a Journey of Giving Hearts About the The Chinese Community Center (CCC), a United Way Agency, was founded in 1979 as a Chinese language and cultural heritage school to provide education and support to immigrants who had recently arrived in the . Since then, CCC has expanded its programming to offer comprehensive, wraparound services that address the needs of Greater Houston residents from any racial or ethnic group and at any stage of life—from early childhood to retirement age.

As we continue to look forward, CCC is committed to serve the lives of more than 20,000 Greater Houstonians annually through its mission of bridging East and West by enriching families with educational, cultural, and social service programs.

EDUCATION The Early Learning Center helps young children achieve age-appropriate developmental milestones and become independent learners and thinkers as they prepare to enter kindergarten. The program is part of United Way’s Bright Beginnings initiative and is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

The Youth program, part of United Way’s Education Collaborative, assists at-risk, minority, and immigrant students in their academic and interpersonal development. The program offers after-school activities and a summer camp that place an emphasis on providing quality academic support and character building.

SOCIAL SERVICES CCC is a member of United Way THRIVE, a designated LISC Financial Opportunity Center, and an approved Housing Counseling Agency by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Our services include financial education, employment training, career and financial coaching, benefits enrollment assistance, citizenship assistance, and first-time homebuyer education.

HEALTH & WELLNESS This program helps older adults maintain their well-being and connection to the community through such services as our membership-based Wellness Program, Caregiver Support and Education, and Wan Yuan Senior Companionship.

CULTURE & COMMUNITY The Language School offers Chinese classes for children and adults, as well as leisure learning courses, such as piano, calligraphy, and arts and crafts.

Asian Heritage Tours showcase the best cultural, shopping, and dining hot spots in southwest Houston through bus tours, walking tours, culinary evenings, and Chinese cultural performances.

The Lunar New Year Festival is an annual, family-friendly event that brings the community together to celebrate the most important holiday in Chinese culture. 關於中華文化服務中心

The New Horizons Expansion Project was completed in August 2019 and included:

• Construction of a new 20,000 square-foot, two-story facility on CCC’s existing campus. The building and its immediate surroundings consist of:

• a Day Activity & Health Services (DAHS) program for older adults (this program is currently in development)

• an auditorium and multipurpose conference and activity suites for public use. These areas are available as a community resource to host events, conferences, and workshops.

• a commercial kitchen and banquet hall for older adults. This space is available to the public for private events as well.

• a courtyard garden to promote health and wellness for all clients. This space is used for outdoor events.

• Conversion of an existing storage building into a recreational center for health and wellness activities. This space may also serve as an emergency shelter during times of crisis for the city.

• Relocation of the Early Learning Center and Youth Playgrounds to place them adjacent to the existing building and improve student safety.

• Modification to parking lot layout to increase parking capacity, as well as improve overall pedestrian safety and traffic flow.

With our expanded facilities, CCC is able to host several new programs:

This 40th Year Journey of Giving Hearts concert features talented young musicians from the North America Youth Chinese Orchestra. NAYCO is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2012 by Changlu Wu. Its goal is to promote and enhance the cultural diversity and richness of American society through the dissemination of traditional Chinese music, training of young musicians, performing for and serving the communities. 1989 CCC acquired its first home at 11596 Beechnut and implements job training program for newcomer families.

1979 Chinese Community Center founded by Dr. Yhi-Min Ho, Mr. Joseph Lee, and Mr. Char-An Chao.

1996 Child Care facility opens through assistance of a $400,000 grant from the Housing and Community Development Department of the City of Houston.

Mayor Sylvester Turner, formerly State 1992 Representative at time of event, joins CCC’s Board Retreat as key speaker. CCC moves to its 5855 Sovereign location.

1994 CCC receives a grant from National Asian Pacific Center on Aging (NAPCA) 1997 to administer Senior Community Youth Program begins as it receives Service Employment Program (SCSEP) funding from City of Houston’s in Harris County, Texas. 2003 CCC initiates Capacity Building Campaign to add a gymnasium, stage, and additional programming space.

2005 CCC moves to a current home at 9800 Town Park Drive, a 57,000-square-foot facility in the heart of southwest Houston.
