The New Grove Dictionary (1980) Links acknowledges the importance of investigating these changes when it states that a "good performance [on a period instrument] provides a quite different aural experience from one played on modern instruments".1 A greater understanding of shifting performance styles informs an historical awareness, provides insight into the intentions of the music and 'breathes life into' a modern rendition. INSTRUMENTAL MECHANISM As we know most pre-1900 performers used hybrids of Müller's 13-key instrument. Müller highlighted his performance ideals (and those of the period) in the notes of his celebrated tutor of 1820: "...the player should practise using violin music, should treat the clarinet like other instruments, and should practise to become fluent in all tonalities".2 Indeed, Müller included an exercise in C flat major in his 1820 tutor such was his desire that the player be proficient in all tonalities. It is reasonable to assume that despite instrumental limitations, professional players like Müller worked conscientiously to achieve technical security.3

K. 421 is the second work in a set of six quartets dedicated to Mozart’s colleague and mentor, Joseph Haydn, and is the only ‘Haydn’ Quartet in a minor key. An overview of the historical background of K. 421, the significance of D minor in Mozart’s compositions, as well as the compositional relationship between Mozart and Haydn situates this work amongst Mozart’s other string quartet compositions and provides context for the analysis of different editions. An outline of the historical practices and roles of editors, as well as a detailed analysis and comparison of different editions against the autograph manuscript and the first edition published by Artaria in 1785 examines the numerous discrepancies between each of the different publications of K. 421. Using the information acquired from the comparative study of selected historical editions, some possibilities for future editions of K. 421 are discussed. When undertaking the study of a new quartet, performers can learn a great deal from listening to recordings.

    Convegno e Concerti a Pesaro Il Conservatorio “G. Rossini” di Pesaro ha dedicato tre giorni (24-26 marzo 2012) a rievocare la figura e l’opera di Antonio Cicognani, suo esemplare docente dal 1897 al 1932, con il Convegno dal titolo La “scuola” pesarese di Antonio Cicognani al Conservatorio “G. Rossini” e tre concerti tenuti dagli allievi dell’Istituto. Il 24, presso la Sala “Adele Bei” della Provincia, sono state proposte musiche per harmonium e voci. Il brano Dilexisti justitiam di Giovanni Tebaldini è stato eseguito da Elena Gentiletti (harmonium), Giorgi Turabelidze (basso), Alejandro Benavides Urena (tenore). Il 25 in Duomo è stata eseguita la Missa Hypomisolidia per organo e coro del Cicognani. Per il concerto del 26, presso la Sala Pedrotti del Conservatorio, sono state prescelte solo musiche per organo. La docente Giovanna Franzoni ha interpretato Comunione di Tebaldini.
