Deans Works Casualties Gunner Peter Neilson, Royal Garrison Artillery, was the youngest son of James Neilson, a Shale Miner, and Ann Neilson (nee Scott), of 91 Niddry Rows, Kirkliston. He worked as a Shale Miner and was married to Janet Elizabeth Neilson, who subsequently lived at 8 Newton Street, Gorgie Road, Edinburgh. He was born in Penicuik and died on 1 April, 1917, age 31. Surviving siblings were James, Euphemia, Richard and Jane. Gunner James Wallace, Royal Garrison Artillery, was the eldest son of John Wallace, a Shale Miner, and Margaret Wallace, of Galahill Cottage, Livingston Station, Mid Calder, Midlothian. He was born in Burntisland, was gassed and died on 14 September, 1918, age 30. His younger brother, Gunner Joseph Wallace, Royal Garrison Artillery, was born at West Calder, was gassed at the same time and died on 14 September, 1918, age 26. Surviving siblings were John, Margaret, Charles and Ann. Private James Anderson, Royal Scots Fusiliers, was the second son of George Anderson, a Shale Miner, and Isabella Anderson, of 26 Deans Rows, Bathgate. He was born in Bathgate and died on 31 July, 1917, age 21. Surviving siblings were Alexander, Jane and George. Rifleman Robert McIlhagga, Royal Irish Rifles, was the son of Daniel McIlhagga, a Shale Miner, of 104 Main Street, Livingston Station, Mid Calder. He was born in Ballyportrey, County Antrim and died on 4 September, 1917, age 25 Corporal James Purdie, Royal Army Service Corps, was the second son of John Purdie, a Shale Miner, and Mary Purdie, of 16 Main Street, Livingston Station, Mid Calder. He was born in Kirknewton and died on 19 December, 1917, age 27. Surviving siblings were Alexander, Jane, Agnes, Mathieson and Margaret. Corporal Purdie had been married to Jeannie Schenk (formerly Purdie), of Vancouver, Washington, USA. Private John Roberts, Highland Light Infantry, was the only son of Edward Roberts, a Shale Oil Works Manager, and Louisa Roberts, of Dean Bank, Livingston, Mid Calder. He was born in Mid Calder and died on 7 September, 1917, age 24. Surviving sister was Margaret. Private George Ferguson, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, was the fourth son of Robert Ferguson, an Oil Works labourer, and Mary Ferguson, of 9 Stewartfield, Uphall. He was born in Kirknewton and died on 31 July, 1917, age 27. Surviving siblings were William, John, Robert, Mary, Sarah, Samuel, Euphemia and Jane. His widow lived at Balwherrie Cottage, Leswalt, Stranraer, Wigtownshire. Private Walter Scott Telford, Scots Guards, was the fourth son of Walter Scott Telford, a Shale Miner, and Isabella Telford, of 48 Elm Road, Livingston. He was born in Tarbrax and died on 20 August, 1917, age 23. Surviving siblings were John, David, Nellie, George, Mary, Isabella and Robert. Sergeant Hugh Neilson, MM, Middlesex Regiment, was the third son of James Neilson, a Fruit Storeman, and Margaret Neilson, of Flowerhill Street, Airdrie. He was born in Airdrie and died on 23 November, 1918, age 26. Surviving brothers were James, John, Peter and Alexander. Sergeant Neilson was married to Margaret Neilson, of Wester Dechmont, Uphall, West Lothian. Private Samuel Walker, Gordon Highlanders, was the youngest son of Charles Walker, an Engine Fitter, and Christina Walker, of 28 Mid Street, Livingston Station, Mid Calder. He was born in Dunblane and died on 17 June, 1916, age 20, Surviving siblings were Andrew, William, John and David. Private John Noon, Royal Scots, was the only son of Thomas Noon, a Mason, and Bridget Noon, of Inveralmond, Mid Calder. He was born in Mid Calder and died on 27 September, 1915, age 34. Surviving sisters were Catherine, Mary and Jemima. Private Samuel Johnston, Highland Light, was the younger son of John Johnston, a Shale Mine Manager, and Grace Johnston, of Burnside Cottage, Deans, Bathgate. He was born in Mid Calder and died on 6 September, 1915, age 22. Surviving siblings were Jessie, Isabella, Grace, William, Elspeth and Cecilia. Private Archibald Cathie, Scottish Horse, was the eldest son of John Cathie, an Agricultural Labourer, and Elizabeth Cathie, of Cannongate, Spott, East Lothian. He was born in Innerwick, East Lothian and died on 9 November, 1915, age 41. Surviving siblings were Margaret, Robert, Ewen, John, Helen, David, Elizabeth and Ann. Gunner Charles Gibb, Royal Field Artillery, was the elder son of Walter Gibb, a Ploughman, and Mary Gibb, of Mill Cottages, Mid Calder. He was born in Morningside, Edinburgh and died on 3 August, 1916, age 21. Surviving siblings were Robina and John. Private Richard Forrest, Gordon Highlanders, was the fourth son of Adam Forrest, an Oil Worker, and Jessie Forrest, of Inveralmond, Mid Calder. He was born in Mid Calder and died on 2 May, 1915, age 18. Surviving siblings were James, Andrew, Christine, Adam and Alexander. Corporal William Russell, Gordon Highlanders, was the younger son of Peter Russell, a Shale Miner, and Margaret Russell, of Main Road, Uphall. He was born in Uphall and died on 25 September, 1915, age 28. Surviving elder brother was Peter. Corporal Russell had been married to Elizabeth Hill Law (formerly Russell), of 8 South Richmond Street, Edinburgh. Private George McCann, Royal Scots, was the eldest son of John McCann, a Coal Miner, and Martha McCann, of 23 North Street, Livingston Station, Mid Calder. He was born at Addiewell, West Calder and died on 4 October, 1916, age 18. Surviving younger brothers were John and James. Private Robert Pollard, Scots Guards, was the son of Robert Pollard, a Shoemaker, and Elizabeth Pollard, of 32 Arley Terrace, Lodge Road, Armley, Leeds. He was born in Leeds and died on 26 October, 1914, age 24. Corporal Alexander Lothian, Royal Field Artillery, was the elder son of Mark Lothian, a Shale Miner, and Marion Lothian, of 31 Kinngscavil Rows, Linlithgow. He was born in Linlithgow, worked as a Shale Miner and died on 31 March, 1918, age 32. Surviving siblings were David and Marion. Second Lieutenant William Aiton, Rifle Brigade, was the second son of the Reverend Thomas Aiton, Church of Scotland Minister of Livingston Parish, and Jane Aiton, of Church of Scotland Manse, Livingston. He was born in Livingston and died on 1 March, 1918, age 28. Surviving siblings were Robert Scott, Jane Charteris, Agnes Hamilton, Marjorie and Adam Charteris. He was born in Edinburgh and died on 4 October, 1917, age 24. Surviving sister was Mary. Sergeant Henry Lumsden, Royal Field Artillery, was the eldest son of David Lumsden, a Coal Miner, and Annie King Lumsden, of Almond Lane, Blackburn, Bathgate. He was born in Loanhead and died on 3 November, 1918, age 24. Surviving younger brothers were Robert and James. Private John Fleming, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders), was the eldest son of John Fleming, a Shoemaker, and Jane Fleming, of 20 Academy Street, Bathgate.
