The Hollyfield School

HOLLYFIELD SCHOOL FUND

The Hollyfield School is here to provide an outstanding educational experience, complemented by the values that we instil in our students of self-reliance, responsibility and honesty.

In contrast with our aspirations & ambitions for your children, our public sector funding is frozen and our capital allocation funding has been slashed. Providing the best environment for learning and the best life opportunities under these circumstances is ever more challenging.

The Hollyfield School Fund has been established to enable us to advance the education and welfare of all our students. Funds raised are used to provide first rate resources and opportunities for everyone at Hollyfield School.

We have been fortunate over the years to have had a number of benefactors who have shared our vision and have generously helped us towards our goals. For example, they have provided financial support for the excellent annual school drama productions and also helped us improve facilities such as the refurbishment of our science labs. In recent years, Hollyfield School Fund monies have helped us rebuild the student toilet block and to provide a wonderful outside learning environment, The Hollywood Wildlife Garden. We are also looking forward to the internal and external refurbishment of the canteen facilities.

One of the ways in which you can support The Hollyfield School is to provide financial assistance. Your support enables the school to consider projects and equipment to benefit the students that would not ordinarily be affordable within the annual school funding.

The current suggested contribution is £30 per month, per child, or £360 per year.

For the majority of donors (who are UK residents) ticking the gift aid box will enable us to reclaim a further 25 pence per £1 from the tax office. While some families support at a higher level, others prefer to give to the school in other ways, for example, by donating their skills. Whatever donation you feel able to make is greatly appreciated and will be used to benefit all our students.

How you can contribute

• A donation form, with Gift Aid declaration follows.

If you feel able to contribute a small, regular contribution, please complete the forms and return it to the Bursar in the Finance office at school.

YEAR GROUP NEWS…………….

Head Year 7 Mr Redfearn Keep it up! It is an exciting time to be in Year 7! CAS Day trips are being finalised for next month and this will be a great day. Whether students are going to the Museum, London Zoo or France I hope they are looking forward to it. Learning outside of the classroom is an important tool and one which can lead to many environments. Letters are also out for the PGL trip later in the year. There is a large amount of paperwork for Mr Miller to work through! I would like to extend my thanks to the students that helped out at Open Evening. It was a hugely positive evening and the pupil’s behaviour and effort was outstanding throughout. Good work Year 7, let’s keep the standards high all the way to half term.

Head Year 8 Miss McDonnell A BIG thank you to all the amazing Year 8 guides at open evening, they did an amazing job and were so confident, polite and knowledgeable showing off our School. For many new families, they were the highlight of the evening and provided the best type of role model of a Hollyfield student.

We are looking forward to seeing as many parents as possible at the Parent Information Evening on Tuesday 17 October at 6.30-8.30pm. For me in particular it will be a great chance to meet everyone for the first time.

Head Year 10 Mr Winpenny Year 10 have been working extremely hard this term. Well done to the following 5 students who have obtained the most number of achievement points:

1. Marcus Dyke 2. Omar Bouchaib 3. Emmanuel Appiah 4. Oliver Henning 5. Euan Bailey

In terms of achievement, most of these have been awarded for a combination of excellent classwork and enthusiasm. This highlights how hard the year group are working in their new courses.

9

The Hollyfield School

In terms of overall conduct (achievements vs behaviour) the forms are currently ranked in the following order:

1. 10 Apollo 2. 10 Mercury 3. 10 Saturn 4. 10 Neptune 5. 10 Mars 6. 10 Jupiter

These positions are really close and will hopefully change over the next half term.

Head Year 11 Mr Wilson Year 11 Key Dates and News Personalised Learning Checklists PLCs can be very helpful for young people to revise effectively. Each department has provided a list of all topics in the GCSE course to allow Year 11 students to establish gaps in knowledge and prioritise revision.

From Monday 16 October, PLCs will be available for download from the ‘Curriculum’ section of the school website. Select the subject and the PDF can be downloaded from there.

Key Dates Walking-Talking Mocks - 1-3 November PPE (Pre-Public Exams) - 13-20 November Celebration for Learning - 25 May Prom - 13 July

Head of Sixth Form Mr Warren Enrichment Sessions This year, students from Years 12 and 13 have been part of various debating sessions as part of their enrichment programme. So far, heated debates have taken place on foxhunting, abortion and animal rights. Guest speakers have taken to the floor to argue their opinion for or against our student led teams. The students have been engaged and thoroughly motivated by the arguments within the sessions. More debates will take place after half term, including Brexit floored by our very own Mr Russell and Mr Buckman.

Year 13's are also having a compulsory UCAS meeting during briefing on Monday morning at 8.30am in the common room. All students are expected to attend whether applying to university or not.

SUBJECT NEWS…………….

English – Mrs Holden During the summer term some of our Year 7 and Year 8 students (currently in Year 8 and 9) entered a national young writers competition on the subject ‘Welcome to Wonderland’. The task was writing a mini saga of only 100 words in a fantasy land of their creation. This certainly captured imaginations as a staggering number of Hollyfield students were selected as winners in the competition. The winners will all have the opportunity to get their works published in the ‘Welcome to Wonderland – Surrey Adventures’ publication. Many congratulations to the following budding young writers!

Netball Champions Well done to the Year 8 netball team for beating Raynes Park an impressive 24-2! What a fantastic achievement. A special mention should go to Florence Bragg who managed to score the majority of the goals. The week saw a second victory, the Year 10 team beat Surbiton High 17-8. Primary Football Link This week a number of Year 7 football teams played against a strong squad from St Joseph's Primary School. The competition was well contested and all of the boys showed great spirit and played in a friendly nature. For Hollyfield the stand out performer was Daniel Goldsack who was brilliant throughout, taking his opportunities on goal very well. Thanks also to the officials for the day; Cameron, Freddie and Jake.

Solid Start Year 7 played their first rugby fixture on Tuesday against Coombe Boys School coming out 7-4, winners through number of trys scored. The team was of mixed experience but definitely did not show it on the pitch. The team were organised and played to the game plan much through the communication on Rhys at stand off and the guidance of Owen at scrum half. Vigo showed his speed a number of times throughout the game and was rewarded with 2 trys. Oliver S gained the MOTM Award and led by example throughout, his carries were strong and he deserved the points he scored. The side were captained by Adam who quietly went about his business and showed real heart in defence. Overall, it was excellent to watch and I am pleased by the spirit the game was played in. I hope we can continue to build on this strong start throughout the season and this requires continued commitment to rugby club every week.

CATERING FAQs

We have put together a list of our FAQs we encounter regarding school meals and the canteen at Hollyfield.

Please let us know if you have any unanswered questions regarding free school meals - email [email protected].

1) How do I know what my son/daughter eats in the school canteen and if he/she is using his/her Free School Meal allowance?

You can check/view what your child eats at the canteen via Parentmail (our internet payment system). Click on the ‘your account’ option and then payments in the top right hand corner, click on the orange icon in the dinner money balance. This will give you a list of when meals were purchased and click on view to see what was bought.

2) What are the criteria for Free School Meals and how do I apply?

Residents of Richmond and Kingston Boroughs can apply online through this link https://www.kingston.gov.uk/info/200130/education_schools_and_nurseries/364/form_apply_for_free_s chool_meals.

3) What is the Free School meal allowance at Hollyfield and what are the restrictions?

Students receive £2.30 on their account every day which can be used before school, at break and lunchtime. This amount does not rollover if it is not spent. However, if a purchase is made before school or at break time then the allowance may not be enough to cover a meal. We encourage you to add £1 per day to top up the free allowance for additional purchases.

4) How do I know what is on offer in the canteen and the prices?

Please see the link to our latest prices/flyers http://www.hollyfield.kingston.sch.uk/hfs2014v3/parents.html

If you have any queries about these points please contact:

IN CASE OF SEVERE WEATHER CONDITIONS

OPENCHECK

Circumstances can arise from time to time when it becomes necessary to close the school due to extreme weather or other unforeseen events. In the event of severe weather we shall do everything we can to remain open but if at any time you wish to check if the school is open, you may do so in the following ways.

Hollyfield uses OpenCheck, a service operated by LGFL to provide up-to-date information to parents or carers, indicating whether a school is open or closed. In order to check our current status, simply browse to the OpenCheck website (http://map.lgfl.org.uk/opencheck), select “Kingston upon Thames” as the borough and “The Hollyfield School and Sixth Form Centre” as the school.

If you are unable to contact the main school switchboard, the status of the school can also be checked by calling 020 8408 7508 and keying in the school’s DCSF code: 3145404

Please also ensure you check the school website for regular updates.
