Each left her country when the Nazis took power. Gerti Deutsch Gerti Deutsch, Oskar Kokoschka, Salzburg 1958 escaped Vienna for London in 1936, two years before Austria was annexed by the Germans. Jeanne Mandello had already fled Frankfurt in 1934, heading first for Paris and then for Montevideo in Uruguay. Gerti Deutsch: Vienna 1908 – 1979 London Born in 1908 and raised in the heart of Vienna, she trained as a photographer in 1933 – 1935 at the Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt in her native town. Austrofascism had already curtailed the liberal lifestyle and its propaganda proclaimed a visual aesthetic in photography that glorified the homeland. Gerti Deutsch, on the other hand, preferred everyday motifs that were at odds with this norm, such as her high-angle shot of people waiting at a provincial railway station (1930s), and the diagonals that were a hallmark of modern photography. In 1936 she left Vienna for London, where her principal client until 1950 was the liberal, anti-fascist “Picture Post”, founded by Stefan Lorant in 1938.     media release Contact Communications Team 212.857.0045 or [email protected] The International Center of Photography Mexican Suitcase Catalogue Earns Top AAM Design Award Publication awarded the Frances Smyth-Ravenel Prize for Excellence in Publication Design New York, NY (July 7, 2011) — The Mexican Suitcase catalogue, which accompanied the exhibition on view at the International Center of Photography from September 24, 2010–May 8, 2011, has been recognized by the American Association of Museums (AAM) in its 2011 Museum Publications Design Competition. The publication was awarded the Frances Smyth-Ravenel Prize for Excellence in Publication Design. AAM honorees were selected from hundreds of entrants in the fields of exhibit design, publications, technological achievement, and more. Considered lost since 1939, the so-called Mexican Suitcase is in fact three boxes containing 4,500 negatives documenting the Spanish Civil War by Robert Capa, Chim (David Seymour), and Gerda Taro. There are also several rolls of portraits of Capa and Taro by Fred Stein. Besides offering new images by these major photographers that provide a comprehensive overview of the war, the cache of negatives also includes previously unknown portraits of Ernest Hemingway, Federico Garcia Lorca, and Dolores Ibarruri (known as “La Pasionaria”). “Capa, Chim, and Taro risked their lives to witness history in the making and show it to the world, and the Mexican Suitcase contains some of their most important works. Its recovery set in motion a profound shift in the study of these three photographers,” said ICP Assistant Curator Cynthia Young, who edited The Mexican Suitcase and organized the exhibition.

    THE HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY The Research Library of the Mack Lee Gallery 2,633 titles in circa 3,140 volumes Lee Gallery Photography Research Library Comprising over 3,100 volumes of monographs, exhibition catalogues and periodicals, the Lee Gallery Photography Research Library provides an overview of the history of photography, with a focus on the nineteenth century, in particular on the first three decades after the invention photography. Strengths of the Lee Library include American, British, and French photography and photographers. The publications on French 19th- century material (numbering well over 100), include many uncommon specialized catalogues from French regional museums and galleries, on the major photographers of the time, such as Eugène Atget, Daguerre, Gustave Le Gray, Charles Marville, Félix Nadar, Charles Nègre, and others. In addition, it is noteworthy that the library includes many small exhibition catalogues, which are often the only publication on specific photographers’ work, providing invaluable research material. The major developments and evolutions in the history of photography are covered, including numerous titles on the pioneers of photography and photographic processes such as daguerreotypes, calotypes, and the invention of negative-positive photography. The Lee Gallery Library has great depth in the Pictorialist Photography aesthetic movement, the Photo- Secession and the circle of Alfred Stieglitz, as evidenced by the numerous titles on American photography of the early 20th-century. This is supplemented by concentrations of books on the photography of the American Civil War and the exploration of the American West. Photojournalism is also well represented, from war documentary to Farm Security Administration and LIFE photography.

    PROVING THAT ROBERT CAPA’S “FALLING SOLDIER” IS AUTHENTIC by Richard Whelan Copyright © 2003 by Richard Whelan Robert Capa photographs copyright © by Cornell Capa An earlier version of this article appeared in APERTURE magazine, No. 166, Spring 2002 The evidence surrounding Robert Capa’s great photograph of a Spanish Loyalist militiaman collapsing into death, the so-called Falling Soldier, continues to refute all the allegations of fakery brought against it. In 1996 there came reason to hope that the allegations would finally stop altogether, as in that year the information was published that Spanish amateur historian Mario Brotóns Jordá had identified the man in the photograph as one Federico Borrell García, who had been killed in the battle at Cerro Muriano on September 5, 1936, the place and date of Capa’s photograph. Alas, the controversy proved to have taken on a life of its own, per- versely resistant to the preponderance of evidence in favor of the photograph’s authenticity. The latest doubts that can now be dispelled were raised in the past year by a writer named Alex Kershaw, who in his book about Capa relates that the director of the Spanish government’s civil war archives in Salamanca denies both that Borrell’s name is recorded in his archive and that Brotóns ever visited the archive. What Kershaw failed to take into account, however, is that Mario Brotóns had himself fought in the battle at Cerro Muriano on September 5, 1936, and therefore knew first-hand that Federico Borrell García was killed there that day. The allegation that Capa’s photograph was staged first surfaced in 1975, in a book entitled The First Casualty: From the Crimea to Vietnam; The War Correspondent as Hero, Propagandist, and Myth Maker by Phillip Knightley, a British journalist.

The first section of this study deals with the practices of posing in early photography, with chapters on the daguerreotype, the carte de visite, and the amateur snapshot photograph. Considering technological advances in conjunction with prevailing cultural mores and aesthetic practices, this section traces the changing cultural meaning of the portrait photograph, the obsolescence of the pose, and the emergence of an “unposed” aesthetic in photography. The second section of this study examines three key photographers and their strategies of photographic representation, all of which involved candid photography: it looks at Erich Salomon’s pioneering photojournalism, Humphrey Spender’s politicized sociological photography, and Walker Evans’ complex maneuvering of the documentary form. Here, the emphasis is on the ways in which the trope of the candid informed these three distinct spheres of photography in the early 20th century, and the ways in which the photographic aesthetic of candor cohered with—or contested—political and cultural developments of the interwar period in Germany, Britain, and the United States.

The World Health Organization believed that educating people, as well as informing them about the health situation around the world, could assist in the enduring fight against disease. Yet in an increas- ingly competitive media landscape, the agency recognized the need to persuade people and hold their attention through attractive presentation. Public information, the name given to the multiple strategies used to communicate with the public, was rarely straightforward and required the agency not only to monitor the impact of its own efforts but also to identify opportunities to further enhance its reputation, especially when this was in danger of damage or misappropriation. The WHO’s understanding of public information provides insights into the development of international information, communication, and education networks and prac- tices after 1945, as well as the increasingly central position of these processes in generating support for and evincing the value of international organizations.
