Publicado por: Abdul Nasser Thabet Tras un 2010 de ensueño, el tenista español Rafael Nadal comienza este nuevo año con un estado gripal y un sentido tropezón frente al ruso Nikolay Davydenko –campeón defensor- (6-3, 6-2) en la segunda semifinal del torneo de Doha, Qatar. Nadal tuvo que luchar contra dos adversarios, pues desde los octavos de final arrastraba una gripe que le había demandado más que sus contrincantes. Aunque para nada debemos demeritar el accionar del ruso, quien mostró un excelente desempeño. ¿Habrá encontrado Nadal la horma de su zapato? Davydenko es uno de los pocos tenistas que puede presumir frente al mallorquín, pues presenta un favorable balance de victorias y derrotas (6-4), tras este encuentro. La primera manga, muy equilibrada, se resolvió en el octavo juego, cuando Davydenko rompió el saque del ibérico. De esta forma se colocó delante (5-3) sin mostrar compasión alguna, para apuntarse así el primer set. El inicio del segundo parcial presagiaba un final de lágrimas para los seguidores del niño mimado del tenis. Tras un claro (2-0) favorable al ucraniano con nacionalidad rusa, Nadal recibió la visita de los médicos y tras unos minutos de conversación decidió plantar cara a pesar de la dolencia. El ruso se alió de muy buena gana con el virus y no dio concesión alguna al número uno del mundo, para consolidar su condición de victimario frente al español en superficies duras. El de Europa del Este desbarató los pronósticos de varios especialistas –incluyendo el mío-, pues sí bien venía de ganarle al ibérico hace un año en la final de la misma competición, había salido al campo pocas veces en 2010 por problemas físicos que le hicieron caer del top 20. En el otro partido de este viernes el astro suizo Roger Federer destrozó la raqueta del francés Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (6-3, 7-6(2)), para de esta forma vérselas en la gran final frente al verdugo del actual número uno del mundo. Ahora el gran duelo estará a mano de la estrella de Basilea y el «coco» del Rafa, pues el helvético buscará vengar su descalabro frente al ruso en el mismo escenario el pasado año. El Khalifa Tennis Complex alojará entonces una lucha a muerte, de la que saldrá el primer ganador de torneos de la ATP en este 2011.     GAME, SET, WATCHED: GOVERNANCE, SOCIAL CONTROL AND SURVEILLANCE IN PROFESSIONAL TENNIS By Marie-Pier Guay A thesis submitted to the Department of Sociology in conformity with the requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada November, 2013 Copyright © Marie-Pier Guay, 2013 Abstract Contrary to many major sporting leagues such as the NHL, NFL, NBA, and MLB, or the Olympic Games as a whole, the professional tennis industry has not been individually scrutinized in terms of governance, social control, and surveillance practices. This thesis presents an in-depth account of the major governing bodies of the professional tennis circuit with the aim of examining how they govern, control, constrain, and practice surveillance on tennis athletes and their bodies. Foucault’s major theoretical concepts of disciplinary power, governmentality, and bio-power are found relevant today and can be enhanced by Rose’s ethico-politics model and Haggerty and Ericson’s surveillant assemblage. However, it is also shown how Foucault, Rose, and Haggerty and Ericson’s different accounts of “modes of governing” perpetuate sociological predicaments of professional tennis players within late capitalism. These modes of surveillance are founded on a meritocracy based on the ATP and WTA rankings systems. A player’s ranking affects how he or she is governed, surveilled, controlled, and even punished. Despite ostensibly promoting tennis athletes’ health protection and wellbeing, the systems of surveillance, governance, and control rely on a biased and capitalistically-driven meritocracy that actually jeopardizes athletes’ health and contributes to social class divisions, socio- economic inequalities, gender discrimination, and media pressure.
