Bootsie Cartoon By Oliver W. Harrington, Northwest Defender, 10-15-1964 This particular “Bootsie” cartoon appeared in the Northwest Defender, a Portland-based African American weekly, in October of 1964, a year after a church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama, had killed four young African American girls. Ollie Harrington was living in Soviet-controlled East Berlin when he created and published this cartoon. As the caption makes clear, race-based violence in the United States provided communist countries with an easy target for their anti-American propaganda. Foreign policy experts and advisors of the U.S. government were well aware of the international consequences of domestic race-based violence, intimidation, and discrimination. In World War II, the U.S. Department of War Information was particularly concerned about “the degree to which Nazi propaganda, and even more Japanese propaganda, was having its effect on the attitude of the Negroes toward the war.” The U.S. State Department had also learned, by the mid-1960s, that the nation’s political interests in Latin America and Southeast Asia were threatened by violence, discrimination, and xenophobia expressed by American whites toward the nation’s non-white minorities. During the Cold War, the Soviets used racial discontent in the U.S. to discredit American efforts to “democratize” the world. The high stakes of the Cold War induced foreign policy experts such as Secretary of State John Foster Dulles to openly denounce racial discrimination as “morally wrong” and “stupid,” warning that “[i]f we choose to be exclusive on racial or religious lines, we will find ourselves to be a perilously small minority in a hostile world.” The international consequences of institutional racism in the United States became an important motivation behind governmental efforts to reform racist laws and business practices domestically. -

Pendas This dissertation examines the relationship between Black America and East Germany from 1949 to 1989, exploring the ways in which two unlikely partners used international solidarity to achieve goals of domestic importance. Despite the growing number of works addressing the black experience in and with Imperial Germany, Nazi Germany, West Germany, and contemporary Germany, few studies have devoted attention to the black experience in and with East Germany. In this work, the outline of this transatlantic relationship is defined, detailing who was involved in the friendship, why they were involved, and what they hoped to gain from this alliance. -

But what is striking about Richard Wright's life is that the opposite seems to have happened. His life was as bizarre, colorful, and inter- esting as fiction, and yet, during his life and since, others constantly made the man and his life into a statement. -

LOST LOOSE AND LOVED FOREIGN ARTISTS IN PARIS 1944-1968 The exhibition Lost, Loose, and Loved: Foreign Artists in Paris, 1944–1968 concludes the year 2018 at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía with a broad investigation of the varied Parisian art scene in the decades after World War II. The exhibition focuses on the complex situation in France, which was striving to recuperate its cultural hegemony and recompose its national identity and influence in the newly emerging postwar geopolitical order of competing blocs. It also places a particular focus on the work of foreign artists who were drawn to the city and contributed to creating a stimulating, productive climate in which intense discussion and multiple proposals prevailed. Cultural production in a diverse, continuously transforming postwar Paris has often been crowded out by the New York art world, owing both to a skillful exercise of American propaganda that had spellbound much of the criticism, market, and institutions, as well as later to the work of canonical art history with its celebration of great names and specific moments. Dismissed as secondary, minor, or derivative, art practices in those years, such as those of the German artist Wols, the Dutch artist Bram van Velde, or the Portuguese artist Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, to name just a few, lacked the single cohesive image that the New York School offered with Abstract Impressionism and its standard bearer, Jackson Pollock. Copyrighted Material InTroducTIon irredeemable Promise: the Bittersweet Career of J. saunders redding n the downward slope of a thirty-year publishing career, the fifty-two- oyear-old writer, professor, and literary critic J. Saunders Redding (1906– 1988) brimmed with a final project. He wanted to work with the best fiction editors around to publish his second and as yet unwritten novel, a book that would redeem his career and confirm as worthwhile his efforts as a writer and teacher of literature. That early winter of 1959 Redding was going into his fif- teenth year of teaching English at a small college in coastal Virginia and won- dering about posterity’s opinion of him. A lean man with a confident air, who dressed in the Ivy League style, Red- ding was from an elite Delaware family and a devotee of the Protestant work ethic. Daily he labored over his books and articles in an upstairs room that his wife and sons were forbidden to enter during specific hours—the edict counter- manded rarely, such as when Franklin Roosevelt died. In this upper room Red- ding had stacks of books, an unframed picture of his father, yellow pads and pencils, and cigarette smoke curling up the walls. It had been a place of produc- tivity, but even his proven sanctuary rebuffed him as the year 1959 unwound. The fretting that Redding showed that year was what he had displayed his whole writing life, and it was curious because he had already experienced un- equivocal success as a writer. He had published long essays in Harper’s Maga- zine and Atlantic Monthly.
