$1 Million Gold Cup Tops NYRA Fall Schedule $1 Million Gold Cup Tops NYRA Fall Schedule By Blood-Horse Staff The New York Racing Association, Inc. has released the stakes schedules for the 2012 Belmont Park and Aqueduct Racetrack fall meets that will be highlighted by the $1 million TVG Jockey Club Gold Cup (gr. I). The 37-day Belmont fall meet runs from Sept. 8-Oct. 28 and Aqueduct’s meet begins Nov. 2 and concludes Dec. 31, for a 39-day meet. The purse for the Gold Cup, one of five grade I races on the Sept. 29 race card at Belmont, was increased this year from $750,000. In addition to the 1 1/4-mile Gold Cup for older males, additional grade I races that day are the $600,000 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational for turf routers, $600,000 Flower Bowl Invitational for filly and mare turf routers, $400,000 Beldame Invitational for filly and mare dirt routers, and the $400,000 Vosburgh Invitational for dirt sprinters. Also on Sept. 29 is the grade II, $400,000 Kelso Handicap for dirt milers. The Belmont stakes schedule consists of 21 graded stakes and 10 other stakes and includes 11 Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win and You’re In” events, with the winners receiving an automatic starting position in the corresponding World Championships race. Challenge race winners will also have their pre-entry and entry fees paid, with a travel allowance of $10,000 for North American runners and $20,000 for international runners when they start in the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. The grade I stakes offerings for the Belmont fall meet begin with the $300,000 Garden City for 3-year-old fillies Sept. 15. On Oct. 6, juvenile males compete in the $400,000 Foxwoods Champagne (gr. I) at a mile on the main track, while 2-year-old fillies will also race a mile in the $400,000 Frizette (gr. I). That day’s trio of grade I races is completed by the $400,000 Jamaica for 3-year-old routers on the turf. Among additions to the Belmont fall meet are the grade II, $200,000 Futurity for 2-year- olds going six furlongs on the dirt and the grade II, $200,000 Matron for 2-year-old fillies. Both races, which were run during the Belmont spring meet in 2011, will be contested on Sept. 30. New York breds will be featured on the “New York Showcase Day” card Oct. 20. The seven stakes races for New York breds with purses totaling $1.15 million are highlighted by the $250,000 Empire Classic for dirt routers. The Aqueduct fall meet features 11 graded stakes, highlighted by the grade I, $350,000 Cigar Mile on Nov. 24. The supporting card for the Cigar Mile includes the grade I, $350,000 Gazelle for filly dirt routers, the grade II, $250,000 Remsen for 2-year-old dirt routers, and the grade II, $250,000 Demoiselle for 2-year-old filly dirt routers. Additions to the Aqueduct fall stakes schedule include the grade II, $200,000 Nashua for juveniles going a mile on dirt and the grade III, $150,000 Tempted for juvenile fillies. Both races, which were run during the Belmont fall meet in 2011, are scheduled for Nov. 4. 2012 DATE RACE GRADE AGE DISTANCE PURSE BELMONT FALL MEETING Sat.,Sept., 8 Bowling Green (Hdcp.) • Domino by Kathleen Jones
Domino by Kathleen Jones Domino was an amazing phenomenon in the annals of American thoroughbred breeding. He exists in the pedigrees of perhaps half of the recent stakes winners in this country, yet that he appears in any is a miracle. But we are getting ahead of ourselves. Domino was dark brown colt with a peculiar coat which appeared to change color depending on in which light it was viewed. (The coat of Equipoise, Domino's great grandson, was similar in nature.) On cloudy days, his coat was dark as coal, yet in bright sunlight, people would swear they had seen a chestnut horse. He was known by several racing nicknames including "the brown phenomenon" and "the black whirlwind". He was foaled at Major Barak Thomas' Dixiana Farm, a son of the speedy Himyar, and the stakes producing mare Mannie Gray. He was his dam's ninth foal, and she had already produced the good runners TEN STRIKE (by Ten Broeck), BANDALA (by King Ban), and the great handicap mare CORRECTION (by Himyar) for whom the present-day Correction Handicap is named. Domino was a beautiful specimen of a horse, and Thomas sent him to the Tattersall's yearling sales with high expectations. For a sale in which the average selling price was $895, Domino fetched an eye-popping $3000 (the second top price of the sale). The new owner was Foxhall Keene. Keene placed the colt in the capable hands of African-American yearling-handler Albert Cooper, who broke and trained the young horses for the Keenes. The colt worked a quarter mile at Coney Island in such fast time that Cooper was certain his watch had malfunctioned.

  • Man O' War by Kathleen Jones
Man o' War by Kathleen Jones There is very little one can say about Man o' War which has not already been said, but it would be unconscionable to remain silent in regards to the most beloved figure in American racing history. Man o' War was the second foal of his dam, the first having been a full sister named Masda. Masda was a stakes winner but is probably more important as the third dam of Triple Crown winner, Assault. Man o' War's dam, Mahubah was sometimes referred to as "Fair Play's wife" as she produced foals only to that stallion. Man o' War was born a few minutes before midnight, on March 29, and quickly grew into a big horse of great power. His chestnut coat and imposing presence earned him the nickname "Big Red." When his trainer, Louis Reustel, first laid eyes on him as a yearling, he described him as "very tall, gangly and thin. So leggy as to give the same impression one gets when seeing a week-old foal." Perhaps not the powerhouse as a yearling that he would be later in life, he sold at Saratoga's yearling sale in August 1918 for $5000. Man o' War debuted at Belmont Park on June 6th, 1919, in a purse race against six other contenders. He won easily by 6 lengths. Three days later, he stepped up to stakes company and dusted five others in the Keene Memorial Stakes. Rested for eleven days, he reappeared to win the Youthful Stakes at Jamaica Park. Then, two days after that, was showed up at Aqueduct where he was entered in the Hudson Stakes.
