Dates: 1958-2006
Extent: 58 boxes (8 metres)
Scope and Content: This collection, the first accession of David Laidler’s papers by the Thomas Fisher Library, consists of the bulk of papers related to Laidler’s professional life. It includes original manuscripts of his numerous published works, primarily his academic writing for a variety of economic journals and conferences, as well as book reviews and his journalism work. It also consists of the manuscripts for two of Laidler’s books: Monetarist Perspectives (Harvard University Press, 1982) and Fabricating the Keynesian Revolution (Cambridge University Press, 1999). Drafts of his unpublished articles and working papers are also represented. The collection also contains a large volume of correspondence, both professional and personal, between Laidler and other economists, including refereeing comments on his and the work of other economists. Also in the collection are scrapbooks containing both clippings and letters.
Biographical Sketch: David Laidler, currently Professor Emeritus at the University of Western Ontario (UWO) in London, Ont., is considered one of the foremost thinkers in macroeconomics and the history of economic thought, and has been a major player in the development of the monetarist tradition in economics.
Born in England in 1938, he was educated at the London School of Economics, the University of Syracuse and the University of Chicago, where he obtained his Ph.D. in 1964. Prior to joining the UWO faculty in 1975, he held full-time academic appointments at the London School of Economics (assistant lecturer 1960-1961), the University of California at Berkeley (assistant professor 1963-1966), the University of Essex (lecturer 1966-1969), and the University of Manchester (professor 1969-1975). In 1998 and 1999, he was Visiting Economist and Special Adviser at the Bank of Canada. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1981 and served as president of the Canadian Economics Association in 1987-88. He also currently serves as a fellow at the C.D. Howe Institute.
