CHAPTER • 9 Minnesota's Mineral Resources IN MINNESOTA the production of iron ore is far more valuable economically than the total of all other mineral products, but im portant industries are based on Minnesota's other geological forma tions as well. Architectural, monumental, and structural stone are produced from granite, limestone, dolomite, and other Minnesota rocks. Gravel and sand are excavated and processed, and clay is used for many ceramic products. :Manganese in important amounts occurs in the iron ores of the Cuyuna district. Finally, although they are often not thought of as mineral products, two of our most im portant mineral resources are water and soil. The iron ores and mining operations of the Mesabi, Vermilion, and Cuyuna iron-bearing districts and of the southeastern lYlinnesota counties will be discussed in detail in later chapters, but a few sta tistics on Minnesota's iron ore industry may remind us how impor tant this geological heritage is. The following is an estimate of Min nesota's iron ore reserves, made on lYlay 1, 1961: Gross Tons Mesabi Range 500,799,179 Vermilion Range 9,755,974 Cuyuna Range 36,530,000 Fillmore County 'il,860,337 Total iron ore 549,945,490 172 MI NESOTA'S MINERAL RESOURCES The total production of iron ore in Minne ota to January 1, 1962, was 2,529,737,553 tons. Total taxes paid on iron ore to January 1, 1961 , were approximately $1,257,448,400, a very important source of funds for the state government. Slightly over 60 per cent of the total iron ore produced in the United States has come from l\1inne- ota. -

Professor William W. Folwell, in the Council Meeting on May 14, 1906, read a paper entitled “A New View of the Sioux Treaties of 1851”; and in the Annual Meeting of the Society on January 13, 1908, he presented an address, “The Minnesota Constitutional Conventions of 1857.” These addresses are partially embodied in his admirable concise history, “Minnesota, the North Star State,” published in October, 1908, by the Houghton Mifflin Company as a volume of 382 pages in their series of American Commonwealths. -

No state M in the Upper Midwest surpasses Minnesota in terms of acreage and variety of tallgrass prairie protected. Over 45,000 acres of native prairie are protected on a wide variety of landforms that span the 400 mile length of the state from its southeast to northwest corner. -

The county, which covers approximately 30 miles south to north and approximately 18 miles east to west, borders the state of South Dakota to the west. The county is composed of 15 townships, five towns with populations over 100, and two unincorporated towns. The largest town in Lincoln County is Tyler, with a 2000 population of 1,218. Three other Minnesota counties border Lincoln: Yellow Medicine to the north, Lyon to the east, and Pipestone to the south. The nearest metropolitan area to Lincoln County is Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The county seat is Ivanhoe. Lincoln County’s total land area is 540 square miles, and water makes up about 10 square miles. This county is mainly an agricultural or rural county. Prior to settlement the county was a tall- and medium-grass prairie. Minnesota reported the coldest temperature in the 48 contiguous states thirteen times during the month, the highest frequency among all 48 states. Many northern observers saw overnight temperatures drop below -30 degrees F on several occasions. The mean monthly temperature for December from several communities ranked among the coldest Decembers ever. A sample listing includes: -4.1 F at International Falls, 2nd coldest all-time 4.6 F at Duluth, 8th coldest all-time 0.1 F at Crookston, 3rd coldest all-time -3.1 F at Roseau, 3rd coldest all-time 0.3 F at Park Rapids, 3rd coldest all-time -4.4 F at Embarrass, 2nd coldest all-time -4.1 F at Baudette, coldest all-time -3.7 F at Warroad, coldest all-time -2.9 F at Babbitt, coldest all-time -2.8 F at Gunflint Lake, coldest all-time In addition, some communities reported an exceptionally snowy month of December. -
