FLC F19 C fm i-ii.indd 2 3/28/19 10:59 AM An inspiring children’s picture book about the indomitable spirit of Jamaican six-time Olympic medal winner Shelly Ann Fraser Pryce.

I Am a Promise takes readers on Shelly Ann’s journey from her childhood in the tough inner-city community of Waterhouse in Kingston, Jamaica, through her development as a young athlete, to her first Olympic gold medal in the 100-meter sprint in 2008. The story charts how Shelly Ann’s commitment to hard work as well as the encouragement of loved ones helped her achieve her dreams against great odds and challenging life experiences. Most importantly, I Am a Promise encourages young readers to believe in themselves and to maximize their own promise to the world.

“Another powerful and poignant novel deftly created by one of the most prolific master novelists on either side of the pond.Home Girl is a page- turner, with not a dull moment. Loved it from the rooter to the tooter.” —Eric Jerome Dickey, best-selling author of Before We Were Wicked

This isn’t my home. Haven’t had a proper home since . . . This is just somewhere I’ll be resting my bones for a week and maybe a bit. This time next year you’ll forget who I am. I haven’t got a diddly where I’ll be by then. But I’m used to it.

New from the UK-based best-selling black British author and winner of the Guardian Children’s Book Award, Home Girl is the story of Naomi, a teenage girl growing up fast in the foster care system. It is a wholly modern story which sheds a much-needed light on what can be an unsettling life—and the consequences that follow when children are treated like pawns on a family chessboard. Home Girl is fast-paced and funny, tender, tragic, and full of courage— Home Girl just like Naomi. It is award-winning author Alex Wheatle’s most moving Alex Wheatle and personal novel to date.

Alex Wheatle, one of the most-read black British writers, is the author of several best- selling books including the modern classic Brixton Rock, and the multi–award winning Crongton series. FLC F19 C Akashic 1-2.indd 2 3/28/19 10:59 AM A very serious family book about not laughing at farting. Kids had better not laugh at this book. Are you laughing!? Quit it!

Thank you for taking this time to make farts a serious family discussion. This is a family book that will illustrate situations for kids where farting is absolutely NOT FUNNY. Guided by the parental voice of the narrator, we are asked to take farts seriously. Farts are not funny in the library, while visiting Granny, and they are definitely not funny while riding a roller coaster. This is serious. If you feel the subject of this book might make you laugh, then you’re the wrong family for it. We’re very serious about that. No laughing.

FLC F19 C Cassava Republic 7-8.indd 8 3/28/19 10:59 AM Ebba has never even seen the sun but now must reunite four sacred amulets to save the earth from destruction.

On the brink of execution in Cape Town, South Africa in 2055, sixteen- year-old Ebba is unexpectedly elevated from the bunker deep in Table Mountain where she has lived all her life, believing that the world “Above” is uninhabitable. Instead, she is heiress to a massive fortune and a direct descendant of the goddess, who has bequeathed her a mission to save the earth. Despite the machinations of the High Priest, his handsome son Hal, and the rules and regulations of a society and religion she doesn’t understand, she must try and save her friends, still stuck in the bunker and facing execution any day. Young and naive, Ebba is given enormous wealth and social power in a world best understood through mythology and the occult. Combining elements of the past and projecting into an unknown future, Helen Brain’s ecofeminist trilogy is a powerful commentary on how class, race, and social identity are foundational to the ways in which society is organized and power wielded.

FLC F19 C Catalyst 9-10.indd 10 3/28/19 10:58 AM Pray you never find your Summerwood, Grandfather had said. I’d found something worse. I’d found his.

In Summerwood, twelve-year old Rosalind Hero Cheung can’t wait to spend the summer in Toronto with her teenaged sister Julie and their famous author grandfather. Years ago Walter Denison wrote a series of bestselling children’s novels about a magical land called the Summerwood. But to Hero’s dismay, Walter is cold toward his granddaughters and Julie derides Hero’s hope that the Summerwood is real. Nevertheless one day she and Julie stumble into the Summerwood. Ruled by the beautiful and enigmatic Lady of Summer, it is the idyllic fantasy land out of Walter’s books, complete with quaintly dressed talking animals. However, Hero discovers the Summerwood is far more sinister than Walter had ever let on. Julie is abducted and to save her life, Hero must find the Summerwood’s sacred winter stag. Hero quickly learns that setting out on a fantasy quest is far more prosaic—and terrifying—than she’d ever imagined, and there is a steep and bloody price to pay for being the hero. In Winterwood, three years have passed since Lindy Cheung went into the Summerwood and emerged changed and broken. Now she’s getting into trouble—starting fights, skipping school, dating unsuitable boys. After Summerwood/ her mother grounds her—again—she runs off to Toronto to her sister, Winterwood the only person who knows what really happened three years ago. But E. L. Chen Juliet has moved on from the trauma, and Lindy finds herself back in the Summerwood, where an old enemy tells her: The stag must die again. And this time, in order to save the Summerwood, she has to be the bad guy instead of the hero. The dots form the back of a ladybird, the bubbles in a cup of soda, and the water in a swimming pool. The final page is gatefolded to reveal a magnificent pull-out for the last two numbers. FLC F19 C Enchanted Lion 23-30.indd 25 3/28/19 10:55 AM Surreal, playful poems from Norway’s greatest poet-artist collaboration ever! What could be better for children, who are naturally the freest and most universal of creators?

Following last season’s Little Parsley, this new poetry volume by Inger Hagerup was first published in Norway in 1971. At the time, it was a literary scandal for offering free verse to children, who were best suited, as the critics claimed, to the orderly rhymes of established poetic forms. Time and the inherently free and wild forms of youthful imagination have proven the critics completely wrong. Gorgeously illustrated by Paul René Gauguin, grandson of the famous Paul Gauguin, with his most antic line, as well as hand lettered, and playfully translated by Becky L. Crook, this collection of Hagerup poems is pure pleasure.

Great Expectations for Middle Graders by debut author Erin Yun.

Life is full of great expectations for Korean American Pippa Park. It seems like everyone, from her family to the other kids at school, has a plan for how her life should look. So when Pippa gets a surprising basketball scholarship to Lakeview Private, she jumps at the chance to reinvent herself. Pippa struggles with popularity and the pressure to perform academically and athletically while keeping her past and family’s laundromat a secret from her elite new classmates. Juggling jealous Queen Bees, old and new friends, and an unrequited crush is hard enough. But when Pippa begins to receive a string of hateful, anonymous messages via social media, things begin to spiral out of control. With pressure mounting, Pippa discovers the real reason she was admitted to Lakeview Private, and wonders if she can keep her old and new lives separate.

Erin Yun grew up in Frisco, Texas and received her BFA in English from New York Pippa Park Raises University. “When I came to Milwaukee, on my first day of school, a teacher said, ‘You came here, you have opportunities. You can do whatever you want.’ They asked, ‘What will you be in the future?’ I thought for a while, and decided to become a doctor. In my home country, a lot of people died when we lived in the camps. There was not enough water or enough food. A lot of people died from diseases . . . That’s why I decided to be a doctor. And that is why I am studying hard in school.” —Aziz Kamal, Myanmar (Rohingya)

FLC F19 C Haymarket 45-46.indd 46 3/28/19 10:53 AM Some heroes aren’t really that brave, nor all that smart. Some heroes are hobgoblins who smell like a fart.

Set in the faraway (and terrible-smelling) land of Rancidia, where it’s good to smell bad and bad to smell good, this uproarious send-up of Snow White follows the adventures of the profoundly stinky Hobgoblin as he flees the jealous wrath of a democracy-hating ogre named Fiddlefart. Book One of the Hazy Fables series of early chapter books, Hobgoblin and The Seven Stinkers of Rancidia modernizes (and stinks up) the themes of a classic fairytale to deliver a timely story of the virtues of equality and the evils of self-absorbed tyrants.

FLC F19 C Hazy Dell 47-48.indd 48 3/28/19 10:53 AM An award-winning debut that explores the unlikely relationship between two boys—one Jewish, the other a member of the Hitler Youth—on the eve of Kristallnach in prewar Germany.

What if the person you are supposed to hate turns out to be the person who can save your life? With one being Jewish and the other being a member of the Jungvolk (Hitler Youth), twelve-year olds Emil Rosen and Friedrich Weber would appear to be natural enemies. Despite their opposing backgrounds, they must both deal with the changes steamrolling through Germany in the summer of 1938. Friedrich struggles with a cruel new Jungvolk leader and an uncle in jail for espousing anti-Nazi ideas, while Emil does his best to avoid the increasingly vitriolic anti-semitism which is threatening him and his family. As the rules of yesterday begin to no longer make sense, both boys find comfort at a private spot along the Leine River. Then in the late hours of November 9th, 1938, their world unravels as the nightmare of Kristallnacht explodes onto the streets. With everything now at stake, the two boys are forced together in a race against time as Friedrich risks his life to save Emil and his family. Crushing the Red Flowers The story of how two ordinary boys cope under extraordinary Jennifer Voigt Kaplan circumstances, Crushing the Red Flowers offers a moving take on the meaning of heroism, sacrifice and friendship.

Jennifer Voigt Kaplan Crushing the Red Flowers is ’s debut novel. The Mother of the Sea is an important character in Inuit traditional stories shared across the circumpolar region. She is a powerful woman who can withhold the animals that humans need to survive if she is displeased. Only a shaman is able to appease her and convince her to release the animals that hunters desperately need. This version of the tale shares the traditional story of the Mother of the Sea that has been told and retold in Greenland for generations.

FLC F19 C Inhabit 53-58.indd 58 3/28/19 11:09 AM The true, graphic novel memoir of Kim Hyun Sook, who risked her family, freedom, and future to pursue forbidden knowledge in the shadow of a repressive regime.

It’s 1983 in South Korea. Army General Chun Doo-hwan has been the county’s dictator for three years, following his 1980 coup d’etat and brutal subjugation of the Gwangju Uprising. And nineteen-year-old Kim Hyun Sook, the only daughter of restaurateurs, has just begun college. Urged to stay out of politics and student activism by her worried parents, Hyun Sook is nevertheless drawn into dangerous campus protests, where the handsome young editor of the school newspaper invites her to a book club meeting. As a student of Western Literature, she expects Moby Dick, Hamlet, and The Scarlet Letter; instead, she finds herself inducted as the youngest member of an underground banned book club. Will she and her new friends stay clear of Chun’s secret police? Or will this clandestine collection of defiant college kids get disappeared, like so many before them? A true-life memoir by the woman who lived it.

This is authorKim Hyun Sook’s first book, and it will be her only book. Scout Montana is Shadoweyes, hero of Dranac. The festering, futuristic city is overrun with gangs, violence, and crime, and when her mysterious shapeshifting powers first manifested, the teenaged Scout was eager to put them to good use, fighting back against her hometown’s urban decay. But that was before she became stuck in her new, monstrous form. Before the city’s worst terrors began kidnapping her friends, and ambushing them in the street. Before she saw how terrible the people of the town she loved could really, truly be. Trapped in an alien body she has no control over and traumatized by what she’s seen and done, how will Shadoweyes pull Dranac back from the brink? Is it even worth saving, anymore? The final installment in the two-part series.

FLC F19 C Leapfrog 69-70.indd 70 3/28/19 11:07 AM A new Hanukkah classic and introduction for kids to the Holocaust.

Theodore Bikel was an admired actor, folk singer, musician, composer, unionist, and political activist. He appeared in numerous Hollywood films, and in 1959 he co-founded the Newport Folk Festival. A seasoned Broadway actor and singer, Bikel starred as Tevye in the musical, Fiddler on the Roof, a role he performed more often than any other actor to date. In 2014, at the age of ninety, Bikel was invited by Moment Magazine to write a Hanukkah story, and he chose to explore a crucial event that shaped his development as an author, actor, and activist. He captured these memories in a poignant story, The City of Light, set in Vienna in 1937–1938 during Nazi Germany’s annexation of Austria and Kristallnacht, “The Night of Broken Glass.” In this story, a young Jewish boy strolls through Vienna and witnesses acts of anti-Semitism during the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah. At night he dreams of a superhero, Judah Maccabee, who appears to defend Vienna’s Jews. When he awakes, he knows there will be no Maccabean rescue, and he weeps. Years pass, the boy, now an old man, returns to Vienna and sees the Jewish community and the Temple have been restored. He looks for the eternal light in his Temple and can’t find it. Then suddenly it becomes clear to him: “The light was there all the time, it was in his own heart.” In December 2014, The City of Light appeared in Moment Magazine and was read aloud on NPR’s Hanukkah Lights by hosts Susan Stamberg and Murray Horwitz. It now appears for the first time as an illustrated book in time for Hanukkah 2019 and can now be read and appreciated by all readers, The City of Light ages 10 and up in a new and expanded version with a glossary and foreword Theodore Bikel by Aimee Ginsburg Bikel.
