February is the month of LOVE and there is plenty to love in Linedancer this month. First of all, discover 14 brand new dances fresh from their CBA outing. We are spoiling you this year with choreographies from names like Alison and Peter, Yvonne Anderson, Kate Sala, Rachael McEnaney, Ria Vos and many, many more. If anyone should doubt the level of talent that Line dance choreographers possess, let them look at these scripts!

Talking of the CBA, our first eight page photo report is in this issue. You can live and relive some of the highlights of this ‘event of events’ and if you are thinking of joining the Safari madness in 2015, book now before it’s sold out. All details are in this issue.

With the LDF day looming large, Linedancer is proud to introduce the national LDF dance of 2014. I am sure you will agree that this year’s dance has a terrific tune written by Rick Guard and performed by the talented Phil Redmond as well as a fabulous dance from multi CBA winner Pat Stott. We predict a big hit. You can download the music from the main website and all proceeds to go to the LDF, a very worthy cause.

We continue our new Spotlight section with Peter Jones and Anna Lockwood and invite you to try out four scripts they have selected themselves. The only way for newcomers to get noticed is to get dancers to try their choreographies. As most dancers welcome a little change now and then, Spotlight is the ideal opportunity for everyone to do something different. So why not help them help you and add them to your favourites today.

Your new edition of Linedancer is also packed with features, fun and news, making Linedancer Magazine YOUR favourite magazine!

A very successful Line dance charity night was held in Kirkliston, West Lothian, Scotland between Christmas and New Year. The evening was run by Patrice Reid (in the red top centre back) and Rep Ghazali (front left) in aid of the ITU Unit Family Room at St. John’s Hospital in Livingston. (In memory of Stefan Wozniak). Patrice told us: “We run a charity night every month in Kirkliston in aid of many local and national charities, which is open to dancers and non-dancers alike and all the money we take over the door and for raffl es is donated to charity. Kirkliston Bowling Club kindly let us use the venue free of charge which is a great boost to the funds we raise. The ever generous dancers and friends raised a fabulous £950 and everyone had a great night.”

Margaret Adams holds Line dance classes in Sunderland, in August last year she held a charity Line dance event in aid of the North West Air Ambulance. She says: “It was an all day event, Andrea Atkinson from Benidorm, a great friend of mine, came over to do the workshop, it was fun all around. The picture is of a few of my Line dancer’s with me holding the cheque. We managed to raise £338. I am really looking forward to this August when I will be holding another Line dance charity event in aid of the Neonatal Unit at Sunderland hospital. Andrea will be coming once again from Benidorm and mad Lizzie Clarke will be coming too, so it will be a crazy day.” If you would like more details, contact Margaret, email: [email protected]

East Coast Liners and 50+ Fitness raised £273 from their Christmas raffl e for Alzheimers Research UK at their Christmas Line dance party held at Carlton Colville Community Centre, Hall Road, Lowestoft last December. “Another fun night after a super fun year,” Norma Read told us.

“Eastbourne in December may not be everybody’s idea of fun but for those Line dancers who follow Teresa and Vera’s classes in Essex then Eastbourne is defi nitely a hot item for the festive season, David Binks told us. “Teresa and Vera promised the dancers, friends and relatives a weekend to remember, with not only their own dances being played amongst the latest choices but with the added promise of guest choreographers who were Neville Fitzgerald and Julie Harris. To see them joining in the festive fun dressed as Santa Claus and a snowman respectively, along with the plethora of costumes from the rest of the assembled throng, was just marvellous. The dances they taught that weekend will be chart bound no doubt.”

“Peter and Alison held a wonderful weekend at Street at the beginning of December 2013 with guest choreographer Craig Bennett,” Stacy Drye stated. “There were some fabulous dances taught over the course of the weekend. Peter and Alison taught the brilliant Timber, which should become a massive hit, Don’t Say Goodbye, Hit The Road Jack and Bonfi re Heart. Craig taught Do What You Want, The Story of My Life and Paradise City which was co-choreographed with Kate Sala. The theme for the weekend was ‘Christmas’ and on the Saturday evening there were many people dressed as Christmas trees, complete with baubles and lights, also many Christmas jumpers, elves, hats and tinsel! We also had the wonderful talent that is Richard Palmer providing two great sets and entertaining us with songs to dances old and new and even Alison joined in with the singing! I would like to give a special mention to Janne, Marit and Hanne (pictured) who travelled all the way from Oslo to join us. That made them the most dedicated dancers of the weekend! Well done for a lovely weekend as always.”

Sandy from Step-In-Line in Israel shares her December 2013 celebrations. “In Sunny Israel, where the sky is blue and the sun is hot, we, the Jewish people, celebrate for eight days and nights, the Festival of Lights, known as Chanucah (ha- noo-ka). The word Chanucah means ‘dedication’, which reminds us that this holiday commemorates the re-dedication of the holy Temple in Jerusalem following the Jewish victory over the Syrian-Greeks in 165 B.C.E. During Chanucah we light a candelabrum with eight candleholders and a ninth candleholder set a little above the others, known as a Chanuciah (ha-noo-keeya). According to the Chanucah story, once Jewish revolutionaries had re-taken the Temple from the Syrians they wanted to re-dedicate it to God and restore its ritual purity. Eight days worth of oil were needed to complete the ritual purifi cation, but they were only able to fi nd one day’s worth. They lit the Chanuciah anyway and miraculously the oil lasted for eight full days. One candle is lit the fi rst night, two the second, and so on, until tall candles are lit. Each of the candles is lit with a ‘helper’ candle, known as Shamash. The Shamash is lit fi rst, lit with all my dancers. Then I realised I had left it back home! Devasted, then used to light the other candles, and then is returned to the ninth how would we do the special prayers for this Festival of Lights? Then I candle spot, which is set apart from the others. The fi rst night Chanucah had an idea... use a human Chanuciah out of dancers. So I am proud fell last December was on my class night in Netanya, Central Israel. After to share this picture of my unique ‘Step-In Line Chanuciah’. The main setting up my equipment, I wanted to display my Chanuciah ready to be candle standing on the chair is my youngest son, Tomy.”

Dancer and choreographer, Meeco Muraguchi from Japan kindly sent this photo of Osaka City at Christmas time. she says: “Christmas time is so busy here with all the Christmas parties and Music Concerts. New Year’s Eve is so quiet.”

Christmas splashed its colours deeply across Maureen and Michelle’s Line dance classes, in the last days before Christmas, as dancers celebrated the Festive season with style and arrived at classes dressed as Santas, Elves and reindeers plus a variety of outfi ts in red! Santa hats twirled across the dance fl oor accompanied by ‘Santa’s Little Helpers’ with their own unique Elf hats, plus hilarious headgear refl ecting the laughter and enjoyment of the Christmas season. Mounds of party food and gifts plus dozens of Christmas cards sending out festive wishes, completed the fun-fi lled celebrations. Dancers left The Girls’ classes not only invigorated by their Line dancing but also with a surplus of Christmas spirit that was guaranteed to last the whole of the festive season!

Here are the Silver Eagles pictured at their Christmas dance held at the ‘Nova’ Prestatyn. Dorothy Evans says: “We donated £300 to the Special Care Baby Unit at Glan Clwyd hospital. This brought the total donated to the unit by our dancers to £21,011. We also donated £380 to Oxfam.”

Sandra Williams told Linedancer about Merv and Maria’s Christmas break. “My friend Ros and I have just been for our Christmas treat to ourselves, a long weekend at Mundesley on a Merv and Maria Christmas break and as usual it was excellent in every way! Good value for money, good food, friends, a large dance fl oor and most importantly good music. Easy Line dancing was taught in the mornings by Sara and then we were away for the rest of the day and night with only time for a quick shower, change of clothes and a meal. We didn’t leave the ballroom and became a permanent fi xture. Personal favourites of mine were an excellent set by Speed Limit and Dave Sheriff, who even obliged by singing ‘The Matador’ for us few die hard Line dancers with a good memory. Gary Perkins and The Breeze never fail to entertain and were brilliant, the festive Christmas hats and glasses just topped it all off. We even managed to get a few more readers for Linedancer. It was a real family event organised by Merv and his wife, Maria and her husband Fergus with their little daughter Millie, many thanks for all the hard work involved, the break for 2014 is already booked and to all readers “keep dancing”.

Safari CBA 2015.indd 1 30/01/2014 13:35 MAGIC! The 18th Crystal Boot Awards weekend will go down in history as a truly astounding event, designed to dazzle, bewitch and enchant those who were there or watched it online.

With a theme like ‘Magic!’ the Linedancer team had to excel themselves and their quest to organise the best CBA to “boot” was not an easy one to realise.

However they knew they could count on one thing to help them. The people who were there!

The atmosphere at a CBA is unlike anything else, palpable from the moment people step in the hotel.

Some dancers wait for a whole year before meeting up again at the CBA and all you can hear are cries of delights and laughs as one party arrives after another.

However grey the skies may have been outside, the sun shone inside the Norbreck. A great way to start.

There were a few surprises this year and some tweaks and changes to make this event, in its eighteenth year, even better than years gone by.

Did we succeed in making this CBA a magical weekend? The next few pages are testimony of what went on.

We will have a full report next month … but for now, let us relive a little of the amazing Blackpool magic!

Vanessa Coombe, a ‘child’ of 40 years old, had her story too. She was a special girl who was bullied at school, she had no self-esteem and no confi dence. She had also lost her father at a very young age. Vanessa would not go out or socialise in any way. At 30 years old she was virtually a recluse and her sister tells me that Line dance changed her whole life. Vanessa was an uncomplicated, gentle soul who took a beginner class under the direction of Margaret and Tony. Dance Therese, Elsa and Vanessa was her life and once she felt the fl oor she never looked back. Vanessa had loads of patience and took a small class on a Tuesday evening. She used to raise money for her local church and also collected pennies in a jar and counted that in too. We started taking ‘remedial’ lessons with Vanessa.

Sadly Vanessa died nine months after we started classes with her. The Tuesday evening hall slot Vanessa used, was quite reasonably priced and our kitchens at home were too small to dance in, so Elsa and I kept the Tuesday slot booked for the two of us to practice our dancing. Papillon dancers Elsa would put some music on and I would try to work out the dances from step sheets.

First up in any job 1. Always have every track requested I never want to say that I don’t have a particular track. you need some basic So although it is an impossible goal, I do really still try to have every track that is requested. Internet access and operating principles? single track downloading makes this much easier now. The number of dances released and the speed with which Some golden rules to they are taken up makes this an ever increasing challenge, likewise the national and regional variations as to which follow. Here are fi ve of dances become popular. I do try my hardest though and I DJ Dave Baycroft’s am always disappointed with myself if I have to admit defeat by not having a requested piece of music. Another very important reason for being prepared in advance is that I check the rhythm so I can call a fl oor-split if own and it is these needed and the beginning so I can count it in. There is of course no shame however in asking the dancers if principles that make they can help me with a track, many carry their favourite music us all different - for with them on memory sticks or iPhones these days and I’m not too proud to ask! better or for worse! 2. Assume that everyone is NOT happy out there I try my hardest to please all of the people all of the time even though I know that I can’t but if I try I know I’m doing my best. It adds some unnecessary stress maybe but it works for me. Some events are more diverse than others but whatever the crowd there will almost always be many more requests than there is time for! I’m constantly shuffl ing the requests and looking around the room to check on dancers on and off the fl oor to ensure that all have as fair an amount of dancing time as possible. There are lots of ways of getting requests which I’ll explore another time, but for now enough to say that what I do is look out for who might not be happy and look after them as best I can. And as one track goes on, the challenge is on for what to play next! So I never relax and just assume that everyone is okay and happy, even though I hope that they are of course! I am also always aware and careful that I must not be biased towards any one group of dancers because I want everyone present at an event to feel that they are getting a fair and good

I also always try to be positive and respectful to all choreographers, all dances, all levels and types of dances. 4. Never have a silence... The show must go on! What I like or dislike is completely irrelevant. I also take great I always try to be ready at the DJ station for whatever is coming care not to openly rate dances as being at a certain level so as up next. There is nothing worse than stopping and starting the not to embarrass any dancers, for example, “easy this”, “simple fl ow of a session or unplanned and uncomfortable pauses or that”, “for the beginners” or “for the Country fans”. 1125505 Shoes.indd 2 30/01/2014 14:16 Another year, another CBA closes its doors. WOW! What an event this year was. I would go as far as to say that EVEN if you weren’t a Line dancer you’d find something to love! It is always difficult to be constructive and objective when you talk about your very own event but the fact that so many of you keep wanting to come back is enough of an accolade. Most of you know we are a very small team here and the planning of a CBA event can seem sometimes overwhelming. After all, we have to better last year EACH time and that is no easy challenge, believe me. We want to ensure everyone there gets real value for money. But we, at Linedancer, also believe everyone should get a chance of going to the Crystal Boot Awards weekend and that is why the webcast is getting more and more important to us and to you too. Not everyone can travel or can afford to be with us but for only a few dollars, pounds or euros, anyone can follow what is happening live online. This trend was started out a couple of years ago by our web supremo, Paul Swift and it is proving more and more popular each CBA. We particularly love the thought of clubs joining in with their very own versions of CBA celebrations. Some of them even dress up for the evening for a slap up meal and sit back, relaxed and watch the Awards show. If you have a computer, a dance hall with WIFI and a large screen, it is probable that you too could hook up for the cost of just one pass and organise your own social weekend around our live webcast. This, to us, is really something. Line dance is one of those truly international hobbies where one dance, if it is popular, will be known from Paris to Shanghai. That means that everyone who is interested in Line dance knows what is going on. We are a huge family but a family nevertheless. And everyone knows everyone. So, if you intend to be part of the CBA next year, why not think about it now. Get organised, talk to your dance friends and book them in, get someone who is in the know to rig it all up, sell your tickets now. You’ll be glad you did. You will be able to hop from workshop to workshop during the day, sit down for a fantastic show during the evening and have fun with us all weekend long! It may even be that you can use your CBA event as a great charity social. We promise you one thing, if you can make that happen, the CBA will be an international gathering of the very best that is Line dance. And ultimately our goal of relevance, glamour and excitement will be shared by thousands across the globe.
