William Hathorne, who emigrated from England in 1630, was the first of Hawthorne's ancestors to arrive in the colonies. After arriving, William persecuted Quakers. William's son John Hathorne was one of the judges who oversaw the Salem Witch Trials. (One theory is that having learned about this, the au- thor added the "w" to his surname in his early twenties, shortly after graduating from college.) Hawthorne's father, Nathaniel Hathorne, Sr., was a sea captain who died in 1808 of yellow fever, when Hawthorne was only four years old, in Raymond, Maine. Hawthorne attended Bowdoin College at the expense of an uncle from 1821 to 1824, befriending classmates Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and future president Franklin Pierce. While there he joined the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. Until the publication of his Twice-Told Tales in 1837, Hawthorne wrote in the comparative obscurity of what he called his "owl's nest" in the family home. I should like to consider a few of the possible sources which serve chiefly to under- score the theme of the transformation or re-creation of human life, these being Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Godwin's St. Leon, and Milton's Paradise Lost. Related to the supernatural motif of the story is the meaning in Italian of the names of four major characters. That Hawthorne could not have failed to know Frankenstein has been assumed by R. P. Adams for "The Birthmark." 1Mary Shelley's first work was a celebrated, perhaps even notorious, novel during the period of Hawthorne's early development, and it continued to be popular throughout the century. There were to be at least nine reprints in English of this work of 1818, two of them published in the United States.2 The third edition of 1831, with a long new pre- face by the author, constituted the ninth of the popular "Standard Novels" of Colburne and Bentley.3 Hawthorne probably saw the 1833 Philadelphia reprint by the well-known firm of Carey and Lea, to which he had addressed a request in 1832 concerning an article for the Souvenir, one of its publications.4 Frankenstein is a distinguished specimen of the Gothic tale, a genre which was promi- nent in Hawthorne's reading.5 It has left its traces in The Scarlet 1 R. Repeatedly, Hawthorne‘s stories demonstrate his difficulty in trying to identify his own opinion on the subject. Though Hawthorne seems to want to believe in the optimistic potential of the spiritual and intellectual ideal presented in Emersonian Transcendentalism, he consistently dwells on the evil and blackness that may be contained in the human heart.

Master of Arts (English), May, 1975, 122 pp., bibliography, 119 titles. Nathaniel Hawthorne's sketches, as distinguished from his tales, fall into three main types: the essay-sketch, the sketch-proper, and the vignette-sketch. A definition of these works includes a brief discussion of their inception, source, and development, and a study of the individual pieces as representative of types within each of the three main divisions. A consideration of the sketches from their inception through their final form reveals a great deal of the formative process of some of Hawthorne's ideas of literature and of the development of specific techniques to cope with his themes. I have reviewed the Modern Library edition of _Mosses_, and given it five stars, so if you want my comments on the entire book please look up this other version and see my review there.Some may argue that an incomplete version of a book deserves one star. I felt, however, that giving a low rating to this book because it does not include all the stories might be construed as a negative judgment on Hawthorne's work. In addition, one must keep in mind that reviews often appear under different editions of a particular book.

Sears became interested the Transcendentalists after acquiring land in Harvard and restoring the Fruitlands Farmhouse. Materials continued to be collected by the museum throughout the 20th century. In 2016, Fruitlands Museum became The Trustees’ 116th reservation, and these manuscript materials were relocated to the Archives & Research Center in Sharon, Massachusetts. In Harvard, the Fruitlands Museum site continues to display the objects that Sears collected. The museum features four separate collections of significant Shaker, Native American, Transcendentalist, and American art and artifacts. The property features a late 18th century farmhouse that was once home to the writer Louisa May Alcott and her family. Today it is a National Historic Landmark. III N. 12 2016 Doing what comes naturally: the domestication of bug and humbug at Melville’s table alph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) was a landmark in nineteenth- century America. The ideas of this acclaimed lecturer, essayist, and R poet had a strong influence on the development of American culture. He encouraged both the scholar and the poet to stand up and take a central role in the building of the nation’s identity. Although inspired by European writers, he urged them to break free from European models in order to create a new American culture based on philosophical, religious, literary and cultural emancipation. Written after his return from Europe in the aftermath of the death of his wife and the resignation from the ministry in 1836, the essay “Nature” was Emerson’s first published work, summing up his ideas and laying down the principles of Transcendentalism. Inspired by Western philosophers such as Plato, Swedenborg, Rousseau, and Kant, this movement rejected traditional religious and intellectual authority. Instead, they proposed the empowering of the self-reliant individual deeply connected to nature and connected to God through nature. The essay shows Emerson’s manifest interest in the natural sciences, recently acquired while in France. In Paris, besides attending a lecture on chemistry, he visited the Jardin des Plantes and the Cabinet of Natural History, which caused a lasting impact on him: “Emerson’s moment of insight into the interconnectedness of things in the Jardin des Plantes was a moment of almost visionary intensity that pointed him away from theology and toward science” (Richardson 143).
