E-mail: [email protected] The shell sculpture and morphology of the radula and gizzard plates of juvenile specimens of Scaphander punctostriatus from the Russian part of the Barents Sea is described for the first time and compared with those of adult specimens; the shell morphology is discussed and il- lustrated for the first time. This article deals specifically with African discoveries 24 and excludes nearby Madagascar. African discoveries have ranged from the cedar forests of 25 northern Algeria, site of the discovery of the Algerian Nuthatch 26 27 (above), all the way south to the east coast of South Africa. 28 29 ome of the recent bird discoveries in Africa have come case, of their discoverer. Poppe INTRODUCTION The publication of Philippine Marine Mollusks, Volumes 1 to 4 has been a revelation to the conchological community. Apart from being the delight of collectors, the PMM started a new way of layout and publishing - followed today by many authors. Internet technology has allowed more than 50 experts worldwide to work on the collection that forms the base of the 4 PMM books. This expertise, together with modern means of identification has allowed a quality in determinations which is unique in books covering a geographical area. Our Volume 1 was published only 9 years ago: in 2008. Since that time “a lot” has changed. Finally, after almost two decades, the digital world has been embraced by the scientific community, and a new generation of young scientists appeared, well acquainted with text processors, internet communication and digital photographic skills. Museums all over the planet start putting the holotypes online – a still ongoing process – which saves taxonomists from huge confusion and “guessing” about how animals look like. Initiatives as Biodiversity Heritage Library made accessible huge libraries to many thousands of biologists who, without that, were not able to publish properly. The process of all these technological revolutions is ongoing and improves taxonomy and nomenclature in a way which is unprecedented. All this caused an acceleration in the nomenclatural field: both in quantity and in quality of expertise and fieldwork. The above changes are not without huge problematics. Many studies are carried out on the wide diversity of these problems and even books are written on the subject. -

The present collation is based on this previous account, on the copy in my library and the copy in the Museum of Comparative Zoology. It appears that some of the published parts were later canceUed by the publisher, as they were subsequently completely rewritten and do not seem to have been inchided with subscriptions to the work begun after 1890. None of Africa’s hornbills are currently considered to be at significant risk of extinction by IUCN, and none are listed under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). However, there is evidence for serious declines of African forest hornbills due to habitat loss and fragmentation, and to unsustainable exploitation for bushmeat. In addition, this paper documents a previously unreported international trade involving importation of African hornbills and their parts into the United States. In the absence of CITES reporting requirements, it is difficult to estimate the magnitude of this trade, but it appears to represent an additional threat to African hornbills, particularly large forest-dwelling species of the genera Bycanistes and Ceratogymna. Given this international trade, and other known threats to African forest-dwelling hornbills, the status of these species is in urgent need of review. Some of these species are very common and numerous, while others are naturally rare. However, environmental disorders through human impacts have produced more species in the rare category. In Akwa Ibom State, the existence of several species such as Necrosyrtes monachus, Malimbus scutatus, Tockus fasciatus, Scopus umbretta, Psittacus erithacus and some species of woodpeckers (Dendropicos and Campethera species), is on edge. The forcing factors in this decline include scarcity of preferred substrates for nest building, competitive exclusion, likelihood of toxic effects, local and international trades in some species, poaching of eggs for ritual purpose, and outright killings for meat. Birds are useful as indicators of environmental change and many people derive aesthetic satisfaction by watching them in-situ in aerial displays. The success of some terrestrial mammals depends on the efforts of birds in creating cavities in living trees or snags, which they share with the mammals. The extinction of such birds would certainly lead to collateral extinctions of some bird-dependent mammals. Keywords: Environmental Disturbances, Declining Avian Densities, Akwa Ibom.
