the office who ‘get the paperwork’ done. These days the world is full of reports (exponentially increasing!) COVID-19 has brought an unusual experience for us here in remote council land – the rest of the world has caught up with us. (Photo: Council social distancing at our monthly meeting). Every now and again we receive a lovely email and this week was a special one. A traveller who had a flat battery was at a loss and made his way to the council where council staff called Jim Newman who promptly came and jump started the car and loaned his battery charger to them. It might happen in other country towns but I doubt whether this would happen in the city. Above and beyond the call of duty and one very appreciative traveller to boot. So much so that he took the time to write a lovely thank you letter to council and letting us know he will be back (with friends). The past couple of months have been quite hectic with a number of new positions being filled in the office and also on the works team crew. There are still positions vacant at the time of writing this so check out the website – your job might just be around the corner. RAPAD Rural Financial Counselling Service NQ (Paul and Paula Misapeka) visited during August to assist any of our small businesses with applying for the government funding which is available due to COVID-19 impacts. August was another busy month with the Mayor and myself attending the Quarterly RAPADWSA and ORRTG meetings in Bar- caldine which reviewed the potential for the seven councils to work towards having similar water technology in each council. The goal is to minimise the ongoing cost of maintenance and develop in house training and ‘cross pollination’ of technical knowledge across the shires. The roads group (ORRTG) was congratulated on being able to achieve all the targets set by TMR across the shires which means future funding through this group will be easier in the future. The Outback Highway Development Council Inc. held its business planning meeting via ‘ZOOM’ which saw the final touches on the submission to the Infrastructure Australia Stage 1 completed. The project ‘ Sealing the Outback Way’ is to enhance inland Australia’s transnational connectivity to drive economic opportunity and address social disadvantage. 18 Herbert Street Boulia Qld 4829 T: 07 47463188 E: [email protected] What’s happening in Boulia you ask? The Government have earmarked funding for projects which will generate jobs and sup- port local towns and communities. We have a few projects waiting ‘ready to go’ if we are successful in our applications. Airport resurfacing ($1.7m) Industrial Estate (stage 2) bitumen sealing roadways ($1.5m) Residential Estate - Stage 1 ($1.5m) Min Min Encounter Upgrade Stage 1a ($570k) Proposed Industrial es- tate layout – ready to be sealed . Stage 1 ready to be completed in Dec 2020. Min Min Eencounter – artist impression of poten- tial ‘facelift’. The proposed Hub would provide an improved state of the art facility combining Council Administration offices and Council Chambers, Library, Post Office, meeting spaces and tenancy spaces for offices, in turn freeing up prime pieces of real estate (the current Library and Post Office) for other business opportunities. The study was kicked off with the engagement of Mead Perry Group in 2019 who undertook community consultation on the pro- posed building, which was then followed by the creation of concept designs by Griffith University. The second phase of the pro- ject has seen the initial concept designs being built on by architects POD (People Oriented Design), who have now completed Schematic Designs (inclusive of cost estimates) on the building for Council. 18 Herbert Street Boulia Qld 4829 T: 07 47463188 E: [email protected] Snippets from Corporate Services Rate Notices Council has issued the Rate Notices for the 1st Half of 2020/21 year, if you have not received your Rate Notice, please advise Council by phoning 07 4746 3188 or email [email protected]. • FLOOD WARNING SYSTEM for the GEORGINA RIVER & EYRE CREEK
Bureau Home > Australia > Queensland > Rainfall & River Conditions > River Brochures > Georgina and Eyre FLOOD WARNING SYSTEM for the GEORGINA RIVER & EYRE CREEK This brochure describes the flood warning system operated by the Australian Government, Bureau of Meteorology for the Georgina River and Eyre Creek. It includes reference information which will be useful for understanding Flood Warnings and River Height Bulletins issued by the Bureau's Flood Warning Centre during periods of high rainfall and flooding. Contained in this document is information about: (Last updated September 2019) Flood Risk Previous Flooding Flood Forecasting Local Information Flood Warnings and Bulletins Interpreting Flood Warnings and River Height Bulletins Flood Classifications Other Links Eyre Creek at Glengyle Flood Risk The Georgina River and Eyre Creek system drains an area of approximately 210,000 square kilometres. It rises to the north west of Mt Isa with three main tributaries, the Buckle, Sander and Ranken Rivers. The latter two have their headwaters in the Northern Territory. Further inflow enters the system from numerous creeks and rivers, the two main tributaries being the Burke and Hamilton Rivers. The Burke River drains the area to the north of Boulia and enters the Georgina River about 20 kilometres upstream of Marion Downs, whilst the Hamilton rises to the northeast of Boulia and enters the main Georgina below Marion Downs. Towns located within the catchment include Urandangie, Dajarra, Boulia and Bedourie. Very little rainfall is needed to bring the country to a standstill. Following flood rains, the main channel fills fairly quickly and then spreads out into the neighboring channels and watercourses for kilometres on either side.
