A Migration Story From Muslim Immigrants to European "Citizens of the Heart?"' BASSAM TIBI Although a newcomer with regard to migration of a global scope, Europe has become a popular destination for Muslim immigrants, taking in more Muslims than the U.S. in recent years. It is currently home to more than 20 million Muslims. However, despite their large numbers, these im- migrants are not integrated into European society. They are therefore sus- ceptible to the political Islam that is making Europe its battlefront. As the prominent New York Times journalist Richard Bernstein, who led the Berlin office of that paper for four years, wrote in his farewell col- umn, Europeans believe they live in a Tuscan paradise and hate to see the problems in the "world beyond." 2 Bernstein noted that this European senti- ment can be described as "wealthy, soignde, [and] ecologically correct" and that European opinion leaders believe they are "distant from vexing prob- lems like Muslim immigration."3 Stuck in this mindset, Europeans do not view themselves as confronted with what is perceived to be "Islam" or with its jihadist dimension. The perception that jihadist assaults by al-Qaeda on September 11, 2001 were the result of an unsettled score between the Arabs and the United States was belied by a consistent series of events in Europe ranging from attacks in Madrid on March 11, 2004 to the foiled plot in London in August 2006. Among other things, this means they do not send their children to a Jewish school and, if they are ill, do not go to the Jewish hospital. Close to half of the Jews live in Amsterdam and the adjacent southern suburb of Amstelveen. The immigration of Muslims and the rise of Islam in the Netherlands have created problems for the Jewish community and will continue to do so. There are about one million Muslims in the Netherlands. Their influence on the political system is increasing. This cannot be positive for the Jews. The more power the Muslim community gains, the more it will weaken the Jewish community’s relations with a number of ministries. The Jewish community faces increasing anti-Semitism. This has led to enhanced security measures. It also threatens to intensify attitudes based on fear. An important element in Dutch Jewish history over the past decade was the restitution negotiations. As a result, the Dutch government made a payment of 400 million guilders (180 million Euros) to the Dutch community. -

Maar ik, met sluimerend joods gevoel en eerste linkse sympathieën, was nieuwsgierig, wilde weten. Wat was dat voor een land? Wat waren dat voor mensen? Voelden ze zich schuldig of verantwoordelijk, of waren alle moffen beesten? De Berlijnse scholieren die ik in 1970 op een conferentie ontmoette, tijdens de naweeën van de grote studentenrevolte, intrigeerden me. Ze waren kritisch en politiek geëngageerd, in een mate en op een wijze die ik niet kende. Met sommigen raakte ik bevriend. Pas veel later viel te constateren dat ik, die niet joods was opgevoed behalve als het om de oorlog ging, juist in deze naoorlogse Duitse generatie veel herkende. Vanuit een totaal andere positie en gemoedstoestand waren ze op zoek naar het antwoord op dezelfde vraag: hoe heeft dit allemaal kunnen gebeuren? In het ziekenhuis in Berlijn, waar ik enige weken werkte, kreeg ik te maken met oudere verpleegsters. Ze waren vriendelijk en stijf, met knotjes op het hoofd. Het bleek dat sommigen onder hen weduwen waren, wier mannen gesneuveld waren aan het oostfront. Een keer kwam het gesprek op de oorlog. Wat Hitler met de joden gedaan heeft was vreselijk, maar de joden hadden het geld en de banken. -

CONTEMPORARY JEWISH ANTI-ISLAMISM: JEWISH ZIONISM AND JEWISH INFLUENCE IN WESTERN ANTI-ISLAMISM Ömer Kemal Buhari Independent Researcher, Istanbul-Turkey [email protected] https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2970-6985 Abstract The present academic literature hosts volumes of information on Muslim anti-Semitism, while Jewish anti-Islamism is hardly mentioned. With the aim of filling this scholarly gap, the article deals with contemporary Jewish anti-Islamism, principally focusing on Zionism’s role in such anti-Islamism, by delving into the existing literature, news media, and online sources. Since the very birth of Zionism, Palestinians, Arabs, Muslims and, finally, Islam itself have primarily been seen as “obstacles” to Zionist goals. The “chosenness,” “promised lands,” and “messianism” doctrines at the core of Zionism have led to the antagonization of the aforementioned. There appears to be a blatant overlap between anti-Islamism and Jewish voices in the media, the entertainment sector, popular bookshops, foundations, academia, think-tanks and the virtual world. Finally, pro-Israel influences in the West have catalyzed negativity about Islam and Muslims and propagated wars through lobbying activities. Jewish anti-Islamism is real and needs further scholarly investigation. Western Europe Great Britain National Affairs A,. DRAMATIC CHANGE of government and a major organizational re- structuring in the Jewish community were among the key events of late 1996 and 1997. In May 1997, 18 years of Tory rule ended with a spectacular defeat for the Con- servative Party and Prime Minister John Major. The Labor Party, headed by Tony Blair, came to power with 43.1 percent of the popular vote and an overall ma- jority of 177 seats in the House of Commons—the largest majority of any party in the postwar era. The Conservatives, who polled their smallest share of the vote since 1832 (31.4 percent), were left with 165 seats in the House. The center-left Liberal Democrats more than doubled their representation to 46 seats, all the gains being made at the expense of the Tories. The upset was predicted by the pollsters, all of whom up until the actual election gave Labor a lead of more than 15 points. The Tory defeat, coming at a time of falling unemployment and growing pros- perity, had little to do with economics. Obviously, after 18 years of Toryism, sen- timent favoring change was a strong factor. But this was powerfully reinforced by multiple examples of sleaze among Conservative MPs, deception of Parlia- ment by ministers, and above all, a perception that Premier John Major had traded national leadership for increasingly desperate attempts to maintain some sort of party unity between Europhiles and Europhobes in his cabinet. The Labor Party, by contrast, not only displayed a greater degree of skill in its presentation of policies but was also careful to promote an image that promised change, especially in respect to education and the national health service, while still pledging to remain within spending totals set by the Tories and not to raise the income tax. -
