SUMMER SCHOOL SALONICA FRONT: A FORGOTTEN FRONT OF THE GREAT WAR (1915-1918) UNIVERSITY OF MACEDONIA (28/8-3/9/2016) AIMS Following the international conference “The Salonica Front in World War I” http://www.hist.auth.gr/en/macedonianfrontconference the University of Macedonia, in cooperation with the French School at Athens is conducting a summer seminar on the subject of the Macedonian Front and its contribution to the final victory by the British and French forces and their allies against the Central Powers. Having the formation of the Macedonian Front as a pivot point, the aim of this seminar is to educate young researchers and scholars on issues regarding the following wide range of topics: the development of military operations, the ordinary life of the troops in the camps in Thessaloniki and near the Front, relations between the troops and the local populations, the war and civilians (recruitment of war by local populations and their attitudes towards the Great Powers in Conflict),the urban environment under conditions of military readiness, the wider works of the British and the French in the region of Macedonia in terms of infrastructure and contingency plans (e.g. the fire in 1917),their contribution to the local economies, how “hostile’ activities were dealt with (for example Thessaloniki as a centre for espionage etc.),military actions taken (the evacuation of areas and the transfer of populations, the recruitment of civilians for projects of military importance etc.),the legacy of war. Simultaneously, a comparison will be made of the conditions of the Macedonian Front with other Fronts, including military operations, as well as the German and Bulgarian occupation during the World War II in the same area (1941-1944). The further aims of the seminar are: a) To motivate young researchers into choosing and developing postgraduate and doctoral theses on topics related to the First World War in the wider Balkan region. Thus, within this context, emphasis is given to historiography and its sources; b) To familiarize young researchers with the historical evidence and the sites of memory of the war, i.e., with the cemeteries and memorials of the First World War in Thessaloniki and Macedonia in general, so as to bridge the historical narrative with the material dimension: the public space and the monuments of WWI; c) By extension, to enhance the cooperation of the University of Macedonia with other research institutions and universities in both Greece and abroad in the field of history and the promotion of historical memory; d) To establish a research community within the country which will engage in short-term discourse with the respective thematic communities in the Balkans and the rest of Europe. WHO CAN APPLY The seminar is aimed at undergraduate and graduate students of the Humanities and Social Sciences, and more particularly at students of History, Social Anthropology, International Relations, Political Science, as well as students engaged in area studies, such as Balkan Studies, Mediterranean Studies, Slavic studies and studies of countries in the Middle East.
