It’s In The Bag featured a luncheon, auction and vintage fashion presentation with historical stories of Sanibel. An assortment of handmade, vintage-style bags served as centerpieces; the bags were also sold, raising more than $1,000 toward the event’s total earnings. The museum’s 2013 fundraiser, It’s Paradise Because..., will be held on February 5, again at The Sanctuary. Low-maintenance sand cordgrass is a native bunch grass by Gerri Reaves SALE IN and cordgrass (Spartina bakeri) is a native grayish green bunch grass that PROGRESS looks best in the warm and wet season. Its native habitats range from dry prai- Sries to woodlands and marshes. Cattle graze on it, and the seeds are a food source for wildlife. Also called Baker’s cordgrass, marsh grass and switchgrass, it typically grows three to five feet high. In a mass planting, its ornamental assets can be appreciated, espe- cially when the sun glistens on its leaves. It is frequently planted along the edges of both brackish and freshwater ponds to prevent erosion. The leaves resemble coarse, ridged wires because the blade rolls inward when dry. That is the success story, but we still have a lot of education to do,” FWC Commission Chairman Kathy Barco said. “Everyone loves bears, but not everyone wants them in their backyard. When people call to say, The Old Captiva House is TripAdvisor’s top-rated ‘Relocate this bear,’ we need to help that neighborhood learn the ways to coexist with Captiva restaurant — and here are two more reasons the bear – take care of your garbage, dog food and bird feeders.” why. To find out more, go to www.MyFWC.com/Bear. Seven bear management units (BMUs) will be created, with each unit containing a geographically distinct bear subpopulation and a local advisory group of stakeholders interested in issues such as creating “Bear Smart” communities. The state’s largest land mammal is a subspecies of the American black bear and had been listed as a state-threatened species since 1974. Successful conservation of the Florida black bear was confirmed by the FWC’s 2011 Biological Status Review, which reported the bear to be no longer at high risk of extinction. While commissioners passed a rule to remove the black bear from the list of state- threatened species, they also adopted a separate new rule stating it is still illegal to injure or kill a bear in this state, or possess or sell bear parts. The public and stakeholder groups participated extensively in developing Florida’s bear management plan: • A diversity of stakeholders provided input into the original draft bear management plan released on November 10, 2011. • More than 550 public comments were received on the draft plan and revised draft plan, with a majority of suggestions used by the FWC to improve the plan. From page 1 Successful First Year Miracle Off To Promising Second Half Jim Rantz, the veteran director of the Minor Leagues for the Minnesota Twins, expected his Class A farm team, the Fort Myers Miracle, to make a strong showing this year in the Florida State League. But the team’s first-half season record of 28-39 – a fifth place finish in the league’s South Division – obviously did not live up to those expectations. The Miracle, however, were 6-5 in the second half as this week began after winning three straight last weekend, two over the Charlotte Stone Crabs and one over the St. Lucie Mets. St. Lucie ran away with the South Division title in the first half. The Miracle host St. Lucie this weekend at Hammond Stadium for three games. The 23-year-old Sale has a 9-2 record and an AL-leading 2.27 ERA. He was the 13th overall pick in the 2010 baseball draft and advanced swiftly through the White Sox Minor League system. He was called up by the White Sox in August 2010, barely two months after being drafted. He pitched as a reliever the first two seasons in the Majors, but was given a starting role this year. M.S.T. I don’t want to have these bad feelings between us, but I don’t need the lecturing either. Is there a way to shed some light on this situation? A: Sometimes by putting light on a situation that has turned ugly helps take the edge off. That is what humor therapy is all about. When we can separate ourselves from our problems, we can gain a much better perspective of it. Humor can help us to get to that perspective much quicker. One of the elements of humor is the art of exaggeration, and this technique is used by almost every stand-up comic. It seems that if we take things to the extreme, we can gain a proper prospec- tive on the truth, especially those embar- rassing moments where humor may be the only relief. In workshops, when I have discussed humor therapy, I have had par- ticipants write down what the worst pos- sible situation would look like by filling in the blank. You might want to try this with your step-father’s situation and see what you come up with. It doesn’t take long to realize by doing this, the situation doesn’t look so bad after all.
