  • Cavan Walking Guide
CAVAN WALKS GUIDE Welcome to the Cavan County Walks Guide County Cavan is a walker’s paradise, with a wide variety of walks for all fitness levels and abilities. There are rambling country lanes, winding forest tracks, breathtaking mountain roads, and tranquil lake shore paths, all within easy reach. The walks are suitable for most people who are relatively fit and should be within the capabilities of most. However, all walks have been graded according to their level of difficulty and an explanation of this is given below. Easy: Generally flat trails with some gentle slopes. They can be described as ‘muscle looseners’ and can be walked in runners or other similar light footwear. Moderate: These trails can be described as ‘muscle stretchers’. The going underfoot can be poor or rough with some obstacles such as protruding roots or loose stones. Boots or strong walking shoes are generally required. Strenuous: These are physically demanding trails and can be described as ‘muscle builders’. They may have moderately steep climbs for long sections. The going underfoot can be extremely rough and can include many obstacles. All walks are waymarked and have information and map panels to assist with navigation. 1 CAVAN WALKS GUIDE The Countryside Code When walking in the countryside, always remember that you may be walking through someone’s workplace. Careless behaviour such as leaving farm gates open, can cause great problems for farmers. Litter of any description can cause serious damage to livestock and wildlife alike. A little thought and common sense can ensure a good relationship between the farmer, the local community and the visitor.

  • Submission by Cavan County Council Regional Spatial and Economic Strategy Draft Consultation Northern and Western Region
Submission by Cavan County Council Regional Spatial and Economic Strategy Draft Consultation Northern and Western Region February 2019 Tommy Ryan Brendan Jennings Chief Executive Director Of Planning _______________ ________________ 1 Introduction Cavan County Council welcomes the publication of the draft Regional Spatial and Economic Strategy and the opportunity to make a submission. Having considered the consultation documents, Cavan County Council has identified further revisions to be considered for inclusion in the Regional Spatial and Economic Strategy. See Appendix 1 for recommended Case Studies to be included in the Regional Spatial and Economic Strategy, in addition to the Marble Arch Caves. Strong Urban and Rural Places (page 26) Population Allocation: Part 1 of Socio Economic Baseline Report (page 9, fig 11) outlines population per county from 1996 to 2016 as per the census. This provides the region with evidence of population trends in recent years and indicates how counties vary in terms of growth and decline of populations. For example County Cavan saw a 13% growth in this period, ahead of Mayo at 11%, Roscommon at 7%, Monaghan at 5%, Sligo at 5% and Leitrim at 5%. Circular Letter FPS 04/2018 Implementation Roadmap for the National Planning Framework projects all counties growth in the Region at 15%. This scenario is highly unlikely to materialise. Some counties will exceed this growth whilst some counties are likely to fall well short. Population projections by county (pg 26) should be more reflective of likely growth scenarios. The region will not reach its population projections set out in the National Planning Framework, and thus fall further behind other regions, if the counties that are likely to grow at a rate beyond the county target are curtailed.

PREFACE. 1 HAVE condensed into this little volume a consi- derable part of the local etymologies contained in " The Origin and History of Irish Names of Places." 1 have generally selected those names that are best known through the country, and I have thought it better to arrange them in alpha- betical order. The book has been written in the hope that it may prove useful, and perhaps not uninteresting, to those who are anxious for information on the subject, but who have not the opportunity of perusing the larger volume. Soon after the appearance of "The Origin and History of Irish Names of Places," I received from correspondents in various parts of Ireland communications more or less valuable on the topo- graphy, legends, or antiquities of their respective localities. I take this opportunity of soliciting further information from those who are able to give it, and who are anxious to assist in the advancement of Irish literature. IRISH LOCAL NAMES EXPLATKED. THE PROCESS OF ANGLICISING. 1. Systematic Changes. Irish prommciation preserved. —In anglicising Irish names, the leading general rule is, that the present forms are derived from the ancient Irish, as they were spoken, not as they were written. Those who first committed them to writing, aimed at preserving the original pronunciation, by representing it as nearly as they were able in English letters.
