Chinese American Citizens Alliance Installs New Chapter Lodge in Chicago The Chinese American Citizens Alliance, founded in 1895 and headquartered in San Francisco, chartered its newest chapter in Chicago, Illinois on Sunday, March 14 at the Chinese Community Center. The daylong festive ceremonies opened in the heart of Chicago‘s Chinatown with the traditional Lion Dance by a local performing group complete with firecrackers. The Grand Lodge contingent of Grand President Carolyn H. Chan, Executive Vice-President Virginia C. Gee, Membership VP John W ong, Communications VP Ed Gor, Grand Treasurer Herb Gee, Auditor Randy Young, Grand Executives David Lee and W illiam Mei, W ashington DC Lodge President Thomas Lee and DC member Rocky Lee joined the Charter Chicago Lodge Officers and members and hundreds of local dignitaries and community leaders in the commemoration unveiling of the Chicago Lodge signage to mark its headquarters at the On Leong Building. Chicago Lodge Charter ceremonies and installation of the 51 newest members and 3 associate members moved to the Chinese Community Center where a standing room only crowd close to 300 included U.S. Congressman Danny Davis (IL) and dignitaries representing every major Chinese community and family organization in the greater Chicago area. Grand President Chan opened with historical reminders of the Alliance‘s objectives and missions and remarked, —The Alliance continues to heighten its visibility at the national level by speaking out on relevant issues such as health care reform, immigration reform, racial bullying in schools, hate crimes, racial stereotyping, and participation in Census 2010 to ensure an accurate census count. We encourage participation in the political process as appointees or elected officials at local, state, or Federal levels.“ As a lead-in to the member installation and swearing in of Chicago‘s Charter Board of Officers, GP Chan exhorted, —We need your support and participation to be even more effective. You, as leading citizens in the great City of Chicago, are very active and provide valuable services to your community. As spring beckons for a fresh start and we charter a new Chicago Lodge, we urge you to grow your membership to help meet the challenges of today and the future.“ Assisting GP Chan in the ceremonies were Membership VP Wong, VP Gor and GE William Mei as President Herman W ong, Vice-President Ivy P. Lam, Secretary John Moy and Treasurer Raymond Lee took their oaths of office. Other Board of Officers installed were: Assistant Secretary George J. Eng, Financial Secretary W ayne J. Moy, Auditors Philip K. Chow and Betty W ong, Marshal Mike Chu, Sentinel Peter Chan, Collector Grace Lee and Grand Representative Kin S. Ng. Page 1 of 5 Chan presented Chicago President Herman Wong with its first Alliance gavel. President Wong accepted congratulations, greetings and well wishes and red envelope —lay- see“ from local groups, individuals and Alliance chapter lodges across the country. In his remarks, Wong expressed gratitude to those who helped with the reformation of this Lodge and acknowledged the deep historical roots of activism and involvement of the original Chicago lodge in the early 1900‘s. He acknowledged and accepted the challenges of the landscape of civil rights, Voter education, political involvement and empowerment of Asian Americans and access to social services and affordable health care in Chicago‘s Asian communities. The day-long festivities fittingly concluded with the Chicago Lodge hosting dinner at the China Buffet to honor the new Chicago board, thank Grand Lodge attendees and thank the volunteers who helped to organize the installation ceremonies. It focuses on the landscape changes and spatial struggles in the Chinatowns under the forces of urban redevelopment after WWII. As the world has entered into a global era in the second half of the twentieth century, the conditions of Chinatown have significantly changed due to the explosion of information and the blurring of racial and cultural boundaries. One major change has been the new agenda of urban land planning which increasingly prioritizes the rationality of capital accumulation. The different stages of urban redevelopment have in common the deliberate efforts to manipulate the land uses and spatial representations of Chinatown as part of the socio-cultural strategies of urban development. A central thread linking the dissertation’s chapters is the attempt to examine the contingent and often contradictory production and reproduction of socio-spatial forms in Chinatowns when the world is increasingly structured around the dynamics of economic and technological changes with the new forms of global and local activities. Late capitalism has dramatically altered city forms such that a new understanding of the role of ethnicity and race in the making of urban space is required.

From interviews and conversations with these women and men, he discusses the sacrifices those men and women made, the bodily harm and suffering in the war to end all wars, their remarkable diligence in building families and businesses, the cour- age they displayed in rehabilitating their physical and emotional war wounds, and the integrity of character and commitment to values that in- fused their lives. As they continued to stare down life’s challenges, they never griped or complained even as their lives were mixed with courage and perseverance, tragedy and sadness, and triumphs and miracles. Entering our 121st year of service, Chinese American Citizens Alliance continues to look ahead at how we see our role in this country by looking back at our history as an organization challenged to address society’s treatment and place for Chinese in the 1890’s. Our Archive Project to gather, categorize, and turn over our recorded history to the Stanford University Libraries remains a major undertaking. Just look for the stories of the Chinese who worked on the Transcontinental Railroad. You won’t find many names or photographs, but you can find their stories written on walls or artwork. We believe that within our own records, there may be documentation linking many C.A.C.A.

Hastings, PhD, MSW University at Albany, State University of New York, Albany, New York, United States https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2262-2279 Contact: [email protected] Abstract Asian American family caregivers have gained increased attention due to the need to provide life-sustaining aid at home given the rising numbers of older adults. This article reflects upon caregiving-related research studies that have overlooked the circumstances Asian American caregivers bring to the home-care context. Policies written to address community needs tend to omit the social circumstances many Asian American caregivers must face when trying to take advantage of programs and services. For example, the eligibility requirements fail to recognize distinctive cultural values embedded within the caregiving processes. Further, most Asian American data is aggregated. Aggregating data by ethnicity limits an accurate portrayal of social circumstances. The health effects developed from caregiving demands tend to remain unaddressed and the distribution of goods and essential services generally does not reach many home-based Asian American caregivers in need. This text examines a within-group perspective to uncover sociocultural dimensions influencing caregiving.     Asian Americans Salute Frontline Heroes Dear friends, Asian Americans Salute Frontline Heroes (AASFH) has successfully concluded its campaign. Your generous donation which serves as the cornerstone of our campaign allows us to accomplish all our objectives in a very short 7-week period. Every committee member has worked tirelessly to make this possible. Below is a brief summary of what we have accomplished for each of our three objectives: 1. Honoring our frontline heroes who are putting their lives at risk for our benefit. We have delivered 10,000 meals to frontline heroes (doctors, nurses, policemen, firefighters, sanitary workers, health department employees…) at more than 50 separate locations. 2. Helping Asian restaurants that are struggling due to this pandemic. We have paid more than $100,000 for the above 10,000 meals to more than 30 Asian restaurants. 3. Counteracting the growing anti-Asian sentiment and highlighting contributions of Asian Americans during this pandemic. We have published two full-page and two half-page ads (see attached) in Houston Chronicle to highlight the contribution of Asian Americans to this pandemic (more than 3 million dollars in total donation) and to address the issue of growing anti-Asian sentiment due to the pandemic. We have held a press conference with Mayor Turner highlighting the above issues. We had great coverage of our effort by Houston Chronicle which also highlighted the Asian American contributions. We have held an award ceremony honoring the two heroes who intervened when an Asian American family in Midland, Texas was attacked with a knife due to the growing anti-Asian sentiment.
