It has been suggested that there be a defibrillator available in the Village, any thoughts on this, if it were to go ahead, the most likely place it would be installed would be on the outside wall of the Social Club .Any comments to any Parish Councillor or the Parish Clerk-see Information Page in this Newsletter.

Noticeboard

While the majority of our community lives in Runcton Holme, the Parish Council exists to serve a much wider area including South Runcton, Runcton Bottom and a few homes in between. We try to keep everyone informed and involved with a team of volunteer’s hand delivering this newsletter to all the homes in the area, by keeping our website up to date and of course, anyone is welcome to come to the monthly meetings, whether just to listen or to raise issues of concern. Notice Boards in Runcton Holme are also well used and at recent meetings we have discussed whether this would be something we should also have in South Runcton and Runcton Bottom. While they are not expensive, notice boards would need to be safely accessible, regularly maintained and above all used - not easy when there are no footpaths and the area is divided by a busy A10! Please let us know if you think additional notice boards are needed and if so, where would be a useful location - email [email protected], talk to one of the Parish Councilors, or come to our next meeting at the Parish Hall on Tuesday 5th June at 7.30pm. The teddy’s go the hospital and police, to help unhappy children. We meet at 16 Warren Close, Watlington on the third Monday in the month 2pm to 4pm, everyone welcome. Janet Jones 01553 810868

RECIPE for:BARA BRITH

12oz mixed dried fruit 8oz light muscovado sugar ½ pint black, strong, hot, strained tea Butter for greasing 10oz SR flour 1 egg beaten 2lb loaf tin

1. Combine the dried fruit, sugar and hot tea in a large bowl. Stir the mixture, then cover and leave to steep for at least 8 hours. 2. Lightly butter the loaf tin and line the bottom with greaseproof paper. Stir the egg and the flour into the dried fruit, sugar and tea mixture, mixing thoroughly. Turn the mixture into the loaf tin and level the surface 3. Bake in a preheated oven at 150 C for 1½ hours until well risen and firm to the touch, a fine skewer inserted into the middle should come out clean. 4. Leave to cool in the tin for about 10minutes, then turn out on to a wire rack and peel off the lining paper. Leave to cool completely. Serve sliced and buttered if wished.

Mixed dried fruit is steeped in strong tea so that it is moist and well plumped up by the time the Bara Brith is mixed.

The mixture may be divided into two 1lb tins. One loaf to eat and one to freeze.

(3) NEWS FROM THE MEDICAL CENTRE

As summer approaches and the hayfever season kicks in, there will be increasing requests for anti-histamines and eye drops to alleviate the symptoms. Many of you will have noticed the Department of Health and Social Care Guidance that recommends patients purchase their own medications for minor illnesses, such as hayfever, headaches, diarrhoea, constipation and so on. We all realise that the NHS is underfunded and that it cannot pay for everything, however, there will be some patients who either need their medication long term, or do not have the money to buy their own minor illness medication and for those patients, we at Watlington, will continue to supply these medications. We are lucky that we have a pharmacy attached to our surgery and patients are thus able to obtain many of these medications over the counter from the pharmacy. This is not always the case for rural general practices, as doctors are not allowed to sell their own patients any medication besides malaria prophylaxis and travel vaccines. We are members of the Dispensing Doctors’ Association, who are lobbying the Department of Health and Social Care and MPs to change the regulations and allow GPs to sell medications for minor illnesses to their patients. This may help make a small dent in the NHS funding crisis. After 35 years, our stalwart Dispensary Manager, Jacky Wardale is taking her well-earned retirement. She has seen many changes in the dispensary, from the cupboard we used to dispense from at the Thieves Bridge Road Surgery, through the dispensary at the new surgery and the extension to that and finally the installation of our robot which helps us process more than 15000 items a month. I personally will miss Jacky, as when she goes, I will have no staff who were present before I joined the practice in 1990. Thank you, Jacky. Dr Buckland is taking her well-earned sabbatical and will be back at the surgery as the autumn approaches. I hope you all have a wonderful summer and respect the sun – take sensible precautions and as they advise in Australia, Slip, Slap, Slop – use sun protection.

Watlington WI

Roll Up! Roll Up! Ready to have fun at the Fete. Saturday 16 June – 11am to 4pm

Watlington WI will be having a stall so you can find out the sort of things we do – other than knitting and jam making!! In addition to our regular meetings we host several workshops during the year where we get hands on experience in various crafts and activities many that you may not have tried before. We also like to party in style. There will be information about the many other activities that we get involved with including community activities, craft group and book club. Come and meet with members, take the opportunity to satisfy your curiosity about just what the WI is all about. Our membership comes from several nearby villages, some of which used to have a WI of their own so don’t think you have to live in Watlington to join. We also boast a varied age group which adds to the diversity of our meetings. You only have to be 18 to join.

The WI programme for 2018 is complete and will be put onto the Watlington Norfolk website, as soon as possible. www.watlingtonnorfolk.co.uk – Women’s Institute. Why not check us out. Why not ring Marion, our Secretary, on 01553 810407 and come along to see what we do.

Brenda Leedell Vice President Watlington WI I was amused by the comment at the end of an interview in the WI magazine, WI Life, which comes free with your membership: “I joined the WI because it was something my husband wasn’t eligible for! We’ve got lots of similar interests and I thought it would be healthy for me to do something he couldn’t”. I hadn’t thought of that.

The Pulpit Originally sermons were delivered from in front of the altar and then from the west end of the Chancel until Pulpits were used. Early pulpits were of oak and very small. Perhaps priests were a lot smaller in those days. Preaching was quite general in the 15th century and in 1603 church wardens were ordered to provide pulpits in all churches. Jacobean pulpits were carved and richly decorated and had sounding-boards to project the preachers voice to the back of the church. In the 17th and 18th centuries when pews with high backs and galleries to accommodate larger congregations were installed, the three-decker pulpit was introduced. The clerk used the lowest part, the reader the next level and the top level was for the preacher. Three-decker pulpits are now quite rare. The Jacobean Pulpit in St James’ was originally from All Saints Church, Kings Lynn. Formerly the pulpit was a Three-decker with typical Jacobean panels, the carving depicting curving thistle stems complete with leaves and flowers make this a very attractive design. The sounding board or tester(wooden canopy) is supported by a backboard with carved dolphins “with open mouths as if speaking to the seamen of the port of Lynn”. The Parish Clerk’s desk also with the thistle design can be found behind the Screen in the Chancel. Do come and visit our village church – a Grade 1 listed building.
