Correction in numbers for Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser Committee leaders Angie DeRienzo, Elanie Pappasergi, Carolyn Valkanas and Johnna Pro and their team of volunteers sold 590 dinners in total, yielding $5,805. Coupled with what was raised in raffle ($400) and half the take ($465) profits, the event brought in $6,670. VOLUNTEER UPDATE While most of our volunteer opportunities have been suspended to the current pandemic, we hope to get these activities started back up as soon as possible. If you are a volunteer at the parish, please consider keeping your volunteer file up to date. You may be able to volunteer sooner than you think! With Fish Fry take out, festival of nations and other activities planned you will need to be compliant to help. Please call Helena at the Monon- gahela Office or Deacon Al to find out what you will need to do to become compliant. Your time and talents are appreciated and greatly needed. Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults Each year, Instruction is held for those who would like to learn more about the Catholic faith or begin their Journey to become Catholic. Our Parish of St Andrew the Apostle will begin instruction in October 2020. We are asking those who may be interested in taking the classes to further your knowledge of our Faith, or begin their Journey to join the Catholic faith, to begin discerning in prayer of how God maybe placing a call on your heart and how you can respond to the Catholic Faith. ANDREW THE APOSTLE THOUGHTS BY REV KEV The first idea is that the celebration here in America dates back nearly 400 years, but some West Texans claim that a Spanish explorer Juan de Onate celebrated the first Thanksgiving on April 30, 1598 after surviving a trip across a desert. He ordered a day of giving Thanks –including Mass. The pilgrim governor organized the first Thanksgiving feast in 1621. And George Washington on his way to Valley Forge ordered his men to stop in a wintery/snow covered plain to give thanks. Later in his presidency George Washing- ton ordered the first National Thanksgiving in 1789 and then again in 1795. It was president Lincoln who established Thanksgiving on the last Thursday in November and in 1941 Congress officially set the date for Thanksgiving as the 4th Thursday in November. The strangest thing about all of this is that as Catholic Christians, we have been celebrating Thanksgiving from the time of the Last Supper and on a weekly basis, if not daily, for most of you present here today, since the Mass, or more properly the Eucharist (the Greek work for Thanksgiving) is an important part of our spiritual lives, and if that was not enough, the children of God have been giving Thanks from the very beginning.
