ANDREW THE APOSTLE THOUGHTS BY REV KEV The first idea is that the celebration here in America dates back nearly 400 years, but some West Texans claim that a Spanish explorer Juan de Onate celebrated the first Thanksgiving on April 30, 1598 after surviving a trip across a desert. He ordered a day of giving Thanks –including Mass.

The pilgrim governor organized the first Thanksgiving feast in 1621. And George Washington on his way to Valley Forge ordered his men to stop in a wintery/snow covered plain to give thanks. Later in his presidency George Washing- ton ordered the first National Thanksgiving in 1789 and then again in 1795. It was president Lincoln who established Thanksgiving on the last Thursday in November and in 1941 Congress officially set the date for Thanksgiving as the 4th Thursday in November.

The strangest thing about all of this is that as Catholic Christians, we have been celebrating Thanksgiving from the time of the Last Supper and on a weekly basis, if not daily, for most of you present here today, since the Mass, or more properly the Eucharist (the Greek work for Thanksgiving) is an important part of our spiritual lives, and if that was not enough, the children of God have been giving Thanks from the very beginning. In the first reading for Sirach (50:22-24) we are told to bless the God of all, who has done wondrous things on earth and that His goodness may endure to deliver us in our days. In the Gospel from Luke (17:11-19) we have the story of the Samaritan who came back to Thank God in a loud voice where the other nine did not and even though I truly believe that Jesus was not an “Indian Giver” the im- portant thing to keep in mind is that it is our faith that truly saves us and for that we should be grateful.

So with these thoughts in mind, let us continue to do what comes natural to us and give thanks to Almighty God for all the good that we have received and all the difficulties that we have survived with his graced presence.

May the Good Lord give you his Peace!

Ruminations by: Fr. Pat

Concerning our ongoing reflections, I think that I will start to focus on the Mass. There is a great deal of information that can be shared, so I think I am going to steer us in this direction. Before we start on the Mass, let’s look at one important aspect of Mass: Prayer. We Pray the Mass, or we pray at Mass. What is prayer? The Catechism tells us that “Prayer is the raising of one's mind and heart to God or the requesting of good things from God (2559)." However, prayer is more a disposition than an action. The Catechism also tells us: Pray- er is “a vital and personal relationship with the living God…the living relationship of the children of God with their Fa- ther” (2558, 2565).

We may think of prayer as an action verb. We say prayers. We live prayer. It is an action verb because we do say words and we do live a life. But prayer is foremost a relationship with God, a deep and personal one. As an incomplete exam- ple, think of family or coworkers. There is a relationship of some sort. That relationship defines how we live with them. Yes, we talk to them or with them. Yes, we cooperate with them or avoid them. There is an interaction with them. In some way, shape, or form, there is communication. The same concept applies to God, but at a much deeper level. It goes beyond just living with someone or working with someone. It goes beyond just communicating with someone. For the sake of argument, let’s use molecular level. Prayer involves believing, firstly, that God exists, and that He is a personal being, a person who can be addressed and who re- sponds. We must believe that God knows us, cares for us and loves us – even more than we ourselves. If it is not, then it is just a social type of relationship, one that is not part and parcel to who we are.

St. Thérèse of Lisieux said “For me, prayer is a surge of the heart; it is a simple look turned toward heaven, it is a cry of recognition and of love, embracing both trial and joy.” To pray the Mass, to actually say the words, means that God is a part of us. It is the Raison D'être. “I pray not only for them, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, so that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me (John 17:20-21).” OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE NOVEMBER 22, 2020 Christmas Flower Memorials—2020

As we continue to face the ongoing Coronavirus Pandemic, please take a moment to review the steps taken by St. Andrew the Apostle Parish.

These are the protocols mandated by the CDC, Commonwealth of PA, and the Diocese of Pittsburgh: All individuals who enter the Church for any reason (such as private prayer, the Celebrations of Mass or Confession), MUST WEAR A MASK, covering their nose and mouth. Masks are available at all entrances. All are asked to PLEASE USE HAND SANITIZER upon entering the church building. All are asked to be attentive to the seating restrictions, sitting at least 6 feet from anyone else in the pew, the exception being that you can sit in closer proximity to the people you came with (i.e. spouses, family members, etc.). We are allowed to seat 50% of our seating capacity. Be attentive to those pews taped off.

Additional steps we are facilitating here at St. Andrew the Apostle: We have instituted Pandemic Porters, who help the parish ensure Safety Compliance and Accountability. All clergy have been wearing masks to distribute Communion. While you may exit the church by any door, you will find that each church will only have ONE set of doors opened: Charleroi - please use the main doors with the handicap ramp. PLEASE Monongahela - please use the side door with the handicap ramp. IF YOU FEEL SICK, Donora - please use the front door of the Church. WE ASK THAT YOU STAY AT HOME. To assist in the safety of everyone in the congregation, if you choose to receive Holy Communion on the tongue, please wait until everyone in the Congregation has received Communion. Afterward, you may come to the priest or deacon so that he may sanitize properly. PLEASE WHEN LEAVING USE ALL DOORS, AND DO NOT CONGREGATE!! Finally, we are still providing an Online Mass for the Weekend, as noted in the bulletin. Check the parish website at https:// saintandrewmidmon.org. For indeed those who desire eternal rewards must only consider usefulness and use. Use of life must be moderated just as toil must be moderated, since this is true discretion, that the possibility of spiritual progress may be kept with a temperance that punishes the flesh. For if temperance exceeds measure, it will be a vice and not a virtue; for virtue maintains and retains many goods. Therefore we must fast daily, just as we must feed daily; and while we must eat daily, we must gratify the body more poorly and sparingly -St. Columbanus of Ireland On Monday 11/23, the Church celebrates another little known but incredibly influential saint. St. Columbanus of Ireland was a monastic founder and missionary known for founding a number of monasteries in Europe. He was born in 540, the year that St. Benedict died, and as a child showed an incredible intellect and devotion. After entering a monastery in Ireland, Columbanus gathered 12 followers and set out to evangelize the rest of Ireland and Europe. He wrote a rule of life for his monks and moved into an abandoned Roman fortress in the south of France. The community became a popular site and attracted so many monastic vocations that he needed to build two more monasteries to house them all. Columbanus was a headstrong, stubborn and determined man who called his monks to a strict life. The influence that Columbanus had on the Church is still seen today. Columbanus is one of the first advocates of private confession, with penance levied by the priest. Before this, confession was a public event, and penance was often a form of public mortification. St. Columbanus wanted to bring a greater intimacy to the sacrament, through him and his Irish monastics we got the modern day confessional. Columbanus’ monasteries were known as “nurseries of saints and mystics”. St. Columbanus is still very much venerated in Ireland and throughout the Church Universal. Family Connection

In today’s Gospel, Jesus teaches us that we will be judged on only one thing: the acts of mercy we have shown to the least among us. Jesus identifies with the least ones; thus we serve Jesus whenever we serve one of the least ones. The Church calls the actions that Jesus described in today’s Gospel the Corporal Works of Mercy. These works are to feed the hungry, to clothe the naked, to bury the dead, to shelter the homeless, to visit the sick and imprisoned, and to give alms to the poor. In these actions we show God’s compassion and mercy to those in need. ST. ANDREW THE APOSTLE
