Christ Psychology Department, Washington University, St. Louis, MO, USA ABSTRACT In 1921, Pearl S. Buck gave birth to a daughter, Carol, who became severely retarded and was eventually institutionalized at the Vineland Training School in New Jersey. To help pay for her daughter’s care, Buck wrote The Good Earth in 1931, and then other novels and biographies about her life in China, for which she was awarded the Nobel and Pulitzer Prizes, and honored around the world. Years later, she published The Child Who Never Grew, a short piece about her daughter’s retardation that also revealed her desperate search for answers and good clinical care. Asbjørn Følling distinguished phenylketonuria (PKU) from other forms of childhood retardation in the mid-1930s, and new assays and biochemical findings eventually led to ways to circumvent the devastating effects of PKU. But for Carol Buck, these advances came too late. It was not until the 1960s that physicians confirmed that her severe retardation was caused by PKU. Keywords: Pearl S. WILLIAMSON: Sentimental Appropriations: Contemporary Sympathy in the Novels of Grace Lumpkin, Josephine Johnson, John Steinbeck, Margaret Walker, Octavia Butler, and Toni Morrison (Under the direction of Linda Wagner-Martin) This project investigates the appearance of the nineteenth-century American sentimental mode in more recent literature, revealing that the cultural work of sentimentalism continues in the twentieth-century and beyond. By examining working-class literature that adopts the rhetoric of “feeling right” in order to promote a proletarian ideology as well as neo-slave narratives that wrestle with the legacy of slavery, this study explores the ways contemporary authors engage with familiar sentimental tropes and ideals. Despite modernism’s influential assertion that sentimentalism portrays emotion that lacks reality or depth, narrative claims to feeling— particularly those based in common and recognizable forms of suffering—remain popular. It seems clear that such authors as Grace Lumpkin, Josephine Johnson, John Steinbeck, Margaret Walker, Octavia Butler, and Toni Morrison apply the rhetorical methods of sentimentalism to the cultural struggles of their age. Contemporary authors self-consciously struggle with sentimentalism’s gender, class, and race ideals; however, sentimentalism’s dual ability to promote these ideals and extend identification across them makes it an attractive and effective mode for political and social influence. -

2020-2021 Granville High School Summer Reading List Reading over the summer months is critical for students to maintain literary skill. Research shows that students who do not read over the summer demonstrate losses in reading achievement from the end of one school year to the beginning of the next. Therefore, we believe that summer reading is an essential component of the Granville High School curriculum. Students entering grades 9-12 are required to complete their summer reading selections by the first day of the school year. Assessments will vary based on the level of the course, and the GHS Website contains assignments that are intended for completion in conjunction with the reading. Book summaries are provided below courtesy of Barnes and Noble in order to assist in making selections. Works indicated with a (*) symbol are recommended for students enrolled in the Global Scholars Program. An American Outsider
Nelson Algren: An American Outsider Bettina Drew VER THE MANY YEARS IHAVE SPENT WRITING AND THINKING ABOUT Nelson Algren, I have always found, in addition to his poetic lyri- clsm, a density and darkness and preoccupation with philosoph- .nl issues that seem fundamentally European rather than Amer- ican. In many ways, Norman Mailer was right when he called Algren "the grand odd-ball of American Ietters."' There is some- thing accurate in the description, however pejorative its intent or meaning at first glance, for Algren held consistently and without doubt to an artistic vision that, above and beyond its naturalism, was at odds with the mainstream of American literature. And cul- ural reasons led to the lukewarm American reception of his work ill the past several decades. As James R. Giles notes in his book Confronting the Horror: The Novels of Nelson Algren, a school of critical thought citing Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Mark Twain, and Walt Whitman argues that nineteenth-century American liter- ature was dominated by an innocence and an intense faith in in- dividual freedom and human potential. But nineteenth-century American literature was also dominated by an intense focus on the American experience as unique in the world, a legacy, perhaps, of --. the American Revolution against monarchy in favor of democ- racy. Slave narratives, Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852),narratives of westward discovery such as Twain's Roughing It (1872), the wilderness tales of James Fenimore Cooper, and Thoreau's stay on Walden Pond were stories that could have taken place only in America-an essentially rural and industrially unde- veloped America. -

Social Bonds, Sexual Politics, and Political Community on the U.S. Left, 1920s-1940s' Kathleen A. Brown and Elizabeth Faue William Armistead Nelson Collier, a sometime anarchist and poet, self- professed free lover and political revolutionary, inhabited a world on the "lunatic fringe" of the American Left. Between the years 1908 and 1948, he traversed the legitimate and illegitimate boundaries of American radicalism. After escaping commitment to an asylum, Collier lived in several cooperative colonies - Upton Sinclair's Helicon Hall, the Single Tax Colony in Fairhope, Alabama, and April Farm in Pennsylvania. He married (three times legally) andor had sexual relationships with a number of radical women, and traveled the United States and Europe as the Johnny Appleseed of Non-Monogamy. After years of dabbling in anarchism and communism, Collier came to understand himself as a radical individualist. He sought social justice for the proletariat more in the realm of spiritual and sexual life than in material struggle.* Bearded, crude, abrupt and fractious, Collier was hardly the model of twentieth century American radicalism. His lover, Francoise Delisle, later wrote of him, "The most smarting discovery .. was that he was only a dilettante, who remained on the outskirts of the left wing movement, an idler and loafer, flirting with it, in search of amorous affairs, and contributing nothing of value, not even a hard day's work."3 Most historians of the 20th century Left would share Delisle's disdain. Seeking to change society by changing the intimate relations on which it was built, Collier was a compatriot, they would argue, not of William Z. -

Although the study focused on Herbst's reporting from Cuba and Germany, other writings were examined, including several fictional pieces, memoirs, and literary criticism. Herbst's work was analyzed according to several criteria. Each piece was reviewed for its stylistic characteristics--language usage, narrative form, source use and balance, and readability. Background material on the thirties provides context not only for Herbst's politics, experiences, and social views, but also for her writing -style and genre choices. Analysis revealed that Herbst's choice of topics was motivated by her Marxist politics. Analysis also showed that Herbst's writing has been overlooked in j,..urnalism history, and although her sex and politics may be enough to generate renewed interest in her, the justification for consideration of her work rests on its ability to capture a sense of time and people otherwise lost in "missing moments" of history.
