The famous image reportedly depicts the death of Spanish Loyalist militiaman Frederico Borrell Garcia as he is struck in the chest by a Nationalist bullet on a barren Iberian hillside. Capa was known to say, "If your pictures aren't good enough, you aren't close enough." On D-Day, he came close once again.

  • On Photography, History, and Memory in Spain Hispanic Issues on Line Debates 3 (2011)
2 Remembering Capa, Spain and the Legacy of Gerda Taro, 1936–1937 Hanno Hardt Press photographs are the public memory of their times; their presence in the public sphere has contributed significantly to the pictures in our heads on which we rely for a better understanding of the world. Some photographs have a special appeal, or an extraordinary power, which makes them icons of a particular era. They stand for social or political events and evoke the spirit of a period in history. They also help define our attitudes towards people or nations and, therefore, are important sources of emotional and intellectual power. War photography, in particular, renders imagery of this kind and easily becomes a source of propaganda as well. The Spanish Civil War (1936–39) was the European testing ground for new weapons strategies by the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany. Both aided their respective sides in the struggle between a Popular Front government— supported mainly by left-wing parties, workers, and an educated middle class—and “Nationalist” forces supported by conservative interests, the military, clergy, and landowners. The conflict resulted in about 500,000 deaths, thousands of exiles, and in a dictatorship that lasted until Franco’s death in 1975. It was a time when large-scale antifascist movements such as the Republican army, the International Brigades, the Workers’ Party of Marxist Unification, and anarchist militias (the Iron Column) united in their struggle against the military rebellion led by Francisco Franco. Foreigners joined the International Brigade, organized in their respective units, e.g., the Lincoln Battalion (USA), the British Battalion (UK), the Dabrowski Battalion (Poland), the Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion (Canada), and the Naftali Botwin Company (Poland and Spain, including a Jewish unit).

J A C K S O N F I N E A R T ATLANTA Jackson Fine Art Media contact: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE [email protected] BRUCE DAVIDSON In Color & The Brooklyn Gang Friday, May 15 — Saturday, August 1, 2015 Opening Reception Friday, May 15th, 6-8 pm Artist Talk Saturday, May 16th at 11 am My way of working is to enter an unknown world, explore it over a period of time, and learn from it. -Bruce Davidson Jackson Fine Art is pleased to start off the summer with two exhibitions by Bruce Davidson, one of the most celebrated and influential photographers of the 20th century. Since Henri Cartier- Bresson invited him to join the Magnum Photos agency in 1958, Davidson has established a reputation for his ability to engage his subjects, often concentrating on people on the outskirts or those explicitly concerned with redefining boundaries. On Friday, May 15th, from 6-8pm, Bruce joins us in opening a selection of work from 1959’s The Brooklyn Gang, as well as an exhibition of his highly anticipated color work, which spans over fifty years. On Saturday, May 16th, at 11am, Davidson gives an artist talk at the gallery; space is limited. In 1959, Bruce Davidson read about the teenage gangs of New York City. When a social worker facilitated his introduction to Brooklyn gang The Jokers, he began to document their daily lives. Davidson was just 25 when he began to photograph The Jokers, and could have easily been mistaken for one of them. This blurring of the distinction between photographer and subjects allowed for an intimate and dynamic series; we see the gang in times of post-war rebellion and iconic cool, but Davidson also captures the haunting restlessness and tragedy that marked many of their lives.

It was out of love for the actress Ingrid Bergman that Robert Capa took Magnum’s very first photo of cinema, on the set of Alfred Hitchcock’s Notorious, inaugurating the relationship between the agency and the world of films. Using original, unseen stories and interviews, Cinema Through the Eye of Magnum depicts this relationship over 70 years. It is a confrontation of two seemingly opposite worlds: fiction and reality, and a unique look behind the scenes of cinema in the making. From the Golden Age of Hollywood to its eventual decline, Europe’s Nouvelle Vague to the birth of the blockbuster, the story of Magnum is the story of cinema itself.

media release Contact Communications Team 212.857.0045 or [email protected] The International Center of Photography Mexican Suitcase Catalogue Earns Top AAM Design Award Publication awarded the Frances Smyth-Ravenel Prize for Excellence in Publication Design New York, NY (July 7, 2011) — The Mexican Suitcase catalogue, which accompanied the exhibition on view at the International Center of Photography from September 24, 2010–May 8, 2011, has been recognized by the American Association of Museums (AAM) in its 2011 Museum Publications Design Competition. The publication was awarded the Frances Smyth-Ravenel Prize for Excellence in Publication Design. AAM honorees were selected from hundreds of entrants in the fields of exhibit design, publications, technological achievement, and more. Considered lost since 1939, the so-called Mexican Suitcase is in fact three boxes containing 4,500 negatives documenting the Spanish Civil War by Robert Capa, Chim (David Seymour), and Gerda Taro. There are also several rolls of portraits of Capa and Taro by Fred Stein. Besides offering new images by these major photographers that provide a comprehensive overview of the war, the cache of negatives also includes previously unknown portraits of Ernest Hemingway, Federico Garcia Lorca, and Dolores Ibarruri (known as “La Pasionaria”). “Capa, Chim, and Taro risked their lives to witness history in the making and show it to the world, and the Mexican Suitcase contains some of their most important works. Its recovery set in motion a profound shift in the study of these three photographers,” said ICP Assistant Curator Cynthia Young, who edited The Mexican Suitcase and organized the exhibition.
